  1. Wow! I just saw a Steller's Jay on my deck. Merlin Bird ID says it's unlikely to be seen here. I wonder if it's come out of the forest because of the smoke or something to do with climate change? #birdwatching

  2. Look at this little cutie! At first I thought it was a finch of some sort, because of its short stubby beak. But it’s a Southern Whiteface, my first sighting. Listed as vulnerable, facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. sydneybirder.com/2026/08/20/so #birds #australia #birdwatching

  3. Dove and Stone

In the mornings, when I open the back door to let my dog Charlie out, a dozen or more mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) — along with various other birds — scatter from the ground and lift into the trees. They’re always out there ahead of me, quietly foraging until the door swings open and Charlie trots into their world.

This particular dove was poking through the grass near a white stone, pausing just long enough for me to catch the moment.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

  4. Good morning! The hummingbirds are still frequent visitors to the feeder. They enjoy sitting on a zip tie to rest, too. #birdwatching #photography

  5. What Makes A Good Bird Photo?
There's more to bird photography than just capturing the subject in perfect detail and maximum sharpness - and it's not about the gear, either.

Although I've only been photographing birds for just over a year, I've come to realise that 'bird photography' is more about actual photography, about composition and lighting - than simply visually cat
