Went to a free workshop about emergency preparedness. While it was for disabled people and their carers and organisations caring for them it was suitable for everyone. Think about what you need every day and how would you meet these needs in a disruption https://collaborating4inclusion.org/ #EmergencyPreparedness

Re-reading "#UtopianSocialism - Its History Since 1800" by #LeoLoubere (published in 1974). In particular, chapter 6, which deals with "experimental communities" and why they fail -- citing #Capitalism, lack of practical knowledge, and how cooperation and #MutualAid were needed for communities to survive. And also how defense (against others, protecting crops, etc.), and leaders who aren't forceful are also necessary.
Ahhhh. And some truly lighter reading. The last printed issue of the Farmer's Almanac (in print since 1818). I will miss their tips and tricks as well as topics like natural pest control, #Hygge, herbs of the month, how to make #Switchel, and #Gardening tips. I noticed they also acknowledged #ClimateChange and #WeatherExtremes, and highlighted #EmergencyPreparedness.

I spent some time deep diving "emergency/disaster preparedness in case of war" and basically the only advice I was able to find in books and online was: "don't be where there is war - GTFO".

This old interview came up and Luna says something I have observed about Albania as well. If USians aren't moving fast enough with a successful strategy to restore democracy, USians will have to become more DIY in emergencies as well.

High winds and heavy rain can bring down tree limbs or whole trees. This was the case last night near a Southern California Edison (SCE) substation, leading to an unplanned outage affecting about 15,000 Conejo Valley customers, with many losing grid power for an hour or more. Here is SCE’s report:
“On February 10 at 2055 hours, a 30-second electrical disruption affecting approximately 15,000 customers in Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village occurred when eleven 16kV circuits out of Potrero Substation relayed and reclosed. At 2132 hours, a portion of the substation was interrupted. Preliminary reports indicate tree branches contacted substation equipment. Most customers were restored at 2254 hours and all power was restored at 2310 hours. There were no reported injuries.”
Another storm is headed our way next week, with rain forecast Sunday through Thursday. SCE has tips on emergency preparedness here: https://www.sce.com/outages-safety/outage-preparedness/outage-tips/emergency-preparedness-kit

Always a good idea, but ESPECIALLY right now, with the grid strained, try to turn things off and save power where you can (while continuing to make sure you have batteries and emergency stuff like phones and other things charged up)

Major snow, #IceStorm to affect more than 150 million people in southern, eastern US
A massive winter storm is set to spread heavy snow and ice across more than two dozen states, threatening travel, power outages and dangerous cold from the South and Plains to the Northeast this weekend.
By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Jan 20, 2026 11:59 AM EST | Updated Jan 22, 2026
"A high-impact winter storm will spread snow and ice across more than two dozen states from #Texas through the #Carolinas and #Maine from Friday through the weekend. The amount and extent of snow and ice could cut power and disrupt travel for days, increasing the risk to lives and property.
" 'Potentially hundreds of thousands of people may go without electricity and heat for days,' AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said.
"So much snow and sleet may occur that roads could become clogged in areas ill-equipped to handle even a light coating of snow, let alone several inches, from #Texas and #Oklahoma to the #MississippiValley. Schools and child-care centers may be closed for days.
"In areas where a thick glaze of ice forms, scores of trees and power lines may come down, and removing ice from streets, highways, parking lots and sidewalks may be difficult or impossible, especially where ice-melting supplies are limited. Utility crews could be overwhelmed by the scope of the storm. "

Millions brace for potentially catastrophic #IceStorm. What to know, by the numbers
Millions of Americans are bracing for a potentially catastrophic ice storm from #NewMexico to the #Carolinas
ByJEFF MARTIN Associated Press
January 22, 2026ATLANTA -- "Millions of Americans from New Mexico to the Carolinas are bracing for a potentially catastrophic ice storm that could crush trees and power lines and knock out power for days, while many northern states all the way to New England could see enough snow to make travel nearly impossible, forecasters say.
"An estimated 100 million people were under some type of winter weather watch, warning or advisory on Wednesday ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service said.
"The storm, expected to begin Friday and continue through the weekend, is also projected to bring heavy snow and all types of wintry precipitation, including freezing rain and sleet. An atmospheric river of moisture could be in place by the weekend, pulling precipitation across #Texas and other states along the #GulfCoast and continuing across #Georgia and the Carolinas, forecasters said.
"Here's a look at the approaching storm and how people are preparing for it, by the numbers:
"The number of snowplows owned by the city of Jackson, #Mississippi, where a mix of ice and sleet is possible this weekend. The city uses other heavy machinery like skid steers and small excavators to clear roads, said James Caldwell, deputy director of public works. Jackson also has three trucks that carry salt and sand to spread across roads before freezing weather.
"The amount of ice — half an inch, or 1.27 centimeters — that can lead to a crippling ice storm, toppling trees and power lines to create widespread and long-lasting power outages. The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service warn of the potential for a half-inch of ice or more for many areas, including parts of #Arkansas, #Louisiana, #Alabama, and #Tennessee."

To that end, remember that Signal can handle up to 50 people on a group call so that could be a tool you could use. Not sure how to handle accessibility like captioning on that, though. Perhaps @signalapp will chime in.
We have tended to equate online education/work tools to videoconferencing (even to a single app - Zoom). But remember that online education and more does not have to be synchronous, does not have to feature video. It just needs to be accessible, protect privacy, and allow people to communicate with each other, and perhaps post still images. If you have accessible (or accessible-ish) tools you like, feel free to add them in the replies.

Using online schooling due to ICE domestic terror also raises the point that it's important that online education/videoconference/event tools have robust privacy protections. We weren't thinking of this enough during the early pandemic, but it's clear if the white US citizen students are attending school in person and only Black/brown/immigrant students are being taught using online tools, the tool becomes a means of further locating and targeting marginalized people.
When selecting online tools and crafting approaches to online school/work/medicine/events, think CAREFULLY about which tools you use. Not just their accessibility, but their privacy protections. Additionally, don't think only of the privacy in the app you're using, but in any offline/written data you're compiling.
We told you in the early pandemic - keep working on your online school/work/medicine/events to improve them. You'll need them.
