Unreal Engine is my bubble of another reality, game dev honeycomb, another dome. I'm working on a material that creates a spiral electric arc, for example around a cable. The effect without Niagara. Nothing complicated, I have already demonstrated much of this in other materials

writing it down just so I don't forget
thinking I should probably (at least in the near term) limit the scope of what I make to a genre I could call
"real-time tactics under pressure (RTTUP)"
at least I feel like that's the thing I can still somewhat relate to, and it's doable for an indie dev - unlike e.g. the far more expensive action-adventure games which I still kinda like but probably can't afford to make anytime soon

One thing I see a lot of games do is dark transparent boxes on a blurred background. I think that could work for me too, and tie GUI and game together.
Here is the effect with a bird's eye view of the actual port in the background. The GUI elements are completely inappropriate for this style, which calls for something more abstract — but I think as a general direction, this could work.
The leather texture gives a nice frosted glass effect; not sure I'll keep it.

Crowns Of Chaos spellcasting has wizards forming a group of 6 glyphs, of which there are 13 types. Researching spells reveals the correct order and type of glyph, or you could just try and guess from 4.3m combinations. Sharing spells with allies becomes a valuable strategy. #GameDev

[P] With the S3GA Dreamcast and Nintendo GameCube, the effort wasn't even made. A half-hearted push was made but it was merely embers that quickly died out. "What is a video game?" and the Skinnerbox business model were still in play. They had no idea what what would make however much money, so the shotgun scattershot approach continued to be used. A lot of devs did whatever and hoped for the best. No one knew what would be huge.

Put Bolmn at 100% off for a week on epic and on the first day it’s showing as 16489 have claimed it. I did think it would probably be lower than that. I wonder if any are bots and how many will actually play it #gamedev

[P] I've been researching something on MobyGames as I wanted to make sure my mind wasn't exaggerating. The seventh gen, rhe PS360 era, was more of a genre graveyard than any other. The next worst genre die-out happened with the death of the 3DS, as handhelds had a number of genres they were keeping alive. Every once in a blue moon those genres will turn up in an indie game, but mostly? They're dead, Jim. Ingenuity is dead.

It's clear that my game's GUI theme needs some more thought, so now I'm looking through https://gameuidatabase.com/ for some inspiration. It's a fantastic resource.

After seeing Miyoki's incredible... "hot dog eating skills," Tiffany gets intrigued. Zero jealousy, just pure amused curiosity 😅

Miyoki is a constant source of food/sexual puns thorough the whole game! #indiedev #gamedev #visualnovel -
The dopamine hit of writing three lines of code that improved test suite performance by 40%, holy heck #gamedev

normal C++ code written by a normal person who definitely hasn't been warped into somehow enjoying this language

Having made a few spacesims (Liberation, Cell Sword, Low Earth Orbit Adventures) I've always been intimidated by hardcore spacesims and fancy cockpit setups.
Finally bit the bullet and got a second-hand #HOTAS and bit the other bullet and got #EliteDangerous... kind of underwhelmed by the controls. Very little is intuitive and so many buttons to remember.
Even though I have a lot of room for improvement, I do a pretty good job with my games in hindsight!

In the before-times, it is said that the above-land was a lush and vibrant place, where kitties could freely frolic and hunt for prey, the lights of the night painting a colourful canvas as a backdrop for their midnight mischief.
These sky-projectors, salvaged by the Kitty Corps from now empty bunkers, contain lost fragments of skies untainted by the greed and folly of the two-legs.

also, we really should ban volumetric clouds
they still suck ass
until there's a chance to raymarch them at full res without upscaling/TAA (so perhaps never), they'll continue to look blobular, unstable and porridge-like
the beauty of IRL clouds is in how well-defined their shapes end up being
we often seem to miss the artistic qualities for the simulated ones and it takes us a lot of time to go back to the artistic approach (we're clearly not there yet with clouds)

Play free on your PC's browser: https://zerodutch.itch.io/dawnfall
Two days trying to break Dawnfall on my phone. My hands and fingers found bugs my tests never did, and a mobile version is close now.
How deep have you gotten?

One trillion gems, I mean, one trillion plates of food, one trillion unique instances in Godot, 144fps. Mine, save, load instantly (world is procedurally generated, but once generated, it's unique, all instances remembered). Compute shaders go brrrr 🚀
I've been doing only tool development, so decided to give a few days to new game experiments.

I didn't plan to hide part of the room when I made this, but that's a tool that emerged since then... I like what it adds to the room a lot! #gamedev #mazestalker #indiegame
