Of course, there are a lot of significant differences between hypnosis and drunkenness. First, alcohol has a lot of deleterious effects on your health which are absent from hypnosis. Alcohol interferes with sleep, where hypnosis helps it. And alcohol tends to defocus your thought, where hypnosis focuses it.

But both states are sought out for relaxation, fun, and letting go of inhibitions and responsibility.

Hot hypnosis take: I think that drunkenness is a better metaphor than 'sleep' for hypnosis. A lot of people just starting out with hypnosis will think they are "not really hypnotized" because they are not unconscious -- they are aware of everything around them. But in hypnosis you are aware, but uninhibited, and more likely to go along with funny ideas. And when you wake up your memory might be fuzzy or gone. Or not.

#Hypnosis and mental #pain control long threat

Long time ago - when first time I knew someone engaged in occult practices - I heard about learned skill to "disable" feeling pain. Because that person was also into more weird things I didn't learn more details as my focus was split between many allegedly paranormal things I wanted to know about. I just thought something like "having that mental control over own body would be punk AF". And I still think it would :blobcatjoy:

Many years later I heard about it again in more rational context, related to relaxation, mental states, physical symptoms of emotions etc.. And I know from own experience that e.g. prolonged stress could have real effects on body. I could believe in mind controlling pain perception but I thought it would require very highly trained skills in self-hypnosis and/or #meditation first.

And few weeks ago I started wondering about all of this again. Because I had few weird realizations I didn't earlier link with it.

Most of my life when I heard of #hypnosis, #meditation, #LucidDreaming and basically any altered mind state, it was always in context of some occult/witchcraft practices. It shaped my expectations about these phenomena and for many years I thought I should develop some supernatural powers or else it would be shameful failure.
(Of course it destroyed my already poor self-esteem :/)

Some time after I recovered from this "I have to gain psychic powers" mindset I noticed one thing. In that magic context meditation training is often described as something forced, fighting agains own mind, hard effort. In contrast, when meditation (and any relaxation/mental exercises) is mentioned in more health of wellnes-related topics it's something calm, peaceful, pleasant. More like letting things go, not make them by force.

And it's really big difference. When my perception of it shifted, I started noticing any progress in meditation and "keeping my mind quiet and calm".
