Australian Researchers Fitted Five Magpies With GPS Trackers To Map Their Movements, But The Birds Began Removing One Another’s Harnesses Within Minutes, Turning A Failed Trial Into An Unexpected Observation Of Cooperation
(When researchers tried to track Australian magpies, the birds turned the tables—systematically removing each other's harnesses and revealing something far more interesting than GPS coordinates.)

[the Aussie magpies need SWAG on their GPS harness!]
“Researchers in Queensland fitted five Australian magpies with tiny GPS trackers, hoping to map their movements and social relationships. The [mischief] had other plans.
Within about ten minutes, an untagged adult female was using her bill to work at the harness on a juvenile. The tracker came off. Nearby, another magpie was helping a second tagged bird on a powerline. Devices that had been designed to stay attached for weeks disappeared within minutes to days.
[The author] like[s] this story partly because it resists the tidy distinction between a successful experiment and a failed one. The researchers lost the movement data they went looking for, but the birds produced an observation nobody had planned…”

“Recent advances in tracking technology have enabled devices such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) loggers to be used on a wide variety of birds. Although there are established ethical considerations to these processes, different species may react differently to particular devices and attachments. Thus, pilot studies are still of utmost importance in this field. Here, [the authors] describe one such study trialling a novel harness design for GPS tracking devices on Australian Magpies Gymnorhina tibicen. Despite previous testing demonstrating the strength and durability of the harness, devices were removed within minutes to hours of initial fitting. Notably, removal was observed to involve one bird snapping another bird’s harness at the only weak point, such that the tracker was released. This behaviour demonstrates both cooperation and a moderate level of problem solving, providing potential further evidence of the cognitive abilities of this species. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the conspecific removal of GPS trackers, and should be considered when planning future tracking studies especially on highly social species…”

  3. ✍️ Logging considerations during production

TYPO3 has several configuration options and tools to keep log files manageable, secure, and relevant. This guide covers practical strategies for controlling log volume, reducing noise, and monitoring critical events.

  4. Three years ago, an illegally constructed #logging bridge across the Highwood River in #Alberta sparked one of the largest grassroots campaigns to protect the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky #Mountains in recent history.

Today, the proposed #clearcut, covering the equivalent of 1,500 soccer fields, is before the Federal Court, and recent #flooding may have changed the clearcut's future.

  6. Restore nature?
    From abundance to degradation
A shifting baseline means it’s hard to see what has been destroyed

"Nature is not doing well in Australia. Many unique mammals, birds and insects are struggling. Entire ecosystems are collapsing"

"The tireless burrowing of millions of bandicoots and bettongs once shaped the grassy woodlands of southeast Australia. But foxes and cats, coupled with logging, farming and mining, have largely put an end to their work as ecosystem engineers."

"The global target is to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems. But Australia hasn’t announced a numerical target...Aiming to restore 30% of degraded land would mean working across private lands, public reserves and the Indigenous estate. It would likely take decades and come with a substantial price tag. Our ballpark figure is a little over A$7 billion a year over 30 years. "

"That’s less than a third of what the federal government spends subsidising activities which damage nature annually." >>

  8. The role of ecological disruption in disease emergence.

    * "Global commodity markets drive deforestation in Australia, one byproduct of which is the spillover of Hendra virus."

"More than one in five bat species globally are under severe threat from human pressures such as habitat loss and degradation, climate change, overexploitation and disease. Their population numbers and collective health, including the constellation of viruses they carry as a group, respond to these disturbances. Australian flying foxes are no different. The emergence of Hendra virus suggested that something had tipped the ecological balance."

A wildlife ecologist believes "that the virus was being driven out by rapid changes in bat ecology, specifically in the loss of trees that traditionally provided them with food."

"In the short history of European settlement in Australia, around half the woodlands and forests have been modified or removed for agriculture or urban development. At the turn of the century, the period when things began to change in the researchers’ accumulated data, Australia’s deforestation rate was the sixth highest in the world."

"It is no coincidence that, of all places, Hendra virus emerged in Queensland. Nowhere else in the country had seen more of its blossoming native trees removed. In some parts of subtropical Australia, more than 95% of their winter foraging area has been destroyed."

"This modified interface between people, horses and bats explain why the disease was being detected with a greater frequency." >>

  9. Clear Cut Logging Can Dramatically Increase Flood Risk

    H/T @Daniel Pierce | Ramshackle Pictures
“Here is a clear and simple breakdown of some of the latest bombshell findings out of the UBC Hydrology Lab… using a probabilistic framework, known as attribution science in the climate world. [The researchers] studied two watersheds in BC's Okanagan Valley near Summerland. In this area, they found that climate change was actually making the frequency of floods go down, but forest harvesting counteracted the effects of climate change and increased the flood risk by 10-fold (!!!) turning a 20-year flood into a flood that occurs every two years. [The H/T] truly want to know how the BC government and timber industry are responding to this new science internally. They're absolutely silent on it in public as they continue business as usual…”

  10. I need to hear your experiences:

How do you keep an overview of all your logfiles and system mail?

Currently, I only use nano and tail to look through them manually, but that's quite a hassle…

  15. Hm. so my post has dissapeared from @fosstodon - pretty weird...

    Anyway, let's try again:
Have you heard about glogg? It’s the best log viewer for Linux, Mac OS and Windows. Why?

It is decent and blazingly fast even with 4 GB files.

Not updated since 2018 and I needed a new feature - wrap lines viewing.

So I forked it and here you go + some further updates based on pull requests:
