Well, since I accidentally nuked all of my old images, I guess this is a good time to make a new #introduction post!

Scientists Discover Massive Underwater Ruins That May Be a Lost City of Legend

It's clear developers packed a lot here, with so many side activities available like fishing, raids, crafting, metroidvania-style traversal tools, etc., but nothing really wowed me.
OK, maybe one exception would be this fight with Io, where I had to switch stances to match the enemy, and the boss used different attacks based on the stance it was in. That was very cool. If only combat encounters were this engaging throughout the rest of the game!

Finished Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
It was fine, if mediocre in many aspects. The story was a bit of a mess, and the storytelling lacked finesse. Characters were one-dimentional, but charming. Combat was visually impressive, but quite shallow and quickly became stale. Exploration was similarly unremarkable, with many treasures to find, but mostly no challenge required to reach them.

Ys X platinum trophy is finished. Wonderful game. Not quite up to Ys VIII or Ys IX, but I still loved it. The ship exploration and combat was a great addition. If they decide to port Proud Nordics to PS5, I'd gladly play through it again.
Everyone should play Ys.

La nueva época de los juegos de rol, marcado por los japoneses y los JRPG. Se alejarían de los clásicos juegos de rol para dar paso a crear obras más originales y culturales. Si miramos a lo largo de la historia de ambas etiquetas, tanto los WRPG como los JRPG han sido influencidos por clásicos como #D&D mas los japoneses querían salirse de la línea cultural de occidente y así nacieron los juegos de rol por turnos con influencia taoísta, sintoísta y budista.
Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest y Phantasy Star marcaron un antes y un después. Mezclando una clásica ambientación medieval basada en Dragones y Mazmorras, pero mentiendo por debajo su cultura asiática, algo que nadie se ha dado cuenta, ya que todos relacionamos JRPG con "Juegos hechos en Japón y, mayoritariamente, por turnos". Estos RPG hechos en Japón diferían de los juegos de rol occidentales por muchas características, entre ellas, sus monstruos.
Da igual si hablamos de #Pokémon, #Digimon, Shin Megami Tensei, Final Fantasy o #TheLegendofHeroes... la mayoría de los JRPGs influencian sus monstruos e invocaciones por la cultura de dioses y demonios que existen en el taoísmo y el sintoísmo, además de estar muchos basados en Yokais, tal vez nunca os lo habíais percatado, pero no es de casualidad que la mayoría de juegos de rol hechos en Japón tengan en común esta características.
Por otro lado, los JRPGs también hacen mucho incapié en el combate elemental. Sí, es cierto que en los WRPG también existen debilidades elementales. Sin embargo, gracias al taoísmo y la cultura de los 5 elementos, más el tao, en los JRPG es muy importante un sistema de magia (aunque a veces les salga cosas como la magia de #FinalFantasy8 o #FinalFantasy15). Y no es de extrañar que los demonios y dioses más importantes (que pueden venir de otras religiones, pero siguen añadiéndole la influencia taoísta y sintoísta), que suelen ser las invocaciones, representen a un elemento y a su vez éste tenga un significado (como pasa constantemente en Tales of).
Pero de todas formas, independientemente de toda la influencia cultural contenida en cada JRPG, este género se especializó en ser conocido como en juegos de rol por turnos hecho por japoneses, y muchas veces, por tener un sistema de oficios (siendo ese el "rol" del juego), con algunas excepciones de vez en cuando como Tales of o #Ys.Pero... mientras tanto... ¿qué pasaba en occidente?
Estamos en los 90s, los juegos de rol japoneses dominaban el mercado. ¿Qué ocurría en este lado del mundo? La evolución de los CRPG es la respuesta. -
The Legend of Sword and Fairy, abreviado como Sword and Fairy o TLoSaF (vaya, como los #Trails. Mejor decirles así a The Legend of Heroes Trails tres cuartos y 250 caracteres más), es una franquicia que empezó en 1991 por la empresa taiwanesa #Softstar. Una empresa que no conoce ni Dios, o mejor dicho, ni Guan Yu (mejor pararé de hacer esta clase de chistes).
Este estudio, además de desarrollar esta gran IP, tiene otros tantos como #Richman o su segunda IP más grande, #XuanYuanSword, aunque de este podemos hablar en otro hilo.
Por otro lado, también se dedica a publicar juegos de estudios más pequeños que provienen de Taiwán y China, como el reciente juego de terror (bastante recomendable si os gusta #HomeSweetHome), #TheBridgeCurseRoadtoSalvation. Todos estos juegos lo podéis encontrar ya en #Steam desde que la plataforma llegó a China (gracias a ello, más juegos asiáticos se han podido comprar en occidente).Aunque pueda parecer que simplemente creas que es un #FinalFantasy o #DragonQuest chino pensando que cada entrega es un mundo diferente, realmente puede relacionarse más como un Trails o #Ys ya que su historia sí tiene cohesión y correlación con cada título. Sin embargo, ésto fue mucho tiempo después, debido a que realmente en el lanzamiento de Sword and Fairy 2 pensaban en hacer una mundo diferente.
La saga siempre ha tenido un éxito increíble en China. Podríamos decir que es el JRPG chino más famoso de Asia, sino fuera porque existen estudios como #HoYoverse con títulos como #GenshinImpact y #HonkaiImpact3rd, u otros gacha RPGs como #PunishingGrayRaven. Aún así, fuera de la China Continental, la franquicia nunca tuvo buenas ventas (de hecho, la saga siempre se ha sostenido gracias a los chinos, como #SwordArtOnline o #Talesof, que siempre han vendido más en China que en Japón o en el resto del mundo). No fue hasta 2007, con Sword and Fairy 4, cuando volvió a tener relevancia, pero a escasas penas, ni siquiera con una localización mundial.
Su éxito fue tanto en China, que actualmente cuenta con una #Drama chino, con más de 3 temporadas y siguiendo en emisión.

I finally beat Ys IX today. It was an alright game, as far as Ys goes. I remember enjoying Dana a lot more.
It was really really easy. I'm not sure if I even died. I was never really a fan of this current system. I much preferred the Oath style of combat to it. I'd even take bump combat over it.
Oddly, the one thing that continuously bothered me in this game was the lighting. I'm not really sure why, but something about it made the characters feel kind of... flat.

Forgot to share yesterday but I picked up my preorder of Nintendo world championship and ended up getting ys memoire oath in felghana as well and they gave me the ys3 wanders of ys soundtrack with it which was not what I was expecting seeing that the game has been out for a year and I got a different soundtrack when I bought it last year… I also won a figure from some ichiban kuji ! Random thought: There's afaik zero evidence of it, but I wonder how much of the myth of Ys came from the flooding of what we now call Doggerland. If there was a connection it's likely lost in old oral traditions that Europe is kind of infamous for losing a lot of.
