  3. So, I've been downloading #GBLTQ resources and historical documents (including #QueerTalk, a radio show on #WMPG hosted by one of my first friends after I moved to #Maine). Why am I doing this? Because I don't trust #Trump and fiends to be in charge of public university archives. I'll be uploading those precious digital records to the @internetarchive soon. So grateful IA are there to be an independent repository of #History and #Culture! 📚 🎧 🎥

  5. Rites of Passage: The #StrawberryCeremony

by Jillian Kerr, May 1, 2025

"Traditionally, the strawberry ceremony is for girls after their first menstrual cycle. However, today it is offered to folks who identify as #TwoSpirit and to those who didn’t have the opportunity to participate as young people, like me. I didn’t have the chance to go through this ceremony decades ago as an adolescent, and I am eagerly looking forward to my own strawberry ceremony experience this year. In anticipation, I researched the strawberry ceremony and talked to those who had already experienced it to learn more.

"Strawberries are highly significant to the #Wabanaki and other Native tribes; as part of the traditional Wabanaki diet before colonization, strawberries are indigenous. Natives used them for general health and to treat various ailments. Because of their shape, many Natives refer to strawberries as the 'heart berry.' The central plant and berry symbolize the mother, and the vines and future plants represent the connection between the Mother, her children, and her grandchildren. Strawberries could not grow without a vast, sprawling root system that connects the plants, like the veins that connect the heart to the rest of the body and sustain life."

  9. Birthday week is winding down. Hubby bought me a grill for smoking food, and my ex-gf sent me a dozen roses. I would never trade the life I'm living now with a closeted one (though I'm not judging those who need to hide who they are). I've never been in the closet, and I'll defend fellow #GBLTQ folks until my last breath! #LoveIsLove!

  11. Federal Judge Blocks #Idaho Law Criminalizing #Transgender Bathroom Use

Six transgender residents claimed that the #BathroomBan, the most restrictive in the nation, violated their constitutional rights.

By Amy Harmon, June 16, 2026

Excerpt: "Twenty states besides Idaho restrict transgender people from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity, according to the #MovementAdvancementProject, which tracks state-level legislation on #LGBTQ issues. But the restrictions elsewhere apply only to schools and colleges, government-owned buildings and public places like parks and airports.

"Idaho’s measure is viewed as the most restrictive such law in the nation because of its broad application and because of the penalties it imposes. Repeat violators face up to five years in prison. The law covers restrooms in all publicly owned buildings as well as privately owned settings such as restaurants, retail stores and business offices. It includes bathrooms with a single stall. Idaho’s law also applies more immediately, including no provision like the one in #Florida that requires a transgender person to refuse to leave a bathroom that does not match their sex at birth in order to establish a violation.

"State officials argue that even if the law is challenging to enforce, it is not unconstitutionally vague because it is clear about what must be proved. They noted that a person’s biological sex could be determined later through objective means, such as a birth certificate or DNA testing, even if it cannot be done at the scene."

  13. Born OTD in 1964 (June 8th)... James "Jamie" Navarro -- a gay rights activist and co-founder of #BAGLY -- The Boston Alliance of #LGBTQ+ Youth. Unfortunately, he passed away at age 50 in 2014 (from complications caused by being at 9/11 and exposed to whatever was in the air). He was one of my dearest friends, and one of the bravest human beings I've known (he was openly gay in the 1980s). I fiercely defended him and still think of him often.

  17. #Trans & #Intersex #History #Africa — Digital Archive

"It is important that we as #African trans, #gender diverse and intersex people speak for ourselves" — #VictorMukasa

"This statement by one of Trans & Intersex History Africa’s (TIHA) founders, Victor Mukasa, speaks to the rationale behind the TIHA digital archive, the history of trans, gender diverse and intersex movements in Africa, and the importance of archiving our histories/herstories/theirstories.

Supporting advocacy and movement building through archiving

We document events and important moments in a digital archive in the form of a visual timeline, as well as audio and video interviews as experienced and remembered by activists on the African Continent and within the #AfricanDiaspora.

As is the case worldwide, the anti-gender, conservative, #TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) rhetoric continues to gain strength and influences government policies, law and public sentiment, which impacts trans, gender diverse and intersex people’s lived realities and their fundamental human rights. We believe that the Trans & Intersex History in Africa (#TIHA) digital archive can contribute to the efforts of organisations, specifically those who cannot publicise their work due to threat of financial and legal consequences (which includes one of our founding partners), to ensure that trans, gender diverse and intersex existence and lived experience is recorded. This record will play a part in ensuring the collaborative strength of the African movements in combating the anti-trans, anti-gender-diverse and anti-intersex sentiment on the continent and in the African diaspora.

The TIHA digital archive acknowledges the existence of multiple movements, networks, groups and individuals and that the stories to be told are intersectional and carry various voices to form histories/herstories/theirstories. We are making a start with the information currently available but invite stories in whatever media to be submitted from across the continent and from the many places and voices not yet represented.

While we are in a continuous process of rethinking this important work, we invite you to engage with the information that the TIHA digital archive and Trans & Intersex Archival Conversations present. Get involved! Reach out! You can list your organisation/group, share your stories through the Timeline or through the Talk Show by getting in touch with us. We particularly invite first person stories and can facilitate the sharing of these in various languages."

  19. #Trans Health Experts Push Back on Youth Care Opposition in #SouthAfrica

by Malaika Delport, Feb 17, 2026

"The Professional Association for Transgender Health South Africa (#PATHSA) has published an important response to discriminatory and harmful arguments that question the legitimacy of gender-affirming care for #transgender and #NonBinary youth.

    [...]

"PATHSA reiterates that being transgender is not a disorder and does not require diagnostic criteria. Gender dysphoria, however, is a recognised clinical condition involving significant distress related to gender incongruence.

"The organisation affirms that SASOP’s paper aligns with standards developed by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, which recommend comprehensive assessment and, where appropriate, access to puberty blockers or hormone therapy."

  21. #African #Queer Youth Initiative

    "Our History

A group of young #LGBTQI+ activists founded the African Queer Youth Initiative during the 5th Changing Faces and Changing Spaces Conference in Nairobi, #Kenya, in June 2015.

Our founding members recognised the need to elevate the needs and aspirations of young people within the larger LGBTQI+ movement and to create a space where they could be seen as equal partners in the struggle for equality. Since then, #AQYI has become a vibrant network of African youth activists united by our shared commitment to building a more #inclusive and #equitable society.

Since our inception, we have grown exponentially; our members come from southern, northern, eastern, and western Africa, as well as the African Islands, representing a diverse and vibrant community of young queer people. We continue to work with African LGBTQI+ youths to develop innovative and youth-led strategies for empowering LGBTQI+ youths across Africa, as well as platforms that allow them to engage actively and have an authentic voice in the fight for their freedom."

  23. ‘Girl, You Just Gay’ – Daily #Microaggressions Faced By #Trans and #NonBinary #Africans

    May 1, 2024

"The #LGBTQI+ community in #Africa has made significant strides in the face of prejudice, homophobia, and discrimination. Despite the challenges posed by punitive laws and conservative cultures, there are efforts to support and mobilise LGBTQI+ youth activists on the continent. However, the community continues to face setbacks, with instances of violence and marginalisation being reported in various African countries. For instance, in South Africa, a country with strong legal protections, violence against LGBT people remains a pressing issue, with at least 24 reported murders in bias-motivated attacks in 2021.

Despite these challenges, there are efforts to advance LGBTQI+ equality globally, including engaging the private sector to help advance LGBTQI+ livelihoods. The private sector's role in respecting the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons is being recognized, with initiatives such as robust business due diligence and human rights-based data collection being promoted to track progress toward LGBTQI+ economic empowerment.

In the midst of these efforts, it is important to acknowledge the specific challenges faced by Trans people and non-binary individuals within the LGBTQI+ community in Africa. While some have found supportive communities, they often experience Micro-aggressions and discrimination within these spaces. It is crucial to address these issues and work towards creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for all members of the LGBTQI+ community in Africa.

    Misgendering, Deadnaming, Marginalising

Trans people and non-binary identifying individuals in the LGBTQI+ community face Micro-aggressions from both within and outside the community. Micro-aggressions against Trans people and non-binary individuals can take various forms, including #misgendering, #deadnaming, and invalidating their gender identity. These Microaggressions can be particularly harmful and contribute to feelings of marginalization, distress, and invalidation. Research has shown that gender minority youth experience more familial #Microaggressions, invalidation of #LGBTQ identity, and threatening behaviours (Arijis Q. et. Al. 2023).

"For instance, assuming that all individuals present as either male or female and failing to recognize non-binary or genderqueer identities can be a form of Micro-aggression. Additionally, making comments that link an Individual's LGBTQI+ identity with illness or pathology, or expressing surprise when someone's sexual orientation or gender identity is revealed, can also be harmful Micro-aggressions."

  25. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and then there is #NonBinary

    International Non-Binary People’s Awareness Day
    Published in 2025

"In Africa, we have the existence of non-binary as far back as there were humans on the continent. Throughout various cultures. The different languages and terminology such as non-binary, #GenderQueer, #Agender and #Genderfluid may not have existed– but the people were there! There is evidence of different genders on the continent long before #colonisers arrived.

    What is Non-Binary

While non-binary people generally identify themselves as being outside the binary of male:female, there are many ways to be non-binary: some identify as a third gender, while others identify with more than one gender, both genders, no gender (agender), being fluid between the genders (genderfluid), or having a gender identity that is fluid and changes. Non-binary people see gender as a spectrum, rather than a binary construct."

#GraziChiosque and #XiomaraSuarez are stuck between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

by Christopher Wiggins, Dec 16, 2025

Excerpt: "Chiosque, 29, lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and works at the Social Security Administration, where she’s been for going on four years. Her wife, Xiomara Suarez, 28, is a Peruvian national in the country legally, who is currently detained at the Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement Processing Center in Southern California. The two women married in February [2025] and filed in May to adjust Suarez’s immigration status, a process that U.S. immigration law explicitly provides for spouses of U.S. citizens.

" 'She had an ICE appointment, like a regular check-in in September,' Chiosque said. 'And that’s when she got detained.' "

  33. WTF #Kansas!

An #AntiTrans #BathroomBill With a Cruel New Twist

A new Kansas law lets those “aggrieved” by the presence of a trans person in a bathroom to file a civil suit for monetary damages.

    Natasha Lennard
    February 3 2026, 8:59 a.m.

"With masked paramilitary forces grabbing nonwhite people from the streets and shooting civilians with impunity, it can be difficult to keep focus on all the other ways Republicans are entrenching a #fascist status quo nationwide. For #trans people, however, the legislative and policy assaults, which have been escalating red states for nearly a decade, are only getting worse — and, as ever, drawing all too little concern from Democratic leaders.

"Just last week, the Kansas legislature passed some of the most far-reaching measures to push trans and #GenderNonconforming people out of public life to date. Bathroom bans that bar trans people from restrooms aligned with their gender identity have become grimly common; over 20 states have such a law on the books. But Kansas’s new anti-trans bathroom bill adds a dangerous twist: a #BountyHunter provision.

"The law would permit private citizens to sue and seek monetary reward based on claiming to encounter a trans person in the bathroom. That’s on top of some of the harshest punishments of any existing bathroom bans, such as criminal charges, steep fines and even jail time.

"As journalist and trans rights advocate Erin Reed first reported, the bill’s vague language means that its reach could extend beyond public buildings — the remit of most bathroom bans around the country.

" 'As written, it would not only be the first bathroom bounty law to target transgender people directly, but also the first to extend a bathroom ban into private spaces,' noted Reed, “effectively creating the nation’s first private bathroom ban if enacted by empowering bounty hunters to search for trans people in bathrooms.'

    [...]

"Kansas Republicans rushed through the bathroom ban, skirting public comment by essentially sneaking the bill into another piece of legislation aimed at denying trans people correct government IDs. The ID legislation is in and of itself extreme: it would invalidate driver’s licenses, government IDs, and even birth certificates that don’t list a person’s sex as assigned at birth.

"The bill would require trans people to surrender their correctly identifying driver’s license or risk a misdemeanor offense for driving with a invalid license. Trans Kansans would thus have to choose between carrying identification with their assigned sex at birth — inviting potentially further harassment and violence in public — or forgoing aspects of public life entirely. It’s a policy in line with the Trump administration’s move to stop issuing accurate passports to trans Americans."

  35. #Gay sheep - what the FAQ?!

"Did you know that about 1 in 12 sheep is gay? And we are not just talking about rams. According to scientists, same-sex behaviour has been documented in over 1500 species. You see, queerness is quite prevalent on planet Earth. But sadly, there are still many people that have a problem with it. The shocking truth is: 62 countries still criminalize same-sex relationships – that’s right, it’s illegal to be gay in one third of the world! And even where it is not illegal, cases of queer hostility are increasing – including in Germany. This is why we are getting the help from a gay flock of rams in a small town in Germany: We are using their wool to create fashion products that support projects for the queer community."

