#PennedPossibilities 1102: Do you have a strategy for how you approach worldbuilding in your WIP(s)?
My “strategy” might be boring for other writers to hear. For myself, though, it works very similarly to the way I run #TTRPG or #DnD campaigns for my players. I might start with the vague idea of a “continent” or country. I begin with a town, village, or something similar, and then I slowly work my way outwards. It all starts with a single location for me, and then spreads out.

Making your way up to the deck, you spend a moment at the top of the gangplank to take in your surroundings. Inhaling the cool, salty air, you watch as bustling dock workers unload the ship’s cargo while the town of Gilport awaits you, its weathered stone buildings seeming to stand in defiance of time and the elements. Beyond the town and rocky shore is the dense Titanswood and rugged Mirian Mountains, their towering peaks hidden by the gray clouds overhead.
Why are you here?

We nat 20ed through a heist. The DM didn’t know how we were gonna get out, but he forgot he gave us a time reversion. So we got all the loot and in the revised time line we never stole anything. #dnd

art from early 2025 iirc, but i recently reconnected with a couple friends that i briefly did dnd with (with a shitty mean dm LMAO)! this was my character, Cormizt (drow sorceror, shadow magic or watever its called), my one friend played Nyzmyr (drow ranger, i forget subclass rn), and they were childhood friends! quite yaoiful! except for the fact Cormizt was dating another guy, Iymril (toxic and manipulative but Cormizt never realized), since they were teens. and were engaged for quite some time! theyre all equivalent to their early to mid 20s present day, aka over 200 years old
anyways in the heat of an intense moment, Nyzmyr accidentally killed Iymril while defending Cormizt, so now theyve run away from their home... also Nyzmyr has always crushed on / loved Cormizt but never said it, we have plans for them to slowly get together .. the yaoi will begin eventually story wise...
my friend realized dnd makes him too anxious, so theyll just be ocs we develop and draw etc from now on! which works well w me (:
(Cormizt and Nyzmyr are trans men, Iymril cis man. All use he/him and are gay!)

Quote from D&D today, after finding some members in a large dark room filled with 'barrels covered in sticky-sweet mixture, with the scent of sulfur in the air'
My character is panicking a little bit, which the DM characterizes as "Eslanna seems concerned with the transition from biology to physics"

This morning, in the middle of a cul-de-sac, my dog walked a tight circle around me while shitting like some sort of deranged fecalmancer and now I have to write a new class for dungeons and dragons.

Imagine Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy without the restrictions.
A journey from grit to gladness.
Horror to Hope. Fear to Love. Trauma to Healing.
First, ya gotta meet the demons in the dark. 😈
