Mozilla could have said the exact same thing. And yet, a lot of gullible people here were singing their praises for their quickly coming up with a lie about how they'd implement an "AI killswitch" when they faced public outcry for announcing that they're becoming an "AI first browser" last December.
Ask yourself this:
1. If they were truly serious about the "killswitch," why did they just blurt it out in response to the backlash that obviously surprised them?
2. People I know who actually audit web browser behavior soon found that the "killswitch" really didn't do much, only disabling a few subtle things "AI" in their browser is allowed to do, at best. Why would such an evil fucking "feature" that's rapidly accelerating climate destruction and fucking many different facets of modern life up... be opt out?
3. Why the fuck would such a nasty fucking thing be in a web browser in the first place?
4. And considering all that, a lot of the fools who sung Mozilla's praises for the supposed "killswitch" also saw how their reps on Mastodon tried to pretend that it's necessary for translation. To deliberately confuse people about such a nasty fucking "feature" that's sucking all the fresh water out of the Earth, and by no coincidence, also gives the most evil shitheads on Earth easier access to your sensitive data, all while encouraging you to delegate your thinking to their technofascist slop bot. And after all that, you still trust them?
I know exactly what's going on. Because Google deliberately destroyed their search, it fucked up Mozilla's monetization model for Firefox. Which was to receive payment from Google to make Google Search default.
New CEO walks in, and probably wears invisible Saville Row suits, surrounded by sycophants. "Google's all in on the torment nexus, so now, so are we! AI FIRST BROWSER! Papa needs a second yacht!"
I don't know about you, but if a CEO announces loudly and proudly that they're jumping on a massively evil bandwagon, completely changing the stated purpose of their web browser while being certain doing this shit will make him even wealthier...
I wouldn't be so naive to assume that their "killswitch" was anything but a lie blurted out in panic, to be designed to function as a placebo for gullible fools.
But then again, I'm not a sucker ripe for exploitation as society crumbles further and further.
Yes, I know this is about Twitch. I'm about to cancel my account there. Thanks for the heads up.
PS: I know that @Vivaldi devs are working hard to keep evil shit from Chrome out of their browser, and I'm using Vivaldi right now. And that also applies to Vanadium. Same goes for @librewolf and @tor when it comes to Firefox.
Until we have an engine that's totally independent of Google and Mozilla, those are your best web browser options. Vanadium is the Chrome fork that's exclusive to GrapheneOS, but LibreWolf is available for the vast majority of desktop OSes, and Vivaldi and Tor are available on nearly all widely used desktop and mobile OSes.

I see a lot of people complaining about LLMs/AI here and the evidence for harm is overwhelming, but little action. I think an EU citizen's initiative for a ban of AI could be a good start…
So let's think what we need and what the carve-outs should be. It is important to approach this objectively and actually allow for uses that are legitimately very hard to attack.
Once we identify those we can petition for a full on ban. Yes, governments can do that if they choose to. Just treat LLMs like child pornography: If you have it on your device, you are in trouble, if you spread it, you are in trouble, if you use it, guess what…
Make AI-companies whose services can be accessed in the EU into criminal enterprises and prosecute them accordingly.
Carve out pathways to enable access to the very limited exceptions, like certain forms of accessibility-software (AI-generated alt-texts should not be allowed to use on images, but as a blind user you should be able to get a permit to run a purpose-made local model that generates a guess at an alt-text in case there is none) or in some settings where the software might be too useful to fully ignore but too dangerous to make public (akin to software that simulates nuclear effects and can be used to develop nuclear weapons).
Consider providing publicly funded and developed single-purpose software with a license that allows its use, but not its modification for broadly applicable models such as translation software.
The focus would have to be on treating LLMs as an information hazard that must be kept controlled in such a way that it cannot substitute actual thinking or creativity in humans. Only skills for which we are actively fine with them deteriorating in the general public due to a well thought out analysis that reveals that they are obsolete in general must be allowed to be substituted.
After that the point would have to be to collect support and actually campaign. Thoughts anyone?

I’m walking around my school and I’m seeing some teachers decorating their doors with awful AI renderings of themselves in lab coats or whatever (at least it kinda looks like the teacher)
Meanwhile this is my other door. I measured out four large octagons and connected the vertices to make a piece of abstract geometric art by hand (and a meter stick) The ninth graders did the rest.
I think I’ve earned the reputation of “mad, isolated genius” amongst the faculty.
