LA Times Promotes Occupied Golan Heights as Part of Israel in Sponsored Travel Guide
The Los Angeles Times is publishing a sponsored travel guide titled "9 Days in Israel" that lists the occupied Golan Heights as a destination within Israel without acknowledging its status as Syrian territory occupied by Israel.
The guide promotes the Golan Heights for its open landscapes, vineyards, and scenic views, recommending wineries and other tourist destinations alongside sites in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The presentation effectively normalizes Israel's control over the territory while omitting its illegal status under international law.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and annexed the territory in 1981.
The UN Security Council declared the annexation "null and void and without international legal effect."
The United States recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 2019, while Colombia became the only other government to follow that position this week.

Israeli authorities forcibly closed six schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in occupied Jerusalem, depriving around 800 children of continuing their education. The closures followed orders issued by the Israeli Ministry of Education, based on two laws passed by the Knesset that restrict UNRWA’s operations in areas Israel considers to be under its sovereignty.
Three of the closed schools are located in Shuafat Refugee Camp, while the others are in the neighborhoods of Silwan, Sur Baher and Wadi al Joz. The schools provided education based on the Palestinian curriculum to students between the ages of approximately 6 and 15.
On May 8, Israeli security forces accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education and the Jerusalem municipality entered three schools in Shuafat while more than 550 students were inside, ordered their evacuation and closed the schools. The identities of staff members were recorded, and one staff member was temporarily detained.

Colombia has announced its recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, becoming the second UN member state after the United States to take this position.
Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967 and later extended its laws to the territory in 1981, a move widely rejected by the international community.
The decision comes amid rapidly deepening ties between Colombia and Israel.
In July 2026, Colombia decided to restore full diplomatic relations with Israel, appoint ambassadors, and move its embassy to occupied Jerusalem, following the election of Álvaro de la Espriella as president.

Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque and head of Jerusalem’s Higher Islamic Council, has warned of expanding Israeli settlement plans targeting Silwan, Batn Al-Hawa, Al-Bustan and Wadi Hilweh around Al-Aqsa.
He says demolitions, evictions and restrictions on Palestinian construction are being used to displace residents and reshape the area demographically, while settler groups are seizing Palestinian homes and land.
Sabri warned that the plans could turn Palestinian neighbourhoods around Al-Aqsa into isolated enclaves surrounded by settlements, particularly through projects linked to the so-called City of David.

At least 52 Palestinian prisoners have reportedly died under torture in Israeli prisons, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Media Office.
The report also says 360 bodies were returned without identification, with only one Gaza prisoner’s body formally handed back to his family.
More than 25,600 arrests have been recorded in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since the start of the war, while authorities continue to withhold full data on Gaza detainees, raising serious concerns over their fate and conditions.

An Israeli court ordered Palestinian man Areen Al Zaanin to pay around 400,000 shekels, approximately $133,000, in compensation to Israeli rabbi Yehuda Glick.
The case dates back to 2020, when Glick raided a condolence gathering in occupied Jerusalem. Al Zaanin said he was not present during the incident and was unaware of the trial or charges against him, noting that he was detained at the time and did not receive any notification regarding the case.
The ruling was issued in absentia, with Al Zaanin also ordered to cover court costs and legal fees.
