  1. By "educated" I would mean what Jefferson meant...having read the major works of literature, having an understanding of the broad periods of history into which the world's past is divided, perhaps speaking another language or at least being aware of other languages and having some competence. But I don't look to find an educated person in the ranks of university graduates, necessarily. Some of the most educated people I know have never been near a university.

  2. If one has talent it pushes for utterance and torments one; it will out....There is nothing in this thing of learning out of books. Here, here and here [the ear, the head, the heart] is your school. If everything is right there, then take your pen and down with it; afterwards ask the opinion of a man who knows his business.

  3. It is almost always possible to present an intellectually honest and engaging account of any field, using a minimum of technical apparatus. This is seldom done, however, since most priesthoods are inclined to hide behind a wall of mystery and to commune only with their fellow priests.

  4. Popular theology ... is a massive inconsistency derived from ignorance.... The gods exist because nature herself has imprinted a conception of them on the minds of men.

  5. No young man should go into politics if he wants to get rich or if he expects an adequate reward for his services. An honest public servant can't become rich in politics. He can only attain greatness and satisfaction by service.

  6. The most important scientific revolutions all include, as their only common feature, the dethronement of human arrogance from one pedestal after another of previous convictions about our centrality in the cosmos.

  7. I had fallen victim to the fallacy of the 'growing edge'; the belief that only the very frontier of scientific advance counted; that everything that had been left behind by that advance was faded and dead.

  8. Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.

  10. Some writers confuse authenticity, which they ought always to aim at, with originality, which they should never bother about.

  12. Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.
