  1. Jews were legally considered a separate race in the US through WW2. The 1987 S.C. decision in Shaare Tefila Congregation v. Cobb is based on it.

All of my people's migration documents list their race as Hebrew. This isn't moving forward. I'm not saying it's good or bad. It's just not new.

"The state of #California is poised to become the first in the nation to recognize being #Jewish as an #ethnic and #racial, not just a #religious, identity.

On Aug. 13, a key committee of its state #Senate passed a bill that would add “Jewish” to its long list of recognized identities. This is an important step forward in a longstanding debate about whether that label denotes just a religion or is an #ethnicity or #race. As The #NewYorkTimes observes, it is “a first step toward acknowledging and demystifying the multifaceted nature of Jewish identity.”

But it comes at a dangerous moment for #American #Jews, a moment of rising #antisemitism and anti-Jewish #hatecrimes."

  2. @2legged Rabbi David Yosef is #evil incarnate. He is a truly vile excrescence on the #human race, & should be utterly condemned by all decent #people. It is absolutely essential, for the sake of #Judaism, that all other #Jewish #religious #leaders denounce him. If they fail to do so, their condemn their own #religion.

  3. #religious : relating to or believing in a religion

  4. “If there is one thing all #religious liberty scholars & advocates…have agreed on, it is that the #FreeExerciseClause forbids #government #discrimination because of #religion,” Steven T. Collis, a UT-Austin #law professor, said….“Although Gov. Abbott’s letter characterized what the airports were providing as discriminating in favor of #Muslims, this newest saga is actually part of a much broader pattern of state officials targeting Muslims & trying to make #Texas an inhospitable place for them.”

  5. Asked if the decision was a response to #GregAbbott’s letter, Montgomery said it was made before the letter was issued, but that airport ofcls “were aware of his & other public officials’ emerging concerns.”

#Muslim leaders & experts in #religious liberties rejected Abbott’s claim that the facilities would discriminate against non-Muslims. Several said opposition to the washing stations is the latest example of #GOP leaders, perhaps most visibly in #Texas, railing against Islam.

  7. The justices are expected to decide in coming months whether to take up the case, which is being closely watched as conservatives…work to expand #religious “rights” [ #Christian #evangelism ] in public spaces & opponents battle them in court. In April, a conservative appeals court upheld the law in a narrowly divided opinion.

  9. Radical #settlers have established hundreds of additional outposts without government authorization, while still enjoying protection from the Israeli military & often other public services.

#Netanyahu’s government, the most #nationalist & #religious in #Israel’s history, has boasted of establishing over 100 new #settlements. On Thurs, as the army deployed in Qusra, members of his Cabinet celebrated the rebuilding of a settlement that had been dismantled in 2005 as part of the #Gaza withdrawal.

  10. [cue old Der Stürmer joke for poignancy here]

Why we put this nonsense out into the ether ourselves is beyond me.

"There’s a different question being asked, largely in #Democratic circles, of today’s #Jewish #presidential# candidates: “Is he the ‘right’ kind of Jewish #candidate to be #president?” — a question that is almost entirely centered around a candidate’s position on #Israel and how openly he identifies with his #religious #faith.

A long list of Jewish candidates are considering a presidential campaign or are being touted as credible contenders, ranging from moderates like #Pennsylvania #Gov. #JoshShapiro, #Sen. #ElissaSlotkin (D- #MI) and former #Chicago #Mayor #RahmEmanuel to #progressives like #Illinois Gov. #JBPritzker and those who straddle the ideological divide, like Sen. #JonOssoff (D- #GA)."

  12. Thinking about all the people who grew up #religious but never had their parents behind them so a parental god looks like oppression while a safe family conveys an image of a loving, present God that people can rest their conviction on with certainty.

A certainty they practiced through trust in their parents, they couldn't fathom the uncaring cruelty of the god presented in a home without parental support and love. 1/2

  13. There's actually a very active frum fitness scene.

"It may be one of the most overlooked #religious obligations of our time.

    Not #prayer. Not #charity. Not even #Torahstudy. But #exercise.

That may sound odd, because #Judaism is not a culture of physical vanity. We do not worship the body, glorify muscle, or measure human worth by outward appearance. The #Torah’s ideal is not the #athlete in the stadium, but the #Jew who lives with #faith, discipline, humility, and a sense of higher purpose.

And yet, somewhere along the way, many of us seem to have confused rejecting vanity with neglecting #health.

When it comes to sleep, diet, movement, and basic physical care, too many people treat the body as if it were religiously irrelevant."

    #Jewish tradition says otherwise."

  14. "In May 1818, #MordecaiManuelNoah, a prominent #Jew of his time and a member of the #Madison administration, delivered a discourse on #Jewish #history on the occasion of a #synagogue consecration. One man read #Noah’s words with interest, and took pen to paper to say so.

