  1. I wish I were a tree

    I wish I were a tree.

    Rooted to one place.
    Friend of the wind.
    Sun bather.
    Rain catcher.

    Home to many.
    Servant to seasons.
    Shade to the hot human.

I am sure I would find the prunings painful,
    the winters cold,
and perhaps I would worry about the inevitable fall.

    But I doubt it.

For the roar of sap within and the caress of the elements without would drown out all other noisy distractions from what it means to simply
    be
    Tree.

  6. I've been sitting with something all week: the self-improvement industry has trained us to treat ourselves like projects. Always optimizing, always behind, always one more goal away from being enough. But inner peace isn't something you achieve. It's what's left when you stop chasing and start noticing. You are not a project. You are a person. That distinction changes everything.

  7. Worrywart

    I am a worrier.

Somehow I think that worrying gives me a measure of control over uncontrollable situations.

I have this idea that if I constantly imagine the worst-case scenario, then it won’t happen. A prediction of a morbid future somehow keeps it at bay.

That way I won’t be surprised.

It might be true or not, but it doesn’t leave much room for positive thoughts.

    Or faith in God.

Worrying is just another side of fear, fear running roughshod over trusting the freedom of choice.

I worry a loved one may hurt herself. It would hurt deeply, but what can my worrying do? Except exacerbate the situation by keeping me from being centered, present, prayerful, and hopeful…

Trust is not the answer to worry. Prayer is.

I cannot begin to count the number of years accumulated from the hundreds of sleepless nights I have spent in fretful worry or rage.

Anger is simply another side of the restless coin. I do not believe that God can handle the situation, conversation, conflict, relationship . . . so I must carry on endless conversations in my head rather than simply releasing everything in prayer.

An old song comes to mind . . .  “bigger than all my problems, bigger than all my fears, God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see.”

Let go and let God. Trite perhaps. But in essence quite correct. My hands have become arthritic talons from holding on to so many regrets, slights, grudges, dreams, hurts, wishes …

It is time once again to release the reins.

  12. Watching people today talk about choosing peace over achievement, and I feel it in my bones. Not because ambition is wrong — but because I've sat across from too many people who got everything they chased and still felt empty. Peace isn't the reward at the end of the race. It's the ground you stand on while you run. You can choose it right now. This moment. This breath.

  18. Saw a question today: comfort or inner peace? I've been sitting with it, and here's what I keep coming back to. Comfort is a cushion — it softens the fall but doesn't keep you standing. Inner peace is the ground itself. It doesn't stop the rain, but it means you're not standing on quicksand when it comes. I'll take the ground every time.

Magnifique ! 27. I CAN BE SAD
WITHOUT MAKING IT A PROJECT 💎

Something happened recently in a close friendship. Nothing dramatic. No great argument. No doors slammed. Just that peculiar feeling of someone becoming more distant.

And immediately the mind went to work. What happened? Was it something I said? Should I explain? Should I write? Should I wait? Should I repair something? Have I misunderstood?

Round and round, the monkey mind had me well and truly by the short and curlies.

And then this morning I remembered one of my favourite lines from A Course in Miracles:

    “I need do nothing.”

And for once I took it absolutely literally.

THERE IS NOTHING I NEED TO DO.

I don't need to chase anyone. I don't need to work out what another person is thinking. I don't need to manufacture an explanation for their behaviour. I don't even need to make myself feel better about it.

That last bit matters. “I need do nothing” isn't a clever way of getting rid of sadness. The sadness can be here.

    WHAT DISAPPEARS IS THE ASSIGNMENT.

I wonder how much of our lives we spend trying to mentally manage things that are already happening. Other people's feelings. Their decisions. Whether they stay. Whether they leave. What they think of us. What tomorrow might bring.

We call much of this thinking. Quite a lot of it is attempted control.

Sometimes there really is something to do. Apologise. Speak. Act. Help. Change something.

    AND SOMETIMES THERE SIMPLY ISN'T.

    This morning, there isn't.

The sadness may still be here. But there is nothing I need to do about it.

  28. Awareness is knowing the world is on fire. Presence is knowing what you can do about it — in your kitchen, your neighborhood, your one small life.

31. Storm Surge

    In the end,
    will you be faithful?
    That is question.

When the storm has come and gone,
when what you thought was precious has been stripped away,
when you sleep in darkness wondering if the lights will ever come back on,
when your life in the flash of lightning reverts back to the everyday of your sisters and brothers in the warzone,
when your plane to those destinations is grounded by the thunder’s roar?

Will you awake to new resolve for justice?
Will you spend less time before the screen and more time present to loved ones and those in need of it?
Will you leave the ground to alight among the troubled?
    Will you listen to them?

Will the power that comes on be in you,
    through you,
    glowing out through your eyes,
    electrifying,
filling you with a compassion so compelling
    you become a wire
    among many
    channeling
    love and peace
    to the world?
