  2. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

    29 September 2025

Charlie and I just returned from our Monday Walk. Before we left, I wrote a paragraph about feeling conflicted about going—something about how I don’t have the discipline I used to when it comes to that sort of thing. But I hit the wrong key and lost it. It is Monday, after all.

We passed the annual parish fair on our walk. It’s just down the street, humming with its usual mix of funnel cakes and brass band bravado. If you didn’t know, Louisiana has parishes instead of counties—a linguistic relic from our French and Spanish colonial past, both deeply Catholic. Back then, parishes marked church jurisdictions. These days, they function just like counties do elsewhere, but the name still carries a bit of ecclesiastical echo.

I have the nagging sense I’m forgetting something today, though I couldn’t tell you what. 🤔 Then again, if I knew what it was, I wouldn’t be forgetting it, would I? Oh well. It’ll come to me—or it won’t. And if it doesn’t, maybe it wasn’t all that important to begin with.

  8. Good morning. 🫖☕😃

    7 October 2025

The weather report I checked this morning said we can expect it to be partly sunny. I found that curious — why not partly cloudy? I appreciate the glass-half-full sentiment, though. Technically, the sun is always present, albeit sometimes obscured from our direct view by clouds or by the Earth itself. Clouds, however, come and go, so partly cloudy feels more accurate. Or is it more correct? I tried correcter, but it got the dreaded red squiggly underline. So yes — more correct is correct. Now that I’ve corrected that, I can move on.

The sun has always been and always will be. Well, like all things, it will eventually go away — but not within our wee little lifetimes, which are but a fraction of a second in the grand scheme of things. As far as humans go — or life on Earth, for that matter — the sun has always been. To be sure, Earth will cease to exist long before the sun does. Scientists predict that Earth will likely be snuffed out by the sun when it becomes a red giant in a mere 5 billion years or so.

Yes, it’s likely that humans won’t always be — but they will always be in our lifetimes 😜. I read a headline this morning about the discovery of a 57,000-year-old artifact. The headline claimed the object, which bore carvings, wasn’t created by humans. But when I read further, I discovered the carvings were made by Neanderthal people — which gave me pause 🤔. Wait a minute, weren’t Homo neanderthalensis human? Homo means “man,” you know.

Oh no! I’m running out of space and need to wrap this up. Homo neanderthalensis were human, just like Homo sapiens — different species, yes, but they interbred. So were they really that different, way back when?

    9 May 2026

We’d been on the road all day, and now we’re tucked into northern Arkansas, deep in the Ozark Mountains. After we arrived, we went out to dinner with my daughter and granddaughters. Then they headed off to do a little shopping for the upcoming graduation party. I think I mentioned a few days ago that one of my granddaughters is graduating from college this month. She’ll be teaching kindergarten in North Little Rock once she’s officially done.

The drive itself was pretty uneventful. Most of it was interstate, and my modern car handled the bulk of the work with its hands‑free driving feature. I still had to sit there and keep an eye on things, of course — take over when the car insisted, tell it when to change lanes, and handle the turns. The thing can be a little sassy. Once we left the interstate, it was back to doing everything myself.

Somewhere along the way, I started thinking about how far things have come since I was a young man. My cars back then didn’t have power steering or A/C — unless you count that little triangular vent window you could angle so the wind hit you in the face. And for heaven’s sake, I had to roll the windows up and down with a hand crank. Don’t even get me started on navigation.

Anyway, that’s enough for today. Time to kick back.

  14. Good morning. 🍄🍄🍄

    3 May 2026

I just finished my latest read, Strip Tease by Carl Hiaasen. I find his books hilarious, and this one is no exception. Like all his stories, it’s rooted firmly in Florida. The main character, Erin Grant, is a former FBI secretary who loses her job after her ex‑husband — a perpetually drugged, wheelchair‑stealing mess — gets arrested. To support herself and her daughter, she takes a job dancing at a gentleman’s club.

One night, a drunken congressman, David Dilbeck, jumps onstage and starts beating a customer with a champagne bottle. That single moment sets off a chain reaction of blackmail threats, murder, and a parade of slippery, bumbling criminals and political fixers. Meanwhile, Erin’s inept, scheming ex‑husband is determined to keep custody of their daughter, despite being the last person who should.

Overall, I thought the book was a lot of fun.
