  1. A federal judge refused Friday to block the #Pentagon from firing 3 #StarsAndStripes staff members who claim they were illegally disciplined for speaking out about the #military news outlet’s need to maintain its editorial independence.

Judge Trevor McFadden, who was nominated to the bench by #Trump ruled that the #journalists are unlikely to successfully prove that the Pentagon violated their #FirstAmendment #FreeSpeech rights.

  2. The show of force appeared aimed at not just ferreting out anyone who may have shared information, but intimidating others who might do so in the future, acc/to people with knowledge of the effort.

…The scope of the investigation is without parallel. Mass #polygraph tests have never been administered to the top ranks of the #US #military in modern history.

  3. A quotation from Hugo Black

In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government’s power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell.

Hugo Black (1886–1971) American politician and jurist, US Supreme Court Justice (1937–71)
    New York Times Co. v. United States 403 U.S. 713, 717 (1971) (concurring)

  4. The #FCC has limited power over issues like this, & its own website states the agency “cannot prevent the broadcast of any particular point of view,” so the notion of “punishment” for #KristenWelker, the moderator of #NBC’s “Meet the Press,” would historically [& legally] be a nonstarter.

But #BrendanCarr has been quick to respond to #Trump’s requests to go after #media organizations. And he has taken aggressive action against some #FCC licensees…

  5. Just watched @mariaressa.bsky.social’s powerful speech on how decentralization of information is essential to preserving democracy and the rule of law. 💡

This is a must-watch for anyone who cares about the future of journalism, free speech, and digital rights:
    🎥 Maria Ressa at WJF2025 youtu.be/3cqQn4d79KE

What stood out to me: Centralized platforms are inherently at odds with democratic values. While Bluesky is a step up from Twitter, the real heroes are those already in the #Fediverse—you’re building the future we need! 👏

Maria’s argument that decentralized, open systems are the only way to safeguard truth feels more urgent than ever. If the internet is controlled by a few corporations, how can we trust the information shaping our democracies?

The #Fediverse—of which #Mastodon is a part—is fully free and open-source, as beautifully explained by @_elena in this video:

To those already here: THANK YOU for being part of this movement! 🙌 Now, let’s spread the word—invite others to join the Fediverse. Here are some instances to share:

Remember: Anyone can host their own server—that’s the power of decentralization! It’s resistant to censorship in ways even Bluesky can’t match.

For a deeper dive into how decentralization fights censorship, read Cory Doctorow’s excellent piece:

Maria Ressa’s fight against Duterte’s regime shows change is possible. Her appearance on The Daily Show connects the dots between platform monopolies, misinformation, and democracy’s erosion—and offers hope:

To those already in the Fediverse: You’re the backbone of a free and open internet. What’s one step you’re taking to grow this community? (For me, Using Mastodon nearly dally and it’s sharing technical knowledge with those who need it.)

Let’s keep building a web that’s ours—one that resists tyranny and protects democracy. 💪

  6. #Legal experts have dismissed that suit as baseless & far-fetched [ya don’t say], & #BillOwens said in Feb that he would not apologize as part of any prospective settlement. Many #journalists at #CBSNews — the former home of #WalterCronkite & #MikeWallace — believe that a settlement would amount to a #capitulation to #Trump over what they consider standard-issue gripes about editorial judgment.

  7. @alfredo_liberal I'm having my doubts, that the guy, who Trumpers yelled to have hanged is one of them...

    Nonetheless:

Chris Licht is the Eloon Musk of CNN, obviously.
