A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church, by hand. He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the Old Abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies.
The Old Abbot says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son." He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.
Hours go by and nobody sees the Old Abbot. So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall and wailing.
"We missed the R!
We missed the R!
We missed the bloody R!"His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably.
The young monk asks the old Abbot, "What's wrong, father?"
With a choking voice, the old Abbot replies,
"The word was CELEBRATE!"

The monk sat on the stone floor of the courtyard, with her eyes closed. In her mind, she was pouring fine sand onto the substrate of her consciousness, creating ever so beautiful patterns that it made her smile, but when she opened her eyes, she was not able to recreate what she had seen. Frustration welled up from her stomach through her chest; she let go of the sand and took a deep breath.
Her students were now flooding the courtyard; loud and full of energy, they gathered around her, marveling at her art with all its imperfections, only she could see. They were soon silent, rapt by their own work, and as she walked the courtyard and realized how far they all had come with their beautiful, imperfect creations, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders and craved the coarse feeling of sand in her hands once more.

I just read this passage from the #Asian Journal of #ThomasMerton and I love it. [I believe he was quoting from "Ramanuja et la mystique vishnouite" by A.M. Esnoul.]
Merton was an American #Trappist #monk, #writer, #theologian, #mystic, #poet, #SocialActivist and #scholar of #ComparativeReligion. He became deeply interested in #EasternReligions, had been studying them closely for some time, then had a chance to travel to Asia. His Asian Journal is his account of that journey and exploration.
