  5. "Public Gardens," Édouard Vuillard, 1894.

In 1894, Vuillard (1868-1940) was given free rein to decorate the apartment of one his patrons, Alexander Natason. The result was one of his best known and most praised works.

"The Public Gardens" was a cycle of six panels that depicting nannies and children in public parks. The Natansons had three daughters, and reportedly adored the works, and installed them in their dining room and salon.

The idyllic scene of children playing in a park demonstrates Nabi style well; it's intensely lovely, soothing, and not afraid to be decorative....which is why the Nabi movement remains one of my favorite art movements. Nabis were best when depicting intimate scenes, and while this piece depicts a large park, there's still a lot of intimacy here...the little knot of children playing, the tree women in conversation, and the old woman alone, lost in thought.

The Nabis were to go their separate ways in a few years; political upheavals in France in 1900 meant serious disagreements rose. But while Vuillard's style evolved, he still kept his sense of the beautiful and intimate.

    From the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

  9. Warmth and humidity always feels better when you're open to the sky, the breeze blows strong, and...well, they can get as much refreshing rain as they please, can't they? A depiction of when the goddesses of summer share some of the cooling stuff with the mortal world: Antonio Garcia Mencia's "Summer Rain".
