    Long associated with special places, the folklore that accompanies the UK's reptiles has always exalted them as protectors of 'treasure' and various magical places.

    We stared at each other for a while and after greeting him in Welsh, he gave me one last glance before scurrying away into a dark crevice to guard some ancient hoard.
