CW: Dover situation, further considerings
I think the police's - and ultimately the government's - passive inaction at Dover today is unwise.
This is allowing power to gather and coalesce rather than grasping the nettle and nipping it in the bud. The earlier you disperse blokes who are explicitly or implicitly threatening violence, the less chance they have to hype each other up and actually do some. Letting them continue now is asking for trouble later.
This is allowing a rival hierarchy to gain power and start thinking they can make the rules, which is not a good plan if you want to maintain an orderly state.
And okay there are problems with that too, I'm not unaware of the down sides of "state monopoly of violence" etc, but I would rather have a weak Labour government in charge than a fascist force unofficially taking over. Come on Burnham, act like you know the stakes.
(BTW the threat of violence is the difference between this lot and the Just Stop Oil / Palestine-solidarity type people, who by and large are not threatening to harm any humans at all - rather the contrary.)
