  1. #Wales - #RSPB buys 'magical' 96-hectare landscape to reconnect #habitats

by Oscar Edwards, July 11, 2026

"A charity has bought a 96-hectare upland area of Gallt-y-bere in the hope of reconnecting two landscapes that are home to rare habitats and wildlife.
RSPB announced the purchase of the
'vital missing link' located by the banks of the #RiverTywi in #Carmarthenshire.

"The area falls between two separated parts of the bird conservation charity's Gwenffrwd-Dinas nature reserve in the Elenydd, it said.

"The move will allow conservationists to reconnect the fragmented landscape for the first time in 60 years, allowing #wildlife to move across the different areas and build stronger, more diverse and #sustainable #ecosystems."

  3. I had a lovely walk around RSPB Bowers Marsh yesterday, where I saw some expected birds, and a bunch of new species.

When I got there, there was this welcome committee of Starlings.

  5. I had a lovely few hours yesterday morning birding around RSPB Frampton Marsh, including spoonbills, speckled redshank (with sneakily non-red shanks!), black tailed godwits and little ringed plover - as well as teal, shoveler, mallard and tufted ducks.
I usually think of Frampton as a place to go in winter, that’s certainly been changed. I might go back for one of their wader ID courses - the list above was reached in part by taking a *lot* of photos and reviewing them this morning with a couple of fieldguides and merlin to help me… (Yes, I got the spoonbills without help, thank you very much!)
Anyway, go to Frampton, see loads of cool birds (even if you can’t ID some of them on the spot), chat to friendly fellow visitors and the wonderfully welcoming reserve staff & volunteers, spend a couple of quid in the café (I rate the cheese scones), you really won’t regret it!

  6. Evidence from the first year of BNG shows how serious this problem is. Around 86% of planning applications have claimed exemptions, and the de minimis route alone has accounted for more than half of all cases. This means many developments are avoiding their responsibility to contribute to nature, even when they shouldn’t.

  8. It was great to see at least 3 fledglings from the nest being fed from the busy parents, showing them where to get any easy meal when they can fend for themselves.

  9. It really is tough for birds to successfully bring up offspring to adulthood. I don’t think one of the Robin fledglings survived the first night and the second I think perished after the second night. The Blue Tits have done a lot better, and at least 3 young are now fending for themselves no longer needing the parents to feed them. #birdsofmastodon #Nature #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #Birds #NaturePhotography #RSPB #BirdPhotograpy #BTO #Photography

  10. A fledgling being protected by an adult which was trying to get it to move to somewhere safer with more cover. At this stage they are extremely vulnerable. We even saw an adult attacking a Grey Squirrel that was getting too close to it.

  11. We were privileged to see this Robin fledging from the nest in the ivy. It was second one to leave the nest. It was not able to fly and basically jumped onto a twig and clung on. It sat there until one of the adults came with some food.

  12. We’ve had a bird box up for 3 years now, but this is the first time it has actually had birds preparing a nest. The blue tit couple have been very busy moving in. It will be great to follow to see if they are successful