  39. Texas A&M is banning #Plato, citing his “#GenderIdeology.”

    Brittany Allen January 12, 2026

"Today, Texas A&M resumes classes for the spring semester—but a number of canonized texts will not be welcomed back to school. The public research university has lately been caught in the crossfire between state and stupid.

As The Texas Tribune has reported, faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences were informed just last week that 'a new system policy restricting classroom discussions of race and gender' is set to take effect today.

The policy, engineered and approved by the Texas A&M University Regents last November, requires that the school’s president sign off on every syllabus with an eye to scrubbing 'problematic' content. But the foes were loosely framed.

Under the new restrictions, gender ideology is defined as 'a concept of self-assessed #GenderIdentity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.' Race ideology entails 'attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity' or anything that 'promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction.'

As a European history professor pointed out at the time, this wording could effectively prohibit a professor from teaching about the Holocaust.

The regents used AI analysis software to audit syllabi for unapproved content. Thanks to this rude mech, 200 courses have been cancelled, stripped of core curricular credit value, or forced into revision.

The hammer came down over the weekend for assorted religion, film, ethnic studies, sociology, communications, and literature classes. And in a truly-beyond-parody move, a philosophy professor, Martin Peterson, was told to 'either remove ‘modules on race and gender ideology' ' from his course, or be reassigned to teach a different class entirely.

Most philosophy nerds will recognize the 'gender ideology' readings in question, which are lifted from the Symposium. The university apparently quibbled with Plato’s reference the the 'Myth of #Androgyne,' in which #Aristophanes describes three genders.

Most musical theatre nerds will also catch the reference—the same myth was called up in #JohnCameronMitchell and #StephenTrask’s epic ballad, 'The Origin of Love,”'from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Even as we note the rise of smoothbrain rhetoric sea to sea, the fact that Plato has been deemed inappropriate for an Introduction to Philosophy course is a surreal escalation of terms.

Meanwhile, A&M students are set to be deprived of so much recent world. Including but not limited to 'literature with major plot lines that concern #gay, #lesbian or #transgender identities,' #feminist and #queer film, or #race and #ethnicity as a subject…fullstop.

As Abby Monteil at them reports, these curricular restrictions have all trickled down from the Trump administration, which continues to dangle federal funding as a carrot for universities compliant with its agenda. We simply hate to see it.

As you go about your reading today, pour one out for the Aggies."

"[Will Geer] began his acting career touring in tent shows and on river boats.

"Geer was also the lover of #GayActivist #HarryHay. In 1934, Hay met Geer at the Tony Pastor Theatre, where Geer worked as an actor. They became lovers, and Hay credited Geer as his political mentor. Hay and Geer participated in a milk strike in Los Angeles, where Hay was first exposed to #RadicalGay #Activism in the person of '#Clarabelle,' a #DragQueen who held court in the Bunker Hill neighborhood, who hid Hay from police.

"Geer made his Broadway debut as Pistol in a 1928 production of Much Ado About Nothing, created the role of Mr. Mister in Marc Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock, played Candy in John Steinbeck’s theatrical adaptation of his novella Of Mice and Men, and appeared in numerous plays and revues throughout the 1940s. From 1948 to 1951, he appeared in more than a dozen movies, including Winchester ’73, Broken Arrow, Comanche Territory (1950) and Bright Victory.

"Geer became a member of the #CommunistParty of the United States in 1934. Geer was also influential in introducing Harry Hay to organizing in the Communist Party.

"Geer became a dedicated activist, touring government work camps in the 1930s with folk singers like #BurlIves and #WoodyGuthrie (whom he introduced to the People’s World and the #DailyWorker; Guthrie would go on to write a column for the latter paper). In 1956, the duo released an album together on Folkways Records, titled Bound for Glory: Songs and Stories of Woody Guthrie. In his biography, fellow organizer and gay rights pioneer Harry Hay described Geer’s activism and outlined their activities while organizing for the strike. Geer is credited with introducing Guthrie to #PeteSeeger at the ‘Grapes of Wrath’ benefit Geer organized in 1940 for #MigrantFarmWorkers.

"Geer did summer stock at the Pine Brook Country Club located in the countryside of Nichols, Connecticut with the Group Theatre (New York) studying under Lee Strasberg.

"Geer was blacklisted in the early 1950s for refusing to testify before the House Committee on #UnAmerican Activities. As a result, Geer appeared in very few films over the following decade. Notable among them was Salt of the Earth which was produced, directed, written, and starring blacklisted Hollywood personnel and told the story of a miners’ #strike in New Mexico from a pro-#union standpoint."
