In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government’s power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell.

The #FCC has limited power over issues like this, & its own website states the agency “cannot prevent the broadcast of any particular point of view,” so the notion of “punishment” for #KristenWelker, the moderator of #NBC’s “Meet the Press,” would historically [& legally] be a nonstarter.
But #BrendanCarr has been quick to respond to #Trump’s requests to go after #media organizations. And he has taken aggressive action against some #FCC licensees…

Treating the #FCC like his own personal enforcer, #Trump said on social media Sunday that #NBC’s #KristenWelker would be “reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment” over a TV segment he didn’t like.
In a separate post, Trump complained in all caps about “fake polls” & said “something must be done about it,” adding, “FCC to the rescue!”

While my political views are for the most part completely opposite of the late Senator Barry Goldwater, I do find many quotes attributed to him both insightful and thought provoking. The quote below seems especially thought provoking for today:
