SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — "A new documentary on homelessness in Sioux Falls is airing at the State Theatre next week.

"Proceeds from each showing of 24 Hours on 8th Street will go towards various non-profit organizations including #MidwestStreetMedicine, the #BishopDudleyHospitalityHouse, #SouthDakotaUrbanIndianHealth and others.

"Filmmakers say they originally planned to film for 24 hours but extended the film-making process to a full year after questions led to one plot twist after another.

"The State Theatre is selling tickets for showings on August 24th and 25th."

The Yellow Barrier — A Homeland We Can See, But Cannot Reach 🇵🇸💔

We have a homeland we belong to, yet sometimes it feels farther away than anywhere on Earth.

It is not an imagined homeland, nor merely a story inherited from our grandparents. It is the soil where our dead are buried, the land that carried our parents’ footsteps, the homes where our voices and memories once lived.

Its name was Palestine.
Its name is Palestine.
And its name will remain Palestine. 🇵🇸

But today, a yellow barrier stands between us and it.

Small in size, immense in what it represents. It draws an invisible line and tells us: You may look, but you may not go beyond this point.

Yet even looking no longer brings comfort.

We see no tree to hold onto. No trace of a home we recognize. No window left to testify that we were ever there.

The machinery of destruction did not stop at demolishing homes. It tried to erase something deeper: identity, history, culture, memory—even the dreams we once carried for our children. 🏚️💔

Sometimes I stand there and look at the space this yellow barrier allows me to see.

There is only emptiness where life should have been.

It feels as though I am looking not at a distant land, but at a piece of myself erased before my eyes.

This is where our hearts were buried.
This is where our souls took root.
This is where our sweat fell into the soil. 🌿

The hardest part is not being told, “This place is not yours.”

The hardest part is knowing that it is yours—knowing its names, remembering the homes that once stood there, carrying memories of places that no longer exist, and then standing helplessly before land from which not only have we been separated, but whose visible traces have been deliberately destroyed.

In Gaza, homeland is no longer simply a map.

It has become an absence we look at through a yellow barrier.

And that barrier has become a silent witness to an attempt to separate people from their land, their history, their memory—and even their right to dream of a future. 🕊️

But a barrier cannot change the name of a homeland.

They may destroy homes, erase landmarks, and bury the traces of a civilization. But they cannot erase Palestine from our memory.

They may prevent our feet from reaching it.
They may erase the landscape from before our eyes.
But they cannot uproot that land from within us.

So when I look beyond the yellow barrier, I do not see what remains of a home.

I see what they tried to erase.

And I see a homeland whose name survived the ruins.

It was Palestine.
It is Palestine.
And it will remain Palestine. 🇵🇸🕊️

Thyme, Heavier Than Hunger 🌿💔

In Palestine, thyme needs no introduction. It is the scent of old homes, the memory of quiet mornings, and a small piece of our land that we carry with us wherever we go. 🇵🇸

We used to eat thyme because we loved it.
Today, we eat it because we have little else.

That is the cruel irony: something that once awakened our appetite has become heavy on our stomachs. We eat it today, then again tomorrow, and the day after—not because we want to, but because the only alternative is hunger. 🥖

We spread it on bread, mix it with whatever we have, and try to convince ourselves that the same meal is somehow different. We change its shape, but we know the truth: it is still thyme, and the hunger is still there.

Sometimes I look at the plate and wonder how much our lives have changed.

The question is no longer, “What do we feel like eating today?”
It has become, “What do we still have to eat today?”

We eat thyme so often that even our stomachs begin to resist what our hearts have learned to accept.

And still, we do not abandon it.

Not because it is enough, but because we no longer have the luxury of choice.

There is an old saying: “Plant it in your belly.”
So we plant whatever we can, and keep going.

But sometimes I wonder: what happens when even a memory becomes too heavy for the stomach?

The thyme that once reminded us of our land now reminds us of hunger. 🌿💔

And yet, perhaps that is exactly why we keep eating it. When we cannot hold on to much of Palestine, we hold on to even a spoonful of thyme and tell ourselves that this land still lives inside us.

We eat it so we will not go hungry.
We carry it so we will not forget.

And in both ways, the taste of Palestine remains on our tongues—even when it is mixed with bitterness. 🇵🇸🕊️ https://chuffed.org/project/177144

💔 I am deeply sad, and I constantly find myself exhausted from the weight of all these responsibilities. I am doing everything I can to provide my children with a simple and safe life, but in Gaza, everything has become impossible.
