From March 2026...
Could #Maine make polluters pay for the cost of #climateChange ? Lawmakers want to study it first.
The Legislature on Tuesday passed a measure to study how much greenhouse gas emissions are costing the state, with Republicans opposed.
by Rachel Ohm, March 31, 2026
"Maine lawmakers Tuesday took a possible step toward establishing a program to recoup money from large, corporate polluters to pay for the impacts of climate change.
"The House of Representatives passed a bill that would study how much greenhouse gas emissions have cost the state in a 75-72 vote that fell largely along party lines. Two Democrats, Tiffany Roberts of South Berwick and Holly Sargent of York, joined with Republicans in opposition.
"The Senate passed the bill 19-13 earlier in the week with Democrats in support and Republicans opposed.
"The bill, LD 1870, sponsored by Sen. Stacy Brenner, D-Scarborough, started out as a proposal for a so-called #ClimateSuperfund that would collect fees from groups that extract #FossilFuels and refine crude oil and whose activities are found to contribute to certain levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The money would be used to fund climate change adaptation projects.
The version that was voted on this week, however, was revised to a proposal for a study of the cost to the state of greenhouse gas emissions from 1995 to 2024. The information is set to be submitted to lawmakers in a report due by Jan. 1, 2028."Archived version:

There was some coverage of the #PortlandME No Immunity for #BigOil rally today. Hubby is sending me a gift article link later tonight, but here's a photo from today's march... You can see my sign in the far left corner.

The #PortlandME No Immunity for #BigOil rally was small, but powerful! We chanted and marched from #UselessSusanCollins office to #AngusKing 's office to #ChelliePingree 's office. Only Chellie committed to making Big Oil pay. I did NOT volunteer to go into Susan Collins' office, as I'm still on her shit-list. Met some good folks from #ThirdAct and #NRCM . It seems I was the only #MaineDSA member there, but that's okay -- a rally should have at least one card-carrying #Socialist! My hand-painted signs were a big hit. Someone asked if I hand painted #NoJobsOnADeadPlanet one. "Yup! No AI involved!" to which everyone laughed. I'm glad I went. I've been burnt out from protesting, so it was good to get my activist batteries recharged hanging out with good people!

No Immunity for #BigOil Rallies!
"While making record profits, Big Oil and their allies in Congress are trying to get off the hook from paying for damages caused by their pollution by passing sweeping immunity legislation to protect their #corporate interests. Let's be clear: if you make a mess, you clean it up. #Maine taxpayers have been stuck paying for climate damages with no support from the corporations that caused the problem, and that isn't right.
