Apparently it's International Bacon Day - not to be confused with Bacon Lovers Day (August 20th) or National Bacon Day (December 20th). And you are only allowed to celebrate with #Bacon, not Back Bacon or Peameal Bacon. Follow the rules and no one gets hurt.

Yesterday's post on Skyscrapers elicited a response from @wordstitcher asking if a list of old Post Office buildings existed. I couldn't find one but did discover the Heritage Railway Station Act that has saved 150+ stations across Canada. A few weeks ago I posted a poll that ultimately named Brampton as Canada’s most boring city. But today I present to you a unique art installation in the Mount Pleasant community. The Ghost Train, by artist Ron Baird, reveals a silhouette of a steam train as the viewer moves around the piece. Its name means 'Land of the Ancestors' in Dënesųłıné. Over the past week we've noticed an increasing amount of #CanadaGeese V formations flying overhead. Living so close to Lake Simcoe that's not unusual but it seems to be happening earlier this year. It's estimated that there are more than 7 million Canada Geese in North America and migrations are becoming shorter or nonexistent.

#HappyBirthday to Aleksandar Živojinović, born OTD in Fernie BC. He is better known as Alex Lifeson, the guitarist for the rock band Rush. In 1968, he co-founded the band with drummer John Rutsey and bassist and lead vocalist Jeff Jones. One month later, Jones was replaced by Geddy Lee and in 1974, Rutsey was succeeded by Neil Peart. I was never a fan but you can't dispute their worldwide success. -

An interesting #Immigration wave that is not well known outside of Quebec is referred to as The King's Daughters (French: filles du roy in the spelling of the era). The program sponsored by King Louis XIV managed the recruitment and Immigration of approximately 830 young French women to New France between 1663 and 1673. Please excuse my self indulgence today but I'm celebrating a milestone - my 70th birthday. I feel strangely confident at this age, in a better mental state versus when I turned 60. I'm in decent physical shape and downsizing in 2025 has given us financial security.
Being born in 1956 means the 1960s was a pretty important decade for me growing up in Toronto. So this short video brought back a lot of memories. -

In 1967 we celebrated Canada's 100th birthday. In that same year the Republic of Rathnelly, a small neighbourhood near Casa Loma in Toronto, declared their independence. They created a flag, announced a Queen, and issued passports. It was a brilliant act of #CivilDisobedience meant to stop the planned Spadina Expressway that would have cut the #Community in half. I hope we see innovative protests to stop Ford's Hwy 413. -

Stratford Ontario is recognized worldwide for its theatrical arts festival, hosting Shakespearean and original plays throughout the summer. But from 1900 to the 1950s, this community was the #Furniture manufacturing centre of Canada. All of the major manufacturers had a presence in Stratford and at its peak the town supplied 1/6 of all furniture in Canada. The last furniture company closed in 2006.#CanadaIsAwesome #History

You may think that some municipalities, in their efforts to attract tourists, must have been smoking something really good when they decided on their #BigStuffInSmallTowns monument. That's how you end up with a 6 metre long tobacco pipe in St. Claude Manitoba. In downtown Toronto you can find Simcoe Park and the 100 Workers Monument. Erected in 2000, it was an initiative of Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to shine a light on workplace safety. The monument features 100 plaques that describe an actual fatal on-the-job accident from 1901 to 1999, some mundane and others gruesome. I think most Canadians know what an #Inukshuk is, but this post is intended to give you a greater understanding of these iconic piles of rock. An inuksuk, or inukshuk (plural inuksuit) is a type of stone landmark or cairn built and used by Inuit, including Iñupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the North American Arctic. These structures are found in northern Canada, north of the Arctic Circle, which is dominated by the tundra biome and has areas with few natural landmarks.
