25 years ago, as the USA was under terrorist attack, Canada stepped up to accept 230+ international flights across the country and provide accommodation and food for over 30,000 travellers, many of whom were Americans. Gander became the most famous host as the small town of less than 10,000 took in 6,100 stranded passengers. But that compassion was evident across Canada.

#HappyBirthday to Brooke Mackenzie Henderson, born OTD in 1997 in Smiths Falls Ontario. She is Canada's most accomplished golfer with 20 pofessional wins, including 14 on the LPGA. Henderson was named the Canadian Press female athlete of the year for 2015, 2017 and 2018. At the recent Canadian championship tournament she was praised by younger Canadian competitors for being a role model and helping in them in their careers.

It has been named as the world's tallest by a supreme authority, Guiness World Records, so ignore the haters who thumb their noses at this achievement.

It's interesting how Canada settled our west versus a more violent and chaotic process in the USA. The implementation of the North West Mounted Police, today's RCMP, was key as was a policy of signing treaties with #IndigenousPeople. And settlement of the west was important to reduce the tendency of Americans to seize open land despite borders.

In downtown Toronto you can find Simcoe Park and the 100 Workers Monument. Erected in 2000, it was an initiative of Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to shine a light on workplace safety. The monument features 100 plaques that describe an actual fatal on-the-job accident from 1901 to 1999, some mundane and others gruesome. A final plaque was left blank to represent future tragedy.

#Hotdogs vs #Hamburgers ? We're serving both at our family #BBQ today but internet data, therefore 100% true, indicates Canadians eat an average of 8 hotdogs annually versus 20 Hamburgers. Even if we consider that Costco Canada sells 36.6 million hotdogs every year, there must be some outliers dragging up those averages because I'm well below average. That's what she said last night...

Happy National Hotdog Day to all those who don't care about what they eat. Did you know that the Montréal hot dog is a would famous Canadian gourmet meal? Neither did I. Montréal had a 66 year ban on street carts that was lifted in 2013. So small diners had created steamed #Hotdogs and sausages, placed in a side loaded steamed bun with your choice of toppings. Today both steamé or grilled options are available.

Known as "the well", it's a thermal battery full of water that provides heating and cooling to surrounding buildings. We should thank Prince Albert for helping to save the Beaver. His choice of wearing a silk tophat in the mid 1800s has been cited as one of the reasons fashion moved away from Beaver hats and thereby saved them after almost 3 centuries of trapping. And silk hats were easier and cheaper to make. Whatever the reasons fashion almost made the Beaver extinct, first in Europe and then in North America. When fashion trends shifted, the Beaver was saved.

Today we celebrate a little known Canadian inventor who created "The Steam Pleasure Palace". Almost 3 decades before Henry Ford, Quebecer Henry Seth Taylor built Canada's first self-propelled car in the 1860s. Nicknamed The Steam Pleasure Palace, the steam powered car had a single seat and could reach speeds of up to 24 kilometers per hour.

I've been binge watching Viking related series and movies lately, so a virtual visit to L'Anse aux Meadows is appropriate. This archaeological site, first excavated in the 1960s, was a Norse settlement dating to approximately 1,000 years ago. The site, located on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, existed for about a decade and served primarily as a base for exploration. On my bucket list to visit.
