And finally another wee bug I haven't seen for a while – it's a red-winged groundbug (Pterotmetus staphyliniformis; 🇩🇪 Kurzflüglerartige Bodenwanze).
The one with the red wing cases is an adult – the darker one is a nymph, not yet able to fly. There were many of the latter scurrying around the plants.

It's a female & thus lacks the large curled genitals at the end of the abdomen that males have, & which can be used to ID the species.

And finally for now, a twenty-two spot ladybird (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata; 🇩🇪 Zweiundzwanzigpunkt-Marienkäfer).
I only saw it briefly & the photo isn't great, but I also think I need to fine tune the auto-focus of my F-mount macro lens on this new Z-mount body.

Moving from geopolitics to the microcosm of my garden, a few insects were out in today's initially hot, muggy, & cloudy conditions, followed by brief rain & now sunshine.
This is a broad-headed bug (Camptopus lateralis; 🇩🇪 Sichelbein), mostly confined to this latitude in Europe & southwards.

Finally today, a nice little (& I mean little) discovery with very pretty wing & body markings.
I believe that this is a lesser golden knapweed fly (Chaetorellia jaceae). In German it's the ... take a deep breath ... Kleine Wiesenflockenblumen-Bohrfliege.
Lacking the long ovipositor of the female, it's a male.

Another grasshopper, this time on some rosemary.
This one's harder to ID – genus Chorthippus, Eurasian field grasshoppers, but it's very hard to distinguish between C. brunneus, C. biguttulus, & C. mollis without a clear view of the wings ... or decoding their chirps 🦗🎶
Neither was possible in this situation 🤷♂️

Also out there today, many grasshoppers well camouflaged & jumping around in the parched landscape.
Here's one that found some greenery though – it's a rufous grasshopper (Gomphocerippus rufus; 🇩🇪 Rote Keulenschrecke), easily identified from the flattened club-like tips to the antennae.

Sometimes I think my garden arthropods are taking the piss 🙄
I chased this big tachnid fly around for ages, trying to get a clear shot. Then it landed on my calf & started drinking the sweat – not easy to photograph 😬
It's a male black & orange parasite fly (Nowickia ferox; 🇩🇪 Große Borsten-Raupenfliege).

While ID'ing that damselfly was tricky, as the teneral stage doesn't much resemble the blue & black adult colour scheme with red eyes, this one is more straightforward.
It's a blue-tailed damselfly (Ischnura elegans; Große Pechlibelle), also at the Fischkinderstube.

As seen at the Fischkinderstube pond during yesterday's ride.
I believe it's a small red-eyed damselfly (Erythromma viridulum; 🇩🇪 Kleines Granatauge) in the teneral stage, meaning just emerged from being a nymph. The characteristic strong colours come later.
It was surprisingly reluctant to fly off my fingers 🤷♂️

It's likely a pearl veneer (Agriphila straminella; 🇩🇪 Unscheinbarer Graszünsler), & the combination of blue-grey eyes & fluffy snout is quite something.
This one is native to Europe & the Palearctic.

I did see one of my favourites however – a buffalo treehopper (Stictocephala bisonia; 🇩🇪 Büffelzikade), & will try to get a head-on shot showing where the name comes from.
That said, it's an invasive species from North America, now widespread in Europe.

Another rather depressing hour in the garden looking for arthropods – it has been hot & sunny for so long now, everything's parched & many plants have died.
But at least there are western honey bees (Apis mellifera; 🇩🇪 Westliche Honigbiene) out there being industrious.

I'm often in two minds when photographing flies – while some are readily identified at the species level, others remain enigmatic unless you dissect their genitals, & that's just for males 😳
Case in point – this is likely a female Carnaria-group flesh fly in subgenus Sarcophaga, but being more definitive is tough 😬✌️

The learning curve for my new mirrorless Nikon is proving steep, especially for macrophotography. Not helped by the hot weather, making it difficult to practice.
Still, here's a small bee feeding on the lavender – best guess is a cucumber carpenter bee (Ceratina cucurbitina; 🇩🇪 Schwarzglänzende Keulhornbiene).

Very parched out there & just a few arthropods, including these small butterflies: the first is a holly blue (Celestrina argiolus; 🇩🇪 Faulbaumbläuling) & the second a female common blue (Polyommatus icarus; 🇩🇪 Hauhechel-Bläuling).

The Jersey Tiger Moth used to be a real rarity, mostly confined to the Channel Islands and parts of Devon. Over the last 15–20 years it has spread rapidly across southern England, and sightings in Cambridgeshire (where I saw this one) are now increasingly normal in July–September.

Apart from the bees & flies in the lavender, the garden was surprisingly quiet this evening, so I struggled to find subjects for my new camera.
This very small ant obliged though – it's genus Temnothorax, likely T. affinis, the Baum-Schmalbrustameise in German.

It's 21 July, the Eagle has landed, & I've taken my new camera for its first walk in the garden.
The Nikon Z6 III is a fearsomely capable beast & I've barely started to set it up, but here are some first shots with the 24-200mm lens.
A large carpenter bee (genus Xylocopa) & a goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia).
