  1. Late night bonus from the garden this afternoon, seen hiding in a rose.

Likely to be a Green Immigrant Leaf Weevil (Polydrusus formosus; 🇩🇪 Seidiger Glanzrüssler).

Apparently the "immigrant" part of the name refers to their adaptability & ease of fitting in in new places, not that they're not locally native.

Including 20 mins wandering in the river meadows at the Fischkinderstube.

This lovely beast with fluffy antennae is a non-biting midge, family Chironomidae. Possibly genus Glytotendipes – hoping for guidance from iNat experts.

Update on this pretty brown fly I saw earlier today.

Thanks to experts on iNaturalist, it turns out not to be the rare Dexia rustica after all 🙁

Rather, it’s much more likely to be the extremely rare Dexia vacua instead 😵‍💫

Fewer than 10 sightings on iNaturalist in Germany and only ~60 across the whole of Europe.

So rare that it was thought to be almost extinct 😬

Not around Heidelberg, it would seem 🙂✌️

  33. RE: mastodon.social/@markmccaughre

  36. Some late evening sunshine, allowing me to spot this little fly from the glint of his silvery "nose" (really the frons).

It's a male in genus Metopia, satellite flies. Possibly M. argyrocephala (a name encoding the silver on the head), but iNaturalist tachnid experts say Metopia is hard to ID definitively from photos.

  41. Finally for now, a familiar friend: a Yellow-fronted Soft-winged flower beetle (Clanoptilus elegans; 🇩🇪 Gelbstirniger Warzenkäfer).

Certainly not my best macro shots, but I like the graphical nature of them.

Especially the first, which feels like an ad for a tech company that's trying too hard to show that it's *striving*.

  46. And just to show that not all arthropods are as obliging to the humble photographer, this little beetle was determined to run & hide every time I tried to take its portrait.

Fortunately, its 1970s hot rod colour scheme is very distinctive – it's a soft-winged flower beetle (Anthocomus fasciatus; 🇩🇪 Gebänderter Warzenkäfer).
