  1. Good Morning #Canada
The really cool visuals for the Canadian Coast Guard come from their #Icebreakers while performing their winter duties. Most of that activity happens in 2 regions: the Arctic and the Great Lakes.
Supporting the far north, and protecting our sovereignty in the region, drove the funding for 2 new Polar Class Icebreakers announced in 2021 and currently under construction on the west coast.

  2. Good Morning #Canada
The Canadian Coast Guard maintains a fleet of hundreds of ships across the country. Duties include: search & rescue, #Icebreakers, survey & sounding, marine research, supply & maintenance, environmental cleanup, and enforcement.
This highly useful government website lists every type of #CCG vessel, what they're used for, how many are in service, and includes links to specs on each ship. Highly recommended for naval nerds.

  3. Good Morning #Canada
This #CCG_Week series was prompted by a birthday gift from PM Carney on Aug 24th (my DOB), when he announced 6 new #Icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard. The new ships are needed to replace our 2 existing Icebreakers and meet commitments under the ICE Pact, an agreement between USA, Canada & Finland to build Icebreakers and secure the Arctic.

  8. Phyllis Munday: Conqueror of the Rockies

Mountaineer and naturalist Phyllis Munday was a true trailblazer. In 1924, she and Annette Buck were the first women to summit Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. A skilled cartographer, she also mapped over 180 square kilometres of BC's wilderness, a significant contribution to Canadian geography. #Canada #Mountaineering #WomenInHistory #CanadaIsAwesome 🇨🇦

On this day in 1932, the US and Canada signed a treaty to develop St Lawrence Seaway. That was just the beginning of cooperation between the two governments, and after a little blackmail by Canada, the full seaway opened in 1959. The system of locks, canals, and channels lowers ships by 170m over the entire 600 km length, and opens the Great Lakes to international shipping routes.

I've been binge watching Viking related series and movies lately, so a virtual visit to L'Anse aux Meadows is appropriate. This archaeological site, first excavated in the 1960s, was a Norse settlement dating to approximately 1,000 years ago. The site, located on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, existed for about a decade and served primarily as a base for exploration. On my bucket list to visit.
