  1. Office Stuff

I worked in the office today. It was the first time in over three weeks. That’s crazy. I went on vacation for the last week of July, and then I had the tooth pain nightmare complete with antibiotics that made me feel sick all the time, and then I had the two teeth extracted and couldn’t really brush my teeth for nearly a week along with another round of antibiotics that made me feel sick all the time.

I just didn’t feel up to working around other people. I felt well enough to work, but not well enough to feel like I could be out in public.

My company wants us in the office 40% of the time but the technical end of it is actually 40% of the month. So this month I’m doing all of it at the end of the month. I generally try to do it by the week but this time I’m going by the book and doing it for the month. What does that mean? That means I’m in the office four days this week. That’s what I used to do pre-pandemic. It used to be normal. Now? Now it’s suck.

  2. 🎉🎈 The weekend: a #centenarian now plagued by the existential crisis of hybrid work and the dreaded 'skiveday Friday.' Surely, this groundbreaking revelation from The Guardian will change absolutely nothing in your life as you continue to scroll past their 100-menu-item website 🤦‍♂️.

  3. A couple of noteworthy quotes:

"Telecommuting is one important way of stretching our dwindling oil supplies and forestalling global warming while we invent viable and sustainable alternatives to those portents of disaster”

Remember, Jack wrote that fine article back in 2006... What were you doing back then? 🤔

  4. “Telecommuting is the substitution of information technology for the daily commute to and from the office” - Management by Results 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/disa

The one & only Jack Nilles wrote that piece back in 2006. Pretty crazy, eh?!? 🤯 Now, read through it carefully, while we're in the midst of this week's nasty heat weave 🥵, and ask yourself:

What are we doing wrong?!?! 🤦🏻🤬

  6. Although perhaps my favourite:

"When people aren’t in the office, it’s harder to command and control. Leaders can’t intimidate by hovering over cubicle desks and slamming doors. They can’t establish their dominance by summoning people to a conference room and pounding their fists on the table. They can’t even make direct eye contact to stare people down"

Choose wisely (with your feet) who you're working for👌🏻😎

  7. A couple of noteworthy quotes:

"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar"

"[…] self-centered leaders tend to struggle with the idea of employees making independent choices about where to work"

Like I said, incredibly useful reminder showcasing some early signs to watch out for when working with sociopaths / psychopaths

  8. "[…] ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities" 👉🏻 archive.ph/QpMio

Fascinating new research acting as a friendly reminder: Whenever your manager asks you to return to the office, because of, you know, productivity, culture, innovation, etc. you may actually be dealing with a sociopath / psychopath 😤🤯🤬

  9. @Valdis Many thanks, Valdis! 🙏🏻😊 Yeah, I saw that article earlier on this morning here in Mastodon, we talked about it in the community as well.

It looks like the masks are *finally* coming off, right? Specially, with poignant quotes like this one:

"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar" 🤯😱

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #FlexibleWork #Leadership

  10. "We taught the remote workers to be proactive about communicating with their group members; not to wait in hopes of receiving calls. Often, you can tell whether someone is feeling well or poorly just by the tone of voice. We taught the managers of remote workers to check that effective communications were happening"

Oooh, for those at the back ... Jack coined #Telework in 1973!!! 😍👍🏻

    Does that ring a bell? 🤯👉🏻 #EnergyCrisis

    #RemoteWork #DistanceWorking #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Teleworking

  11. "In my opinion, given the technology available today, 90%+ of most business situations (other than the obvious hands-on things like your annual medical checkup) do not require face-time" 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/face

You know what's pretty crazy about that quote ? It was written by the father of the concept of #Teleworking, Jack Nilles, back in 2010! 😳🤯

Yeah, we know, #RemoteWork is nothing new, and yet ... 🤔

  12. 🧵 2/n

In this research, we exploit a unique data set and approach using spatial design as a variable of interest. We compare nine workplace designs for companies in the financial industry completed before 2019 with nine cases finished post-pandemically. All were designed by AIS Interiors to control for potential biases arising from distinct design styles.

