As we move into September, the sun is setting over the valley ever earlier, with this red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta; 🇩🇪 Admiral) spreading its wings to catch the final warmth.
I've been seeing them for the last six months & they're be among the last to go into hibernation as winter comes.

The medium-sized bee fly has the rather dubious official scientific name of Villa hottentotta, or Hottentotten-Fliege in 🇩🇪
Less offensive alternatives are its earlier name of Villa suprema, although another option, Anthrax flava, has its problems too.
