We met with a lawyer yesterday to set up a revocable estate trust for our kids. Cost ended up being 0.5% of the assessed value of our assets, which is a fraction of what it would cost to have everything go through probate. Amendments are easy and it's good for something like 365 years.

It was not an option I had even really been aware of until last week, but it should work for our needs.

I am sure this has been proposed before, but here I go anyway...

Simple tax fix to improve wealth inequality. Progressive taxation of capital gains.

Forget this long/short term stuff, the "long term" is so short it is ridiculous anyway.

Just make a progressive scale: exempt the first $5,000 (pick a number), 5% on the next $20K, 15% on the next $50K and so on. Making up these numbers, I am sure there are better ones.

I think separating our cap gains from regular income makes some sense, but taxing any amount at the same rate is not very smart. Exempting some amount at the bottom helps small investors and small business people. Having higher rates at the top help reign in people at the top who don't actually do anything and just live off their inherited wealth.
