Good Morning #Canada
This #CCG_Week series was prompted by a birthday gift from PM Carney on Aug 24th (my DOB), when he announced 6 new #Icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard. The new ships are needed to replace our 2 existing Icebreakers and meet commitments under the ICE Pact, an agreement between USA, Canada & Finland to build Icebreakers and secure the Arctic.#CanadaIsAwesome #CCG

Phyllis Munday: Conqueror of the Rockies
Mountaineer and naturalist Phyllis Munday was a true trailblazer. In 1924, she and Annette Buck were the first women to summit Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. A skilled cartographer, she also mapped over 180 square kilometres of BC's wilderness, a significant contribution to Canadian geography. #Canada #Mountaineering #WomenInHistory #CanadaIsAwesome 🇨🇦

The #CCG has an enormous job covering the world's longest coastline: over 243,000 km of coast and 5.3 million square km of water. Unlike many other nations, the Canadian Coast Guard has no military, naval, or law enforcement duties. On an average day, the CCG coordinates multiple search and rescue operations, saving roughly 13 to 15 lives daily. All with only 6,700+ staff plus 4,000 volunteers in the CCG Auxiliary. -

This week PM Carney announced the building of 6 new #Icebreakers for the #CCG - Canadian Coast Guard services. In commemorate that event I think we need a #CCG_Week full of #History , facts and stories about this important department. The CCG was officially announced in 1962, although many of its responsibilities were handled by various ministries dating back to 1867. Fasten your life jackets for the week ahead. -

Toronto's Line 5, referred to as the Eglinton Crosstown, has been open for over 6 months and the general consensus locally is that it's pretty good. This excellent video provides a review of the LRT, including the supporting network, benefits, negatives, and Toronto's overall design philosophy for #PublicTransit. It rightly points out Canada is generally bad at design and is still in love with cars.#CanadaIsAwesome #UrbanDesign #WalkableCities.

Did you know that Toronto, widely acknowledged as the centre of the universe, is the #2 city in North America with the most #Skyscrapers measured by buildings over 150m. That factoid is brought to you by Skyscraper Day, when every September 3rd we are encouraged to look up and appreciate the towering architecture. And there are 14 new skyscrapers nearing completion.Skyscrapers: The Canadian Encyclopedia

In downtown Toronto you can find Simcoe Park and the 100 Workers Monument. Erected in 2000, it was an initiative of Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to shine a light on workplace safety. The monument features 100 plaques that describe an actual fatal on-the-job accident from 1901 to 1999, some mundane and others gruesome. A final plaque was left blank to represent future tragedy.#CanadaIsAwesome #WorkplaceSafety

I've been binge watching Viking related series and movies lately, so a virtual visit to L'Anse aux Meadows is appropriate. This archaeological site, first excavated in the 1960s, was a Norse settlement dating to approximately 1,000 years ago. The site, located on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, existed for about a decade and served primarily as a base for exploration. On my bucket list to visit.#CanadaIsAwesome #Vikings #Vinland #History

Today is Appreciate A Dragon Day. Did you know that Canada had its very own dragon patrolling our western prairies. You likely didn't notice because it lived approximately 77 million years ago. Cryodrakon boreas, a previously unknown type of pterosaur, was one of the largest flying animals that ever lived. The name means “frozen dragon of the north wind” and it was discovered in Alberta's Dinosaur Park.#CanadaIsAwesome #Cryodrakon #Dinosaur

Did you know that more than 25% of the pingos on the planet are in Canada, including the 2nd tallest pingo in the world? Approximately 1,350 pingos reside in Canada and Pingo Canadian Landmark is a natural area protecting eight pingos near Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. Apparently this park is a popular tourist attraction for something I didn't know existed before I had my coffee today.#CanadaIsAwesome #NWT #pingo
