Good Morning #Canada
The Canadian Coast Guard maintains a fleet of hundreds of ships across the country. Duties include: search & rescue, #Icebreakers, survey & sounding, marine research, supply & maintenance, environmental cleanup, and enforcement.
This highly useful government website lists every type of #CCG vessel, what they're used for, how many are in service, and includes links to specs on each ship. Highly recommended for naval nerds.#CanadaIsAwesome #CCG_WEEK

Good Morning #Canada
This #CCG_Week series was prompted by a birthday gift from PM Carney on Aug 24th (my DOB), when he announced 6 new #Icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard. The new ships are needed to replace our 2 existing Icebreakers and meet commitments under the ICE Pact, an agreement between USA, Canada & Finland to build Icebreakers and secure the Arctic.#CanadaIsAwesome #CCG

Phyllis Munday: Conqueror of the Rockies
Mountaineer and naturalist Phyllis Munday was a true trailblazer. In 1924, she and Annette Buck were the first women to summit Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. A skilled cartographer, she also mapped over 180 square kilometres of BC's wilderness, a significant contribution to Canadian geography. #Canada #Mountaineering #WomenInHistory #CanadaIsAwesome 🇨🇦

The #CCG has an enormous job covering the world's longest coastline: over 243,000 km of coast and 5.3 million square km of water. Unlike many other nations, the Canadian Coast Guard has no military, naval, or law enforcement duties. On an average day, the CCG coordinates multiple search and rescue operations, saving roughly 13 to 15 lives daily. All with only 6,700+ staff plus 4,000 volunteers in the CCG Auxiliary. -

In downtown Toronto you can find Simcoe Park and the 100 Workers Monument. Erected in 2000, it was an initiative of Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to shine a light on workplace safety. The monument features 100 plaques that describe an actual fatal on-the-job accident from 1901 to 1999, some mundane and others gruesome. A final plaque was left blank to represent future tragedy.#CanadaIsAwesome #WorkplaceSafety

Rights affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people vary greatly by country or jurisdiction—encompassing everything from the legal recognition of same-sex marriage to the death penalty for homosexuality. Notably, as of January 2025, only 38 countries recognize same-sex marriage, out of 195 recognized nations. Canada has been a leader in LGTBQ rights and, in a recent ranking, places us 5th worldwide in protecting same sex and gender affirmation. The USA ranks 23rd but is likely to drop further as the report was based on 2024 data before the MAGA morons took office.#CanadaIsAwesome #LGTBQI

It's #InternationalCoffeeDay and a good opportunity to review our place in the world when considering this morning beverage. We rank 6th in total coffee consumption and 3rd in regular drinkers (71% consume daily, average of 2.7 cups per day). Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa rank highly in terms of coffee shops per capita. Not surprising in a country where 9 out of 10 Canadians can see a Timmies from their roof.#CanadaIsAwesome #CoffeeFirst

Although I view this study with a bit of skepticism I am not above using it to once again demonstrate why our country is awesome. Canada was recently ranked #1 as the preferred work destination amongst 160+ countries. And that's before most of these new job seekers have experienced maple dipped donuts from Timmies or shopping for hockey skates at Canadian Tire.
