  1. As we move into September, the sun is setting over the valley ever earlier, with this red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta; 🇩🇪 Admiral) spreading its wings to catch the final warmth.

I've been seeing them for the last six months & they're be among the last to go into hibernation as winter comes.

  2. The medium-sized bee fly has the rather dubious official scientific name of Villa hottentotta, or Hottentotten-Fliege in 🇩🇪

Less offensive alternatives are its earlier name of Villa suprema, although another option, Anthrax flava, has its problems too.

As seen at ESA's European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt today.

  3. Yesterday was almost a bust, arthropod-wise. It was warm & windy, making it hard to photograph anything.

    So I gave up.

    Then this beauty landed nearby.

It's a French red underwing moth (Calocata elocata; 🇩🇪 Pappelkarmin).

Less common than the red underwing in DE, but the Upper Rhine valley is a hotspot.

  4. Somehow a more tiring ride than it ought to have been – I blame the strong wind, not my excess kilos 😬✌️

Still, 53km done on a day that couldn’t quite make its mind up – still a bit too warm for my taste, but you can smell autumn is just around the corner.

  5. And just to reinforce that wasps come in a huge range of species, shapes, & sizes, here's one of the larger ones currently in our garden – the Mexican grass-carrying wasp (Isodontia mexicana; 🇩🇪 Stahlblaue Grillenjäger), showing off its metallic wings.

Around 20mm in size, not 3mm.

  6. I've seen this wasp hanging around the sweetpeas for the last day. It's tiny, ~3mm, with pretty metallic colours.

It's likely genus Pteromalus & possibly P. puparum, the white butterfly pupal parasitoid wasp, which tells you pretty much all you need to know 😬

Only one prior confirmed sighting in DE on iNat.

  7. Saw this tiny little chalcid (metallic-coloured) wasp this afternoon, but only briefly.

Likely in genus Eupelmus & the hairy, metallic thorax & multi-coloured ovipositor & legs resemble pictures of E. urozonus on GBIF.

But it's very rare, just one prior research grade observation in Germany on iNat, so ... 🤷‍♂️

  8. As a bonus, a brief encounter between a juvenile goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia) & a fig-tree skeletonizer moth (Choreutis nemorana), on opposite sides of a flower arena.

I bet the spider was thinking "yeah, easy", but the moth jumped up on the pistils, drank a bit, then flew off.

  9. Well, I'm bamboozled 🤷‍♂️

This jewel is a Chrysidid wasp in tribe Elampini. But beyond that?

The green-blue & red colour scheme suggests either Hedychrum gerstaeckeri or Holopyga generosa (less likely), but it could be a male Hedychrum nobile, a female of which I saw yesterday.

Will seek help on iNaturalist 🤞

  10. Well.

I wasn't planning on arthropod hunting in today's renewed hot & muggy weather 🥵

But old habits etc., so I went out with just my phone. Saw & snapped this pretty thing, then returned with the big camera.

It's a female feather-legged fly, Trichopoda pictipennis, an invasive species from the Neotropics.

  11. Finally, a potentially rare & endangered bee.

I'm fairly certain this is a sharp-tailed bee in genus Coelioyxs & sub-genus Rozeniana.

Judging from the shape of the end of the abdomen, I think it's a female Coelioxys rufescens – it only has 20 observations on iNat in Germany, 68 worldwide.

    Cool.

  13. Holding back the mystery for a while longer, here's a common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus; 🇩🇪 Hauhechel-Bläuling) feeding from the last of the lavender flowers.

  14. Somewhat clearer, hopefully, is this species of mining bee.

I believe that it's an ivy cellophane bee (Colletes hederae; 🇩🇪 Efeu-Seidenbiene).

We have lots of ivy in the garden & male adults emerge in late August, females in September, so it all adds up.

  15. Second, a female cluster fly in genus Pollenia.

Despite the fairly distinctive golden hairs on the thorax, getting a definitive ID is hard.

Possibly P. rudis, the common cluster fly, which despite its name, isn't very common. Or perhaps P. pediculata, the tufted cluster fly, which is even less common 🤷‍♂️

The new one is in tribe Crambini, the crambid snout moths, so named for their many protruding palps.

It's a sand tailed digger wasp (Cerceris arenaria; 🇩🇪 Sandknotenwespe).

The H. nobile wasps sneak into their nests & lay an egg. It hatches into a larva before the C. arenaria egg – it eats the stored food & destroys the C. arenaria.

In German, it referred to as the Augenstreifen-Schmeißfliege, recognising the coloured horizontal stripes that appear across its compound eyes.

Widespread across Europe, but not that frequent, which might explain why it doesn't have a common name in English or German.
