"Come learn about the piping plover and what makes it so special, while taking a walk on #LaudholmBeach!

"In 1981 there were only seven pairs of piping plovers in the entire state of Maine. After decades of hard work and dedication, in 2025 there was a record 174 pairs recorded! Come learn about this federally threatened and state endangered beach-nesting shorebird and what makes it so special. Helen Manning, a Wildlife Biologist from #RachelCarsonNationalWildlifeRefuge, will lead an educational walk on the Wells Reserves Laudholm Beach to discuss the biology of the piping plover and the monitoring and management efforts that have helped this species begin to make a recovery."

On Saturday, more than a dozen '#HandsOff' rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action targeting the new Trump administration.

"On Saturday, more than a dozen rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action to protest the policies of President Donald Trump.
The “Hands Off” rallies were scheduled from #WellsME to as far north as #LubecME. In Portland, protesters gathered in Monument Square at 11 a.m., while one of the day’s first protests began in Freeport just after 8 a.m.

"Portland police said they were aware of the Monument Square demonstration in advance and would 'be giving it special attention as we do all protests that we are aware of within the city,' department spokesperson Brad Nadeau said in an email Friday afternoon.
