Jetzt im August ist es hier stiller in den alten Sträuchern und Bäumen. Doch bleibt man stehen und verweilt, hört man das Rascheln im Unterholz und erlebt das Treiben der Vögel in den Ästen und auf den Grabsteinen.

In comparison with the Western Kingbird, the Eastern is a mix of dark colors and white underpants and chest. They are basically the same size, have similar calls (Eastern is more quiet), and can easily overlap in space in mid states with Western.

Western Kingbirds have shifted into our area in their post-breeding migration. They are being reported at the Nature Center and in some cases at feeders. The muted colors are striking compared to the Eastern.

Chinese Rubythroat

A volunteer day yesterday (working to get back to a regular 2-day a week volunteer to continue toughening up after knee surgery). Made it through, but am really getting tired of that high pressure dome overhead. We reached 46.1℃ (105.1℉ reported) - guess the NWS wants us to know exactly how much we are suffering. The nice thing is that I was able to repair the old field truck's a/c by replacing the low-pressure switch, so made it home w/o baking. Multiple birds, including Summer Tanagers, which should be starting the migration south soon.

Yesterday we hit a high of 41+℃ (106℉). A rough day to work in the gardens. We should have a break today with a high of only 35+℃ (96℉) - wohoo! After that, back into the furnace with a high of 42+℃ (108℉) on Wednesday. Now is the time to be on the trails looking for the beginnings of southern migration.

Kingfisher Caught Its Lunch

This lovely chap caught a fish right in front of us, after hovering for a while.

It seemed pleased with itself, and instead of flying away to feed it to its kids, it ate it.
