  1. Some late evening sunshine, allowing me to spot this little fly from the glint of his silvery "nose" (really the frons).

It's a male in genus Metopia, satellite flies. Possibly M. argyrocephala (a name encoding the silver on the head), but iNaturalist tachnid experts say Metopia is hard to ID definitively from photos.

  2. Finally for now, a familiar friend: a Yellow-fronted Soft-winged flower beetle (Clanoptilus elegans; 🇩🇪 Gelbstirniger Warzenkäfer).

Certainly not my best macro shots, but I like the graphical nature of them.

Especially the first, which feels like an ad for a tech company that's trying too hard to show that it's *striving*.

  3. And just to show that not all arthropods are as obliging to the humble photographer, this little beetle was determined to run & hide every time I tried to take its portrait.

Fortunately, its 1970s hot rod colour scheme is very distinctive – it's a soft-winged flower beetle (Anthocomus fasciatus; 🇩🇪 Gebänderter Warzenkäfer).

  4. An intermittently rainy day, so those arthropods that are out are happy just to soak up the sunshine when it appears.

Meaning that I could get some nice shots of this tachnid fly on a watery leaf, making for a decent macro stack.

Not 100% sure, but my best guess is that it's Dexia rustica, a widespread species in Europe, but rare.

  5. And speaking of bugs, I teased this one last week, but forgot to post it.

It's a striped oak bug (Rhabdomoris striatellus; 🇩🇪 Eichen-Schmuckwanze). Similar, but clearly different to its relative, the streaked plant bug (Miris striatus; 🇩🇪 Prachtwanze), as seen in the second picture.

    They're both in tribe Mirini.

  6. Still trying to clear my backlog of arthropods seen at the Tagungsstätte Löwenstein last week, but many are proving hard to ID.

But I'll venture that this is a nymph of the spotted plant bug (Closterotomus fulvomaculatus; 🇩🇪 Braune Schmuckwanze).

As the German name suggests, it's much less pretty as an adult 🤷‍♂️

  7. And since I'm sure you're now curious, why yes, there is also a large yellow-girdled tenthredo (Tenthredo maculata; 🇩🇪 Große Gelbbinden-Blattwespe) 🙂

Also photographed at Löwenstein last week.

  8. Turning to a black & yellow insect that is hopefully easier to ID definitively for once, this is a sawfly also seen at Löwenstein last week.

I'm pretty sure it's a female small yellow-girdled tenthredo (Tenthredo temula; 🇩🇪 Berauschte Blattwespe).

Fingers crossed that the iNaturalist experts agree – it's brutal in there 😬

  9. To further demonstrate how hard it can be, here's another black & yellow hoverfly seen at Löwenstein last week.

Superficially similar, this is a Chrysotoxum, another genus of hoverfly.

But which species? The bars aren't hooked at the ends, so I'd favour C. vernale over C. festivum, but C. elegans is also an option.

  10. Identifying hoverflies can be very tricky too.

This boldly-coloured one is very likely genus Xanthogramma, now renamed Philhelius.

Based on the dark wing patches, the yellow bar shapes, & frequency, I'd say P. pedissequum, the delightfully-named Superb Ant-hill Hoverfly.

But also perhaps P. dives or P. stackelbergi?

  11. Say "wasp" & most people think only of those in genus Vespula, the yellow & black ones that are a nuisance around your jam sandwich.

But there are many others, including the 25,000 known species in family Ichneumonidae.

    Of which this is one.

    Perhaps tribe Exenterini.

    Maybe.

    Like I said: 25,000 known species 😬

  12. Finally, not rare, but the first I've seen in my garden, after a sighting on the Königstuhl last week.

A black-and-red froghopper (Cercopis vulnerata; 🇩🇪 Gemeine Blutzikade).

A reminder that froghoppers can release their pre-tensioned leg muscles to jump in just one millisecond, & experience accelerations of over 400g 😬✌️

  13. While I was photographing that fly, this small tortrix moth landed on another sage leaf.

From the distinctive stripes across the wings, it's likely genus Grapholita, but which exactly?

Almost all seen in Germany on iNat are G. compositella, but that has four stripes.

Perhaps G. coronillana or G. discretana? Both rare.

  14. Well – something potentially very rare in the garden this evening 😱

Visually at least, by far the best fit is genus Dryodromia, part of the dagger fly family.

A genus with just two species: D. testacea in Europe, D. yunnanica in China.

    D. testacea only has ten observations on iNaturalist to date.

    Is this the eleventh? 😬

  15. Also braving the colder, windier conditions today, this small, colourful, long-legged fly.

  16. Little sunshine on this cold-ish afternoon, but enough to bring out some arthropods.

Including a bunch of these small bees, chasing each other at low-level over the foliage, then resting.

I think they're genus Andrena & if pushed for a species, I'd venture male A. flavipes (Yellow-legged mining bee; 🇩🇪 Gemeine Sandbiene).

  17. A rainy day, so not much happening in the garden 🤷‍♂️

But here's something amusing from yesterday – this is very probably a privet leafhopper (Fieberiella florii; 🇩🇪 Ligusterstrauchzirpe), which has wedged itself upside down into a leaf node to eat 🙃

  18. A warm, sunny 64km afternoon ride & my first damselflies of the year at the Fischkinderstube pond.

They were flighty & hard to get nice pix of with my phone, but good enough for IDs, I think.

First is a female blue featherleg (Platycnemis pennipes), & the other is a blue-tailed damselfly (Ischnura elegans).

This time, however, a pair of them caught in flagrante delicto 😳

  20. Another set of very poor pictures taken of another very rapidly moving insect 😬

But fortunately, the black, white, & red colour scheme is distinctive enough even when out of focus, leading to a fairly certain ID.

  21. I only saw this one briefly, hence the poor pictures 🤷‍♂️

But after going down some rabbit holes, a good guess is that it's a torpedo sawfly (Nematus lucidus; 🇩🇪 Torpedo-Blattwespe), not an ichneumonid wasp as iNaturalist initially suggested 😬

Not that frequently documented on that site, but not rare or endangered either.

Unlike the people that named it in English – it's called the wasp beetle (Clytus arietis; 🇩🇪 Echter Widderbock) 🤷‍♂️

During a visit to #MINWR /#Merritt #Island National #Wildlife Refuge, Fox (the #photographer) noticed some #bees crawling over a #thistle #flower and each other. While composing the shot, a #julia #butterlyfly landed on the flower. It stayed there for exactly one frame before taking off again, apparently deciding the place was too crowded.
