Couple of distinct events but interesting related from the past week.
I played World of Warcraft after a 10+ year hiatus and I was put "out of sorts" to find out that encounters are now adjusted to your level. I could go to Northrend at level 13 and there were a bunch of level 13 dragons flying around.
@kensanata mentioned he ran a game of traveller where the players attempted an assault on a heavily guarded ship.
My weekly game, last week, stopped just before the group decided to enter a hermit's cave that contains a deadly monster.
And it got me to thinking about, "What is fair?".
There could easily be a level 20 dragon in the cave. Or just a mad old hermit who makes loud noises to scare the locals.
On the one hand, I think there is an expectation that the referee is going to put a level appropriate encounter in front of the players, but on the other hand, that is really, really boring.
If you are level 13 and everything you face is level 13, what is the point? It is either scaled so you are just going to barely win every fight, or you had bad rolls and so... you died from chance.
Goes back to battles as a sport, versus battles as unrestricted warfare.

One player could not show up for last nights game, so I busted out the old 1978 Top Secret and we rolled up some characters to go on a one shot mission.
It has been a long long time since I ran Top Secret. It takes a while to roll up a character. There are a 6 attributes and then there are 6 secondary attributes, and then 3 tertiary attributes which require calculations.
I noticed that rolling up the stats follows the same formula as Boot Hill (or pretty close).
You roll 1d100 and you get adjustments the lower you roll so it balances out a bit.
01-25 +25
26-50 +15
51-70 +10
71-90 +5
91-00 +0I wrote in my defunct blog, that there was a time in the 80s, when it seemed like most RPGs that came out used 1d100.
We got to play a little bit. There was a base on an island. The agents got dropped in at midnight. There was a lone guard in a tower, but the guard was goofing off on his phone and not paying attention, so they just snuck past him and took a service elevator down into the lower level.
We ran out of time, but everyone enjoyed the sense of "we know our objective" that comes from being an agent of an organization.
That is something that is usually not in a D&D like game.
