  1. What started as just redoing some cables around my desk turned in to a whole home office rearrangement (I share the space with our dining room). What I thought was going to be a half hour of moving and labeling a few cables turned in to 6 hours of rearrangement, cleaning, and throwing out junk. Went up and down the basement stairs 24 times according to my watch. But, I think I’m cool with the results.

“The Home Office plans to proscribe the rap act known in terrorist circles as ‘Macklemore’. This follows disturbing footage of the keffiyeh-wearing savage rallying a crowd of 80,000 at an Ed Sheeran concert. Now I know what you’re all thinking: how the hell did Ed Sheeran get 80,000 fans?”

  8. A short explanation for Home Office Minister Jess Phillips re: why attempts to restrict kids to using “teenager” phones will be doomed to failure

~14 years ago a friend – a highly respected & credentialed security consultant – shared that he’d set up all manner of content filtering & parental blocks on his home network, for the safety of his then ~14yo son.

So the kid went to the local High Street and spent ~£20 of pocket money on a secondhand Android phone.

He said: “I have strongly mixed feelings about this. I don’t know whether to be angry or impressed.”

That’s it. Things have not changed in the time which has passed, if anything the supply of competent inexpensive second- and thirdhand hardware has become even more abundant.

To achieve what the minister suggests below will require regulation of the sales of all phones, laptops, and tablets, not to mention games consoles and IoT, including in the second hand market and on the likes of eBay and so forth.

The likely rebuttal will be “we must not let perfect be the enemy of good” and “if we can save one child it will be worth it” – but this is nonsense, because we also have to forbid software freedoms. You would have to ban installations of Linux – including under virtualisation and with Raspberry Pi – and other alternative operating systems like Tails. And you would also have to stop kids learning how to code using cloud environments which would allow them to circumvent all of this control.

Waiting for “child friendly” software to somehow trickle down into the second hand market is not going to make the child’s safety activists happy, and it is not going to prevent systems being reinstalled with operating systems that do not implement the controls.

Jess Philips, Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls in the Home Office, in the FT today (archived here) says:

The minister charged with tackling violence against girls has called on smartphone makers to do more to embed child protection technology into their devices, as she defended the UK’s new requirements for online age verification.

Jess Phillips said it is “absolutely imperative” that device manufacturers and the developers of their operating systems take greater responsibility for blocking pornographic imagery from children’s phones.

“I want to see tech companies putting as much resource and capability into this as they do into addictive algorithms,” Philips, the minister for safeguarding, told the Financial Times in an interview.

    And:

Phillips said: “If there are very easy means of getting around [the rules], then obviously government has to look at that.”

Regulating the second hand market is where you will have to begin.

  9. #UKGovernment expands #police use of #FacialRecognition vans

by Kate Whannel, August 13, 2025

"More live facial recognition (#LFR) vans will be rolled out across seven police forces in England to locate suspects for crimes including sexual offences, violent assaults and homicides, the Home Office has announced.

"The forces will get access to 10 new vans equipped with cameras, which scan the faces of people walking past and check them against a list of wanted people.

"The government says the technology has been used in London to make 580 arrests in 12 months, including 52 registered sex offenders who breached their conditions.

"However, campaign group #BigBrotherWatch said the 'significant expansion of the #SurveillanceState' was 'alarming'.

"Live facial recognition was first used in #England and #Wales in 2017 during the Uefa Champions League final football match in Cardiff.

"Since then its use has largely been confined to #SouthWales, #London and #Essex including at a Beyoncé concert to scan for paedophiles and terrorists [like elderly Palestine Action activists!]

"The government is now funding 10 vans equipped with LFR to be shared between seven forces, approximately doubling the number of vehicles.

    "The seven forces are Greater #Manchester, #WestYorkshire, #Bedfordshire, #Surrey, #Sussex, #ThamesValley and #Hampshire.

"The technology identifies people by taking measurements of facial features including the distance between the eyes and the length of the jawline and then comparing the data to to an existing watchlist.

"Each van will be staffed with a trained officer who checks the matches identified by the technology.

"Simultaneously, the government is holding a consultation on what safeguards are needed to "ensure transparency and public confidence", ahead of drawing up a new legal framework.

"Big Brother Watch is bringing a legal challenge against the #MetPolice's use of the technology, alongside #ShaunThompson, who was wrongly identified by an LFR camera.

#Rebecca Vincent, interim director of Big Brother Watch, said: 'Police have interpreted the absence of any legislative basis authorising the use of this intrusive technology as carte blanche to continue to roll it out unfettered, despite the fact that a crucial judicial review on the matter is pending.

" ;The #HomeOffice must scrap its plans to roll out further live facial recognition capacity until robust legislative safeguards are established.'

"Labour peer Baroness Chakrabarti told the BBC the technology was 'incredibly intrusive' and 'some would say this is yet another move towards a total #surveillance society'."

16. 📢New Publication Alert!

🔖'Reign of the Beast' by Adrian Desmond is out now!

🔎In the 1830s, decades before #Darwin published the 'Origin of Species', a museum of evolution flourished in #London. 'Reign of the Beast' pieces together the extraordinary story of this lost working-man's institution and its enigmatic owner, the wine merchant #WDSaull. Saull outraged polite #society by putting humanity’s #ape #ancestry on display.

He weaponized his #museum #fossils & empowered #artisans with knowledge of deep #geological time that undermined the #Creationist base of the #Anglican state. His geology museum called the biggest in Britain, housed over 20,000 fossils, including famous dinosaurs.

Now multi-award-winning author Adrian Desmond undertakes a thorough reading of #HomeOffice spy reports and subversive street prints to re-establish Saull's pivotal place at the intersection of the history of #geology, #atheism, #socialism, & #working-class #radicalism.
