  12. Sometimes vinyl really sucks, often it’s fine enough, and occasionally it’s perfect. I don’t like the uncertainty. And I should also be better at complaining.

CDs may be the perfect format, but I think I love tapes even more. You can’t beat tapes, and if you do, they’ll handle it. But for some reason, metal labels really suck at making tapes. That’s too bad, because some genres just belong to certain formats, and tapes are one of them for metal.

  17. Hmmm... if you used a VGAtoRCA or HDMI2RCA adapter, you could probably store data on VHS tapes as a series of large-ish QR codes with a solid colr flashed between as a trigger to a decoder that the next QRcode is coming in for a scan....

Edit: Actually, the audio channels could be used as extra data or as trigger-codes for the data scanner later...

  35. PSK1000RC2 in #FLdigi with #FLamp seems to store and retrieve data to/from a cassette deck pretty well. So, you can use that to store some data, I suppose. Repeat the transmission multiple times on the tape to ensure you have more chances to bypass damage, degradation, etc of the tape.

  40. I am going to be digitizing a few dozen cassette tapes with spoken word for a client. I still have 2 pieces of hardware that can play them, I just haven't put a tape in any of them for probably 15 years. Should I take any precautions before putting the invaluable tapes in and hitting play? I should probably do a test run with a tape I can afford to be destroyed in case something somewhere got stuck...
