  1. @DoomsdaysCW it is 105°F outside. I will not be #spendtimeoutdoors lol. I will be filling up my bath tub with ice

  2. Mini-patio is done! We're going to push the dirt slope back a bit (less of an angle) and then I'll be re-seeding the surrounding area with white clover. My lawn chair and table fit perfectly, as does the smoker/BBQ. Not sure when I'll dare to use the smoker... Maybe this winter? Things have been wicked dry, despite the occasional downpour.

    NEW #RobiePark Playground - #GorhamME

    by Lauren Slivinsky
    August 8, 2026

"The brand-new playground at Robie Park brings something especially exciting to Gorham: a 100% #accessible community playground designed with younger children in mind.

"With a rubberized surface, accessible play equipment, swings, climbing features, imaginative play spaces, and nature-inspired elements, the playground gives kids plenty of different ways to move, explore, and play.

"It’s also an important addition for local families. Robie Park is Gorham’s only non-school playground, giving families with younger children a dedicated community playground they can visit during school hours.

Its location makes it even more useful. The playground sits beside the Gorham Municipal Center and adjacent to #BaxterMemorialLibrary, making it easy to pair playground time with a library visit or storytime.

    Play & Explore

    Playground Equipment

    #AccessiblePlayStructure:
A low, accessible play structure gives younger children opportunities to climb, explore, and play while remaining close to ground level.

    #BermSlide:
The playground’s slide is incorporated into a landscaped berm, creating a fun way for kids to climb up and slide back down while blending the playground into its natural surroundings.

    Swings:
    The swing area includes:

    - Two standard swings
    - Two toddler bucket swings
    - One large web swing

The variety makes it easier for children of different ages and abilities to enjoy swinging together.

    Web Climber:
A large web-style climbing feature gives kids a chance to climb, balance, and test their coordination.

    Ground-Level Merry-Go-Round:
An accessible ground-level merry-go-round adds another opportunity for children to play together.

    Balance Beams:
Low balance elements encourage kids to practice coordination while making their way around the playground.

    Rocking Riders:
Three rocking riders provide another simple play option that’s especially well suited to younger children.

    #ImaginativePlay:
A playhouse and play truck give kids spaces for pretend play beyond the traditional climbing and sliding equipment.

    Seasonal Water Feature:
During the warmer months, kids can cool off with a button-activated water feature incorporated into the playground.

    #NatureInspiredPlay

Natural-inspired elements are incorporated throughout the playground, giving the space a softer feel than a traditional playground while offering additional opportunities for climbing, balancing, and creative play.

    Rest & Refuel

Shade: Limited — plan for sun protection during warmer parts of the day.

Restrooms: Restrooms are available during open hours in the Municipal Building.

Seating: Seating is available around the playground for parents and caregivers.

Water Access: Bring water bottles, especially during warm summer visits."

    Kate McGough, 8/4/2026

"The idea of regularly closing down residential streets for children to play was started in 2009 by a group of parents in Bristol, who wanted to show that 'playing out near home should be normal, it doesn't have to be a special event'. "

  6. #Maine - New section of #EasternTrail opens 15 months early

    by Katie Delaney
    Fri, August 7, 2026

"A new section of the Eastern Trail is now open.

"It's the final link connecting Bug Light in #SouthPortlandME and downtown #SacoME. The 1.6-mile addition to the trail goes through Scarborough and South Portland. Now people can walk, run, and #bike along 16 miles of uninterrupted #OffRoadTrail.

"It's part of the greater #EastCoastGreenway, which goes from #Maine to #Florida.

"Bit by bit, gaps between paths are being filled until it becomes a complete off-road journey along the coast. The new Eastern Trail section is the latest step toward that goal.

"At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, South Portland Mayor Elyse Tipton said it's about more than just connecting trails.

" 'It's about connecting communities and fulfilling a vision that has been years in the making,' she said.

"The project was completed 15 months ahead of schedule.

" 'Which is something frankly just unheard of,' Tom Hall, the town manager of Scarborough, said. 'All the credit in the world goes to this group of folks that got together to really deliver a first-rate project.'

"Avery Seuter, from Wells, was eager to try out the new trail.

" 'First reactions, this is just gorgeous, like you couldn't have picked a better area to come through,' he said, walking along the trail."

    [...]

"The executive director of the #EastCoastGreenwayAlliance said their next goal to get closer to completing the Eastern Trail is to close the gap over the #SacoRiver and down to #KitteryME."

  9. #CommunityGardens in #Ontario Parks That Welcome Everyone

by Andrew Boyd, March 22, 2026

"Picture a garden where pathways welcome #wheelchairs and #walkers with smooth, wide surfaces. Where raised beds bring vibrant tomatoes and fragrant herbs to comfortable heights for everyone. Where sensory experiences of soil, sunshine, and growing things aren’t limited by mobility or ability. That’s the promise of #accessible community gardens in #OntarioParks.

"These thoughtfully designed spaces transform traditional gardening into an inclusive activity where families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities can dig, plant, and harvest side by side. You’ll find gardens with wheelchair-accessible raised beds at shoulder height, tactile plant markers in braille, and gently graded paths that eliminate barriers between you and nature’s therapeutic benefits.

"Ontario’s accessible community gardens aren’t just about physical access—they’re about belonging. They’re neighborhood gathering spots where retired teachers share #composting wisdom with young families, where #AdaptiveTools make planting possible for arthritic hands, and where the simple joy of watching seedlings sprout creates connections across generations and abilities."

"Whether you’re seeking a peaceful outdoor activity, looking to grow your own fresh vegetables, or searching for meaningful community connection, these gardens offer something remarkable: green spaces designed with everyone in mind. From Toronto’s urban plots to gardens nestled in smaller communities, accessible gardening opportunities are blooming across the province, waiting for you to join in. The soil doesn’t judge, and neither do these welcoming spaces—they simply invite you to grow."

Explore current field research projects happening along the trail and out on the #SaltMarsh !

    Thursday, August 6, 2026, 10:00am – 12:00pm
    Cost: Free with Admission

"As visitors to the Wells Reserve explore the natural beauty along the trails, a group of scientists are working in the background to better understand these important #ecosystems. On this guided walk, we will dive deeper into these ongoing research projects to learn about the impacts of invasive plant and crab species, restoration of the endangered New England Cottontail, and participate in hands-on water quality monitoring.

"This program is about 1.75 hours and covers about 1 mile round trip. Much of the walk will be out on the salt marsh so close-toed shoes/boots that can get a little wet or muddy and long pants are recommended. 13. #FalmouthME - All Persons Trail Coming to #GilslandFarm

    by #MaineAudubon Staff
    Media Release, News & Notes · July 17, 2026

"One of the hallmarks of Maine Audubon’s vision is to create accessible, inclusive, and welcoming wildlife sanctuaries that provide a haven for Maine wildlife and broaden access to nature and experiential learning for everyone. Stepping over tree roots, navigating an uneven path, and climbing up a grassy slope: these present unsurmountable obstacles for many people. With that in mind, we are thrilled to report that we have secured funding from the Recreational Trails Program, as well as Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust, Fields Pond Foundation Inc., Athletic Brewing Company Two for the Trails, Martin’s Point Health Care, and other generous donors, which will enable us to construct a 2,075-foot-long All Persons Trail at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center this year. Opening week is scheduled for October 19 through 23; look for more details about the opening coming soon!

"The new trail will begin and end at the Visitor Center parking lot, go through forested areas, and along a boardwalk before emerging into edge habitat and open meadow, with three rest stops and benches. A 275-foot-long spur trail will reach a high vista point in the West Meadow offering views of the #PresumpscotRiver estuary, before looping back through a shaded mixed hardwood forest. Built to U.S. Forest Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines, the trail will be five feet wide (six feet wide along the boardwalk) with a compacted gravel surface and a maximum slope of 5%. The parking lot, which is 105 feet from the trailhead, will have two accessible parking spaces including one which is van accessible.

"We’re excited to report that construction on the trail begins in mid July! We will need to make some adjustments at the sanctuary and ask for your patience as we create this important new feature that will both benefit visitors to Gilsland Farm and better mitigate the long-term impacts of our trail system.

"The trail will follow some of the existing trail network, while other sections of trail will be rerouted and some sections newly created. As such, during this construction phase, visitors should expect to see small sections of the existing trail network located around the Visitor Center temporarily closed. Areas with trail closures will be identified by orange fencing and signage. There may also be days when some parking spots are reserved for construction equipment and these will be marked with orange cones. Access to the West Meadow will remain open during the initial phases of construction, but the routes to get there may shift temporarily. Staff in the Visitor Center will be able to provide up-to-date directions during open hours and signs will help point the way."

