We had this gorgeous #AustralianHobby visit our pine tree. Very cooperative, and gave us plenty of time to take photos.

Then it took off to have a disagreement with the Brown Goshawk that has also been hanging around our place.

Once that had been seen off, it came back and posed some more!

Snakebird on the Dead Limb

This anhinga was trying to dry out on an old dead tree until I wandered by. I managed a few shots before the bird slipped beneath the water and vanished. Anhingas don’t float like most waterbirds — instead, they swim with their bodies submerged and only their heads above the surface, moving through the water with that unmistakably snake‑like look.

I took my students to the Prospect Park Zoo, today, to do some research on mating systems, sexual selection and reproductive strategies. I managed to squeeze an hour of birding in at the park, hoping to catch some straggling migrants. It was pretty quiet, but I did find a lone, late Green Heron in a pool by the Music Pavilion. I saw and heard a few others, and was fooled by a vociferous chipmunk, but didn't get any other photos. Well, some at the zoo, for later.

Shore Birds

As I cut through the jungle foliage, a large leaf of an oil palm swept over my pith helmet. Ahead was a clearing, a beach occupied by hundreds if not thousands of shore birds lounging on sandbars of the shallow water.

Not really, though the part about the shore birds is true. This is a photo taken at Gulfport, Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico.
