It was 50 years ago today ...
The first page from my earliest attempts to record my #nature observations - a visit to #FlatfordMill in #Suffolk, #England. Passive language reflecting school instructions on science writing. Also an overuse of the word "also".

If #Essex is the #FloridaOfEngland then #Norfolk and #Suffolk are the equivalents of North and South #Carolina - maybe not /quite/ as cursed, but still full of right wing religious wingnuts and extremely car dependent (to be fair, I do watch some mechanics from NC on Youtube as they have a lot of good maintenance tips for Euro cars)

Burrow Hill, Boyton, Suffolk. Once an island but linked to the mainland by a causeway, known as The Thrift, at some point in the medieval period. By the early 1500’s the monks at the nearby Butley Priory began building seawalls and reclaiming Butley Marshes and following post-medieval extensions the area is now completely dry mainland. Long history dating back from the Iron Age. A middle Saxon cemetery contains 200 burials. #history #suffolk #landscape

Gardening is not really possible in the drought conditions we are enduring. We are in our fifth heat wave of the summer. It's about time those in power joined up the dots and started to realise the crisis we are facing. #drought #climatecrisis #fossilfuels #ipswich #guerrillagarden #suffolk

"It’s been heath for hundreds of years. It’s not the heath that’s changed, it’s the environment around it. These are not really wildfires, they are often started with human barbecues, cigarette butts or litter, but the key thing is climate change"

‘These are human fires, not wildfires’: Dunwich reflects on the devastation
By Patrick Barkham and Pippa NeillAs residents, nature wardens and experts consider the damage to the heathland and how to restore it, the climate crisis is foremost in their minds

Jumpers for goalposts, fields of dirt....

I can well believe that the playing fields of #Norfolk and #Suffolk are too rock hard to play football on right now.
They are parched and dusty with many threadbare in terms of grass. Falling on them would be like landing on concrete.
Again this is where sport, #ClimateChange and class intersect…
Golf courses and private school pitches are still lush green.

Scratch of the day: local football season postponed due to ‘rock hard’ pitches
By Matthew WeaverDrought and record heat have forced the Norfolk and Suffolk league to move kick-off to the end of August as the ground is deemed too dangerous to play on

Someone got dinged by the #Australian designed #AI #camera on #A12 (Suffolk Constabulary are trialling these) and will get a traffic violation for this..
( #doggo should be in passenger seat on a harness, you can get them which connect via #Isofix - same as for smol humans )
how even do you #drive safely like that, thats 16-20kg of doggo, and won't end well for either driver or hound if things go pear-shaped..
-
Interesting - they didn't lock off the #alleyway nor fill it with #CCTV, just tidied it up and put pretty flowers etc there and the #crime plummeted
I do wonder though if one reason was that the flowers etc need looking after, so there would always middle aged people and seniors in the alleyway - making it far less attractive for people to take or deal drugs there or flytip ( essentially a form of human #sousveillance / #surveillance )

5/5 Dunwich Heath

Nine years ago today, I took my first photo in the English county of Suffolk where for the past nine years most of my work has been based around there. As I said before, I plan on going back to this spot in 2027 for a comparison photoshoot.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my work surrounding this beautiful county. It really means a lot. ❤️

4/5 Dunwich Heath
If you want to know why wildfire has destroyed much of Dunwich Heath, here's clue. This was a fern, here's it's kindling and now it's probably ash.

3/5 Dunwich Heath
Not all of Dunwich Heath is gorse, heather and fern, there are some wooded spots too. Here's where the path goes through a tunnel.

From a few weeks ago before the devastating wild fire. Purple, greens and golds - but the gold mostly means dried out and inflammable.