  13. “When employees know that recovery is valued rather than merely permitted, they return more focused, more engaged and better equipped to do their best work. […] these practices communicate something critical about organizational culture. They tell employees that leadership recognizes they are human beings, not simply units of output”

From de- to re-humanisation of the workplace 💪🏻😎

  14. A couple of noteworthy quotes from that article, worth while reflecting some more on:

“[…] cognitive restoration is not a luxury, but rather a prerequisite for sustained performance. Human beings are simply not able to operate at peak intensity indefinitely. Periods of recovery improve attention, creativity, motivation, decision-making and overall job performance”

    #Management #Leadership #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Burnout

  15. “What if the practices being eliminated are some of the very things helping employees remain productive in the first place?”

In the midst of the stupidity behind constantly perpetuating, to the extenuation, the "Cult of Busyness", this short piece 👉🏻 hrexecutive.com/as-burnout-ris is a rather refreshing read.

    Does #Management / #Leadership *truly* care about their employees' overall well-being? 🤔

  16. “[…] when policies are geared toward mothers or parents, managers have worse perceptions of remote working in regard to commitments, productivity, team spirit, and promotion opportunities”

    👉🏻 fastcompany.com/91547074/bosse

Dehumanisation of work at play? 🤔 Gosh, the lack of #empathy & understanding of #caregiving needs & wants by employers is just staggering! 😤

    What a bunch of ars*h*les! 😡

  17. “Stressful circumstances, long commutes, caregiving, disability, a toxic manager, push people to negotiate for WFH in the first place” 👉🏻 theworkforward.substack.com/p/

And, yet, all we keep hearing / reading about is how #RemoteWork killed entry-level jobs #GenZ and is making us all feel lonelier, more isolated even 😤

Gosh, the nerve! What a bunch of BS! 😡

  18. “Gen Z workers love to yap—or chit chat for extended periods of time—which experts told Fortune’s Emma Burleigh likely stems from the generation’s isolation and loneliness during the pandemic”

Ah-ha! Of course, you see? It's much "easier" to gossip while on-site and get away with it than having to annotate such gossip through social, digital tools for everyone else to see it AND remember 😜👍🏻

It's all about work, work, work, right? 🤔😝

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork

  19. "#GenZ is actually the most enthusiastic generation about working in the office and are there 3 days a week" 👉🏻 fortune.com/2025/05/03/gen-z-m

“They say going to the office gives them the chance to learn more from coworkers and build friendships”

    Of course! Except ... 👇🏻🤔

“Workers aged 35-54 reported the lowest satisfaction with being in the office, citing environmental concerns, and desires for better technology, flexibility, and food”

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork

  20. […] remote work may even be a risk factor for AI displacement, since managers who mainly interact with reports over Slack may view their work as more automatable”

See? That quote alone hints the issue is not #DistanceWorking but more along the lines of, yet again, another clear exhibit of poor #Leadership skills when managing virtual teams.

    #GenAI #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #GenZ

  21. "What if remote working, not AI, is to blame for weak junior hiring?" 👉🏻 archive.is/6f8YT

Oh, seriously? You couldn't possibly think of a better argument to whitewash #GenAI within the workplace than to blame #DistanceWorking for not hiring enough young talent, eh?

    Shame on you, FT! 😡

    Do better! 😤

  22. “During the Corona period, we developed many systems of work from home, online meetings and video conferences, and we even became accustomed to them. Today, the demands of the times are such that if we restart these systems, it will be in the national interest. We must prioritise work from home, online conferences and virtual meetings again”

    Why isn't this recommendation👆🏻happening in #Europe? 🤔

  23. "[…] if you haven’t embraced remote or hybrid working yet, the fuel price crisis could be the motivation you need to do so"

One for those at the far back 👉🏻 inc.com/kit-eaton/rising-fuel-

"It can reduce pressure and financial burdens borne by your staff, and it conveys a certain level of trust from executives that employees will work in a dedicated manner for the good of the company" 👈🏻 You reckon? 🤔

    And yet...? 🙄

  24. "Leaders found that employees felt more trusted, valued, and respected when they could work from home, plus they saved a meaningful amount money on clothing and transportation" 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

"Working together, employees and leaders cocreated a new working model they called “home-centric.” The default was for people to work from home, but employees would come together for onboarding, training, and culture-building activities" 👌🏻😍

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork

  25. "Most companies treat employees as a cost to be managed rather than customers who choose how much of their personal energy and effort to bring to work every day"

If only managers / leaders would pay more attention to employees' needs & wants AND try to meet them along the way, right?

This article 👉🏻 sloanreview.mit.edu/article/wh is quite an interesting read on shaping up the #EmployeeExperience at the workplace.
