Imagine a group of human beings being trapped in a confined place, unable to escape or return to a normal life, while violence is inflicted upon them day after day for two and a half years.

Imagine death becoming part of their daily lives. Imagine losing loved ones before their eyes, children waking to fear instead of safety, homes becoming memories, schools becoming postponed dreams, and hospitals becoming places where there are simply not enough resources to save everyone.

Then add hunger.

Imagine a mother searching for a piece of food to quiet her children’s hunger, but finding none. Imagine water becoming a wish, medicine becoming a luxury, and bread becoming something counted piece by piece. Imagine living every day without knowing whether what you have today will last until tomorrow.

And the cruelest part of all?

For two and a half years, these people keep raising their voices.

They say: We are suffering.
We are hungry.
Our children are afraid.
Our sick need medicine.
Please, stop this suffering.
Please, help us.

And the world hears them.

It sees their photographs.
It reads their words.
It watches their tears.
It knows they are trapped, hungry, frightened, and that they did not choose this life.

And yet… the days pass.

Then the months.

Then one year… then two… and another year draws closer to its end.

And one question remains suspended in the air:

What happens to a human being when violence and hunger do not only destroy their body, but slowly consume their heart as they cry out for help and find no one reaching back?

There is a kind of pain that wounds cannot describe, a kind of hunger that numbers cannot measure, and a kind of loss that words can never repair.

And there is something even more devastating than suffering alone:

Suffering in full view of the world, knowing the world sees your pain, and then watching the world become accustomed to your cries.

After two and a half years, we are not asking to be seen as numbers, nor for our suffering to become another passing headline.

We only ask the world to remember that behind every number is a human being who once had a home, a face they loved, a child with dreams, a mother waiting for their return, and a life they deserved to live in safety.

Today, I took my mother to her monthly medical check-up, an appointment we have always tried to keep. But I couldn’t afford the cost because debt continues to surround us from every side. Today, what we owe has reached $225, even before covering the food and basic necessities I mentioned before.

The doctor told us that the cyst on my mother’s ovary has shrunk by 1 cm, but it is still there, so she needs to restart her treatment and continue taking her medication. 💔 This means more costs we simply cannot afford while debt continues to weigh heavily on us.

If there is a kind person, organization, or anyone who can help us pay off this debt and provide my mother’s medication and our food, your help would be an enormous relief after all we have endured. 🙏❤️‍🩹

All we wish for is to reach her birthday without debt, without fear, and without wondering how we will afford our next meal. We just want one day that feels like a celebration, not another day of sorrow… a day when we can feel that we are living, rather than simply struggling to survive. 🍉

Five days from now is her birthday.

I wish, just once, I could give her something that truly reflects what she has given us throughout my entire life—even long before the genocide began.

My mother has always been our shelter. She stayed awake so we could feel safe. She exhausted herself so we could rest. She gave us the best she had, often hiding her own pain behind a smile filled with love and contentment. Her eyes always carried the words we needed most: “I’m here. Don’t be afraid. We will get through this.”

Through years of hardship, fear, displacement, and loss, she kept giving us strength when she had every reason to need strength herself.

And now, as her birthday approaches, I keep asking myself: What can I possibly give the woman who has given me everything?

I have no beautiful gift to wrap. No special celebration to prepare. No safe home where I can gather our family around a birthday cake.

My home has been completely cleared of its rubble… and now there is no home left. The place that once sheltered me and my children has become nothing but a painful emptiness, as if our home had never existed. I saw it yesterday, and oh God… the pain I felt was indescribable. Only those who have experienced losing their home and being displaced can truly understand this kind of pain.
Today, all I want is to build a small tent where my children and I can live, to regain a little safety and dignity, and to be close to my friends and neighbors again instead of living through this exhausting loneliness and displacement.

That morning looked like so many mornings of war… a heavy sky, exhausted faces, and children carrying stories far bigger than their age. 💔

I returned to an UNRWA summer camp, searching for a small piece of the life we lost among the ruins. I was looking for the school that once held our laughter, our dreams, and my two dear friends — Yaqeen and Qamar. 🕊️

They were more than friends. They were my childhood. We sat together in class, shared our little secrets, laughed at simple things, and wrote dreams in our notebooks that we believed would grow with us. 📚✨

I entered the camp carrying a heart full of longing. I searched between the seats, waiting to hear their laughter, waiting to see their smiles again…

But they were not there.

Only two empty chairs remained. Two silent witnesses to a childhood interrupted, to dreams that were never given the chance to bloom. 💔

Outside the camp stood a lonely tent among the destruction. I looked at it and felt the weight of history — a reminder of the stories of the Palestinian Nakba, of families who lost their homes and carried their memories in their hearts. We never imagined that another generation would know this same pain. 🏚️🍉

War does not only destroy buildings. It takes away the small details that make life beautiful: school mornings, friends’ laughter, notebooks filled with dreams, and the people who were supposed to walk beside us into the future.

I carry the memory of Yaqeen and Qamar in my heart — their voices, their smiles, and the dreams they never had the chance to achieve. 🕊️

For the past two days, no real meal has entered our home. We survive only on za’atar because it is the last thing we have left. We try to silence our hunger and make it through another day, but it does not give our bodies the strength we need, nor does it take away the pain of hunger. 💔🥀

I am Layan, and these are not just words — this is my family’s reality as we struggle every day to survive. The suffering did not stop with the lack of food; we were also forced to borrow $115 to buy my mother’s medicine, and the debts and burdens have become far beyond what we can carry. 😢💔

#MedicalFundraiser - help needed for my Mom.

Been busy juggling work/client appointments, Mom's medical appointments, community volunteering tasks & maintaining our gardens. Mom's arthritis has been bad the past week so she's been out of commission. Mom's getting more blood work done tomorrow morning; liver enzymes test. August 4th, we meet with her liver specialist again to go over recent abdominal MRI/discuss her liver disease & possible treatments.
The ophthalmologist office just called about her first cataract surgery. We agreed to use their test evaluation advanced lenses for reduced cost of $600. The hospital fees are covered by Pharmacare but the advanced lens costs aren't. BC Pharmacare only covers basic cataract lenses & Mom needs advanced ones. She will need her 2nd eye done, 3-4 weeks after getting the first - it is same cost of $600.
Dr. Pedago will be doing Mom's cataract surgeries. He's diligent with masking up.

I need some help with public donations to cover the costs of her cataract lenses. I'm taking a week off work, after each of her eye surgeries, to ensure she's safe/recovers well.

for rent due on the 1st of August, also some for food and bills (have given up on clothes).

@DionTheBlackDragon and me are two trans, disabled, neurodivergent abuse survivors, recovering from eating disorders and chronic (in @DionTheBlackDragon 's case lifelong and severely disabling!) malnutrition, trying to get on our own feet but relying on mutual aid until we get there.

Y'all have already helped us through and out of horrible situations, please let's continue this effort until we are thriving and in turn able to pay it forward! We're so close!

We're both already working, albeit still in the early phase of establishing anything. Poverty is holding us back.