  14. So, I spent a LOT of my childhood playing in a "swamp" -- wetlands and woods near my childhood home, which included a #BeaverDam. Part of the area was an abandoned quarry and sandpit owned by Brock Industries. Once the quarry was posted, the area was able to return to its wild state. I was pleased to find out that the area was sold to a #LandTrust, and the old entrance to the sandpit is now the trailhead for the #BrandyBrowForest! I'm hoping something similar can happen with a local sandpit near conservation lands here in Southern Maine. I'm working on it!

Let’s Hike Haverhill - Brandy Brow Forest - Myron's Road Trailhead

"Using funds from the Drinking Water Supply Protection Program, in 2025 the city purchased and protected 41-acres as part of the larger 600-acre Brandy Brow Forest. Shortly after the purchase, the Myron's Rd Trailhead was created.

City of Haverhill DPW Director Bob Ward will guide us through this vast area where the trails are mostly flat. We'll visit a 5-foot tall beaver dam along the way! "

  15. The #CharlesRiver #CommunityGarden in #AllstonMA helped me to cope when I lived in the city. While I didn't have a plot, I still enjoyed the #GreenSpace and it helped ground and calm me. I hope it stays around for many, many more years!

    History of our Garden

"The Charles River Community Garden, #CRCG, was established in 1979/80 by Julie Hensler, who could not find an available plot in the Herter Garden. She contacted the Dept of Food and Agriculture community gardening program and was told there was land further upstream. She rounded up 20 friends and they staked out a 60’ x 40’ garden and turned the soil. It was then divided into 10’ x 20’ plots. Adjacent to the CRCG was the #BostonFoodCoop Small #VictoryGarden. In 1985-86 Julie and her husband took a year off to travel around the world, giving the work of Garden Coordinator to two gardeners who failed to do the job. The garden appeared abandoned and the Dept of Agriculture threatened to terminate the lease. 'Julie called all of the garden members from 1984: many had moved, some had just given up. The list of active gardeners was only about half a dozen people. Everywhere Jule went she tried to convince people to join the garden. Those who joined took 2, 3 or even 4 plots to keep the garden running. The effort was successful, and the garden got approval from the Dept of Agriculture to continue.' In 1996 the two gardens merged under Sue Wymelenberg, who secured funds for the fence and formed the Garden Council. Sue was succeeded by Peter Burns."

  16. ‘Into the Wild’: A meta-synthesis of talking therapy in natural outdoor spaces

This Meta-synthesis highlights the benefits of holding therapy sessions in #nature, which can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance emotional well-being. While outdoor therapy offers unique advantages, such as greater openness and connection with nature, it also requires careful consideration of client suitability and professional training.

    "Summary:

This article explores the benefits of conducting talking therapy in natural outdoor settings, which can reduce stress and improve mood. By integrating therapy with nature, practitioners enhance emotional well-being and encourage open expression. A review of 38 studies involving 322 practitioners and 163 clients outlines best practices and techniques.

Outdoor therapy ranges from using nature as a calming backdrop to actively incorporating the environment into sessions. While challenges like client suitability and professional training exist, the study highlights its growing potential in mental health care. However, a few limitations were identified such as potential distractions, lack of privacy, and lack of control around weather conditions."

  17. ‘The nourishing soil of the soul’: The role of #HorticulturalTherapy in promoting well-being in community-dwelling people with #dementia

#Gardening can help people with dementia feel more active, connected, and less lonely by improving their physical and mental well-being. The article highlights the need for more #Accessible gardening programs in the community to support social engagement and a better quality of life.

    Summary:

"This article explores how gardening and nature-based activities can improve the well-being of people living with dementia, especially those in a long-term care community. Many individuals with dementia experience loneliness and a decline in their ability to engage in daily activities. Gardening offers a way to stay active, connect with nature, and interact with others. Which can help reduce stress, boost mood, and improve both physical and mental health. Despite strong evidence of its benefits in care homes, horticultural therapy is not widely used in community settings.

The authors highlight the need for more opportunities for people with dementia to engage in gardening, as it can promote social connections and a sense of purpose. They argue that making gardens accessible and integrating horticultural therapy into community care programs could significantly improve quality of life. By encouraging outdoor activities, people with dementia may feel more included, confident, and independent in their daily lives."
