  5. 4 days ago The Pentagon fired the editor in chief of Stars and Stripes.

Yesterday they broke the story of Elsie Dominguez, a civilian engineer who was raped repeatedly by the Captain of a Navy ship she was on.

A Judge ruled she needs to file a worker’s comp claim. For rape.

They keep trying to silence the press & quash the truth.

    Elsie’s story must be told:

  6. A quotation from Bertrand Russell

All the governments of the world adopt elaborate methods of concealing truths which they consider undesirable, and inflict various forms of penalty upon those who spread knowledge which is thought bad for the population This applies especially to knowledge of the kind which is considered seditious, and the kind which is considered obscene. I shall not give instances, since, if I did, I should myself fall under the ban of the law.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
Education and the Social Order [Education and the Modern World], ch. 1 “The Individual versus the Citizen” (1932)

  7. #Trump has long been a harsh critic of the #news #media. But in his second term in office, he has moved aggressively to use the immense powers of the federal government in his efforts to attack the #press.

Earlier this year, the #DOJ sought to compel testimony from #journalists at The Wall Street Journal & The Washington Post. The DOJ withdrew the #subpoenas after both news organizations fought back in sealed filings.

  8. #NYT #journalists who received #subpoenas included Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager & Eric Schmitt, who reported on Wednesday that #Trump had departed Turkey on the old #AirForceOne as a #security precaution at the urging of the #SecretService. Thursday, NYT reported that the new Air Force One, a #Qatar donated Boeing 747-8, lacked some of the advanced security features of the older aircraft, including antimissile capabilities. Both articles cited anonymous sources….

  9. The #subpoenas contain few specifics, asking only that the #journalists testify “in regard to an alleged violation of federal criminal law.” They were issued by #JayClayton, the #USattorney in Manhattan. Clayton, who leads one of the country’s most prominent law enforcement offices, was recently nominated by #Trump to serve as director of national intelligence [ #DNI ].

  10. In some cases, the #subpoenas were delivered by federal agents who showed up at #reporters’ homes.

The #NYT denounced the admin’s actions.

“The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the #Constitution & the #PressFreedom it protects,” said David McCraw, The NYT’s top newsroom lawyer, in a statement Friday evening.

  11. The #Trump admin issued #subpoenas Friday to several journalists for #TheNewYorkTimes, after the news outlet reported this week on #security concerns involving #Trump’s new #Qatar donated #AirForceOne.

The subpoenas — which seek to force the #reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday — were an extraordinary escalation in Trump’s efforts to #threaten & #intimidate independent news organizations.

  12. A quotation from Henry Commager

Who are those who are really disloyal? Those who inflame racial hatreds, who sow religious and class dissensions. Those who subvert the Constitution by violating the freedom of the ballot box. Those who make a mockery of majority rule by the use of the filibuster. Those who impair democracy by denying equal educational facilities. Those who frustrate justice by lynch law or by making a farce of jury trials. Those who deny freedom of speech and of the press and of assembly. Those who press for special favors against the interest of the commonwealth. Those who regard public office as a source of private gain. Those who would exalt the military over the civil. Those who for selfish and private purposes stir up national antagonisms and expose the world to the ruin of war.

Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998) American historian, writer, activist
Essay (1947-09), “Who Is Loyal to America?” sec. 3, Harper’s Magazine, Vol. 195, No. 1168

Despotism can no more exist in a nation until the liberty of the press be destroyed, than night can happen before the sun is set.
