When I'm working on a #TravelCanada post I sometimes realize that I don't give Saskatchewan a lot of attention. I apologize to the Saskies in my audience. Apparently it's International Bacon Day - not to be confused with Bacon Lovers Day (August 20th) or National Bacon Day (December 20th). And you are only allowed to celebrate with #Bacon, not Back Bacon or Peameal Bacon. Follow the rules and no one gets hurt.

Yesterday's post on Skyscrapers elicited a response from @wordstitcher asking if a list of old Post Office buildings existed. I couldn't find one but did discover the Heritage Railway Station Act that has saved 150+ stations across Canada. Many are unique "Chateau" styled buildings that are still in use or have been repurposed as libraries or community centres.#CanadaIsAwesome #Architecture #History

If I ever got a hankering to work for the Government it would be with #ParksCanada. Me driving around in a pickup truck telling Grizzlies to behave. Parks Canada manages 37 National Parks, 11 national park reserves, 5 National Marine Conservation Areas, 171 National Historic Sites, 1 National Urban Park (Rouge), and 1 National Landmark (Pingo). Established May 19, 1911, it was the world's 1st national park service. -

Banff and Jasper #NationalParks are popular #TravelCanada destinations every summer, averaging 4m and 2m annual visitors respectively. Perhaps you are looking for similar experiences but maybe want to go somewhere with fewer crowds. Thankfully #ParksCanada is thinking about you and has recommendations for the hiking trail less traveled.

Did you know that a Dodecahedron is a 12-letter name for any 12-sided shape. And did you also know that on this day in 1962, the Canadian Government decreed that our dodecahedron nickel was decadent and that round was right. Pre-1962 nickels are now pretty much worth a nickel, but a coin in "mint condition" has been known to fetch a few pennies more.Have you noticed there are more coin buying events in your neighbourhoods over the past few years? Some of that activity is driven by buyers taking advantage of people wanting to sell old jewelry, collectibles, or jars of coins that are sitting in the back of drawers or closets. But the rise of digital transactions, particularly increased during COVID when no one wanted to touch your infected money, has increased the collectible value of coins and, in some cases, the actual metal value exceeds the face value.

On June 30th, 1987, a Canadian one-dollar coin was introduced, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint at its facility in Winnipeg. The beloved #Loonie was born. But did you know the iconic Loon image wasn't meant to be the coin in production and only came to be because the original master dies were lost by a courier. April 15th, 1870, US silver coins were no longer accepted at par value in Canada. The Canadian government had announced early in 1870 this deadline and began exchanging U.S. silver at a discount. This action was part of a broader effort by the Canadian government to establish its own national coinage. A significant portion of the U.S coin collected was sent to Britain to be melted and converted to bullion.#CanadaIsAwesome #Numismatist

OTD in 1871, the Uniform Currency Act and the Bank Act standardized dollars across Canada and established denominations. Today, this means we all don't sound like stereotypical British folk haggling at your local fish market. The passage of this Act also put an end to private banks issuing their own notes and injecting currency into the market on a whim. On this day in 1986, a rare 1921 Canadian 50-cent coin was auctioned in New York for $22,000. Another example of this rare coin was sold at auction in February 2015 for $220,000 ($266,200 with buyer's premium). The 1921 50-cent is called the "King of Canadian Coins," and many were melted down in 1929, but some survived and are prized by collectors. It's Sunday and a good day to remember that on this day in 1911, the government of Canada put an end to all godless coins. The phrase "Dei Gratia," which ranslates to "by the grace of God," was reinstated after it was accidentally left off Canadian coins in 1911, leading to coins being called "godless". The omission was due to Finance Minister William Fielding not noticing the omission when he approved the design.#CanadaIsAwesome #Numismatist

October 19, 1911 the Royal Mint in London sends dies for a Canadian $1 coin to the Canadian Mint in Ottawa. This 1st #Loonie (in silver) would never see circulation. The Royal Mint had produced 3 samples, called Pattern Coins, and for decades 1 was misplaced and the other was sought by collectors. All 3 are now in Canada with the last one purchased at auction for $552k and given to the Canadian Mint for their museum.#CanadaIsAwesome #Numismatics

Just finished putting up the decorations so we're ready for Turkey Vulture Day.
The Turkey Vulture breeds in southern farmland and open forest habitats in all provinces and their population has dramatically increased in the last 50 years. They use their keen vision and excellent sense of smell to locate food, flying low enough to detect the gasses produced by decaying flesh.