“Your sect by its sufferings has furnished a remarkable proof of the universal spirit of #religious #intolerance,” the correspondent noted, in elegant cursive. “Our laws have applied the only antidote to this vice, protecting our religious, as they do our civil, rights by putting them all on equal footing. But more remains to be done, for although we are free by the law, we are not so in practice.”

The letter’s author was #ThomasJefferson. 200 years later, there’s still work to do.

The Jefferson letter is one of 75 objects on view at All We Have Standing Between Us: 250 Years of Jews and #American #Democracy, the American Jewish #Historical Society’s new exhibit at the Center for #JewishHistory."

  15. #Epstein’s approach is resolutely interdisciplinary. He draws on #Jewish studies, #arthistory, #theology, #codicology, and #culturalhistory, as well as analogies from #popularculture. This style extends to the #prose, which blends close #visualanalysis with personal anecdotes, digressions, and moments of #memoir. For some #readers, this intimacy will enhance accessibility, collapsing the gap between #scholar and subject; others may find it distracts from sustained theoretical engagement. The balance between #narrative digression and focused argument is not always even, and the density of #illustration placement can interrupt textual flow. Yet the over-all effect is of a generous teacher guiding readers through a complex #visual and #cultural landscape. People of the Image speaks not only to #scholars of #Jewish #art, but to broader debates in #medieval art history, #religious studies, and visual culture.” ~ review by Sara Offenberg..."

  16. Not typically a fan of Rabbi Ruttenberg, but this is an interesting, provocative thought-piece.

"Nobody would think twice about demanding a #reasonableaccommodation if #corporations asked #Jews to start violating #Shabbat or partaking of the #pork BBQ at the #company retreat against their own practice. And while I would not demand that every #Jew request such an #accommodation (for Shabbat or keeping #kosher), they should absolutely have that option available, even if their #religious practice is a work in progress. So too, here.

And despite seeing many people (including religious Jews!) eliding the moral and religious issues around #AI because "that train has already left the station," we should make choices based on whether they are right or wrong. Also, it's a fallacy: Movements grow from dissent."

  17. "The #Hamas murderous attacks of #October7, 2023, and the #war that followed transformed the landscape of #antisemitism across #Europe. What began as outrage over a conflict in the #MiddleEast quickly spilled onto #European streets, #campuses, workplaces and #online platforms. Too often, the distinction between criticisms the policies of the #Israeli government and #Jewish citizens living in Europe simply disappeared.

This is perhaps the most significant change of all. Increasingly, #Jews in #Paris, #Berlin, #Brussels or #London are treated not primarily as #French, #German, #Belgian or #British citizens, but as representatives of Israel, expected to answer for events thousands of kilometers away. #Collectiveresponsibility, one of history's oldest prejudices, has returned in modern form.

Jews are singled out in a way no other #religious, #ethnic or national community in Europe is that is connected to one of the dozens of conflicts currently raging across the globe."

  18. Today's AP/NORC Jew survey slow rollout is finally interesting data.

"About 1 in 10 #Jewish adults say that in the past year, they or someone in their household has been physically #assaulted. A similar share had #propertydamaged or destroyed specifically because of their Jewish background.

About 2 in 10 Jewish adults say they or someone in their household has been called a #slur, #threatened, verbally #harassed or verbally abused. Similarly, about 2 in 10 say they experienced #online #harassment or #cyberbullying. Overall, about 3 in 10 of Jewish adults say that they or someone in their household has experienced at least one of these incidents because of their Jewish background.

    [...]

Slightly less than half of Jewish adults who frequently attend #religious services say they or someone in their household has faced #verbalharassment. A similar share experienced #onlineharassment, and about one-quarter have dealt with #physicalattacks or #propertydamage."

"... When one of the oldest and largest #religious institutions in the world arrives, in 2026, at questions of authority over #data that #Aotearoa’s Te Mana Raraunga articulated as principle in 2018, that is not an accident; it is an insight. That is confirmation that Aotearoa already holds intellectual resources the rest of the world is only now reaching for, and that the failure of many official instruments to draw on them is not simply an equity problem but, in the case of Aotearoa, a squandered advantage. The gap in those instruments is not in the detail of the principles but in the prior question of who the principles answer to..."

I've read the whole essay appreciatively.

  20. "The #NewYorkCity Police Department (NYPD) confirmed on Thursday that #Jews were targeted by more #hatecrimes than any other #racial, #ethnic, or #religious group during the first six months of 2026, deepening concerns among #Jewish leaders that #antisemitism has intensified during the opening months of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration.

The department recorded 178 anti-Jewish hate crimes from January to June, even as hate crimes against Asian, Black, and white #NewYorkers — groups whose populations together outnumber the city’s Jews by nearly six to one — registered double-digit decreases and offenses related to #ethnicity fell 50 percent. Anti-#Muslim offenses also rose, from 14 during the same period in 2025 to 21 this year.

The figures appeared in the NYPD’s biannual #crime report."
