  1. #WellsME - Eyes on the #Estuary: A Visit to the Research Marsh

Explore current field research projects happening along the trail and out on the #SaltMarsh !

    Thursday, August 6, 2026, 10:00am – 12:00pm
    Cost: Free with Admission

"As visitors to the Wells Reserve explore the natural beauty along the trails, a group of scientists are working in the background to better understand these important #ecosystems. On this guided walk, we will dive deeper into these ongoing research projects to learn about the impacts of invasive plant and crab species, restoration of the endangered New England Cottontail, and participate in hands-on water quality monitoring.

"This program is about 1.75 hours and covers about 1 mile round trip. Much of the walk will be out on the salt marsh so close-toed shoes/boots that can get a little wet or muddy and long pants are recommended. This program is geared towards adult audiences, but is open to interested participants as young as middle school.

"Your guide, Gail, is a retired marine biologist and high school science teacher and current #WellsReserve volunteer. "

  25. #WellsME - Signs of the Seasons #CommunityScienceTraining- date change to 4/29/26

    Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 10:30am – 12:30pm

Learn how to easily turn your nature observations into valuable research data.

    Reservations Required!

"Are you in tune with nature and your wild neighbors? Do you notice when the red maple flowers burst in the spring, when monarch caterpillars begin to munch on milkweed in late summer, or when the first leaves drop in autumn?

Join us at our #SignsOfTheSeasons Community Science Workshop and learn how to turn your nature observations into valuable data used by scientists (nationally and globally) to document seasonal and long-term change.

Signs of the Seasons, is a #MaineSeaGrant community science program that trains volunteers to observe and record #phenology (seasonal changes) in #plants and #animals using #NaturesNotebook. Participants will learn about the why and how-to of collecting phenology data, practice making observations, and leave with the tools and knowledge to document changes in their own backyard or community.

Making a pack basket can be a fun and rewarding project and a perfect gift!

A pack basket is a traditional type of backpack used for carrying items while hiking, hunting, or for general outdoor activities. Pack baskets have a long history dating back centuries and have been used by various cultures around the world. Here in Maine our Maine Guides walked the woods with these packs to transport supplies and game through rugged terrain.

In this course, we will weave a 10-12” tall basket with premium reed. We will go over the history of pack baskets and what materials have been used. The instructor will go through the process of making the basket step-by-step ensuring all will walk away with a finished basket. The baskets will have a base and feet along with pack straps. We will bring a variety of color straps and even color reeds to add a little color to your basket. Walk away with a pack basket and the knowledge for life! All level weavers are welcome EVEN if you have never weaved!"

#WellsME Police Department backs out of #ICE program amid opposition from hundreds of residents

by Russ Reed, Oct 23, 2025

"The Wells police chief has announced the department has ended its involvement in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, four months after more than 900 residents of the Maine town signed a petition calling on the police department to withdraw.

"The announcement was made at the start of Tuesday's meeting of the Wells Select Board, as Town Manager Michael Pardue read a statement from Chief of Police Jo-Ann Putnam, who was away at training.

" 'I have consistently maintained that politics and policing should remain separate. Unfortunately, as of late, these lines have become blurred,' Putnam said in her statement. 'Considering recent events over the weekend, and with the safety of Wells residents and visitors as our priority, I have made the decision to withdraw from participation in the 287(g) program with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.'

"On April 2, ICE finalized an agreement with the Wells Police Department under the federal agency's 287(g) Task Force Model, which serves as a force multiplier by allowing state and local law enforcement agencies to enforce limited immigration authority during routine police enforcement duties. Under this model, state and local law enforcement agencies are allowed to carry out immigration enforcement activities in non-custodial settings while under ICE supervision and oversight.

"Putnam had said she decided to have the Wells Police Department join the 287(g) program so officers could take action when they come into contact with a person who has a criminal warrant and is in the country illegally. She did state there was never any intent to have the department do proactive immigration enforcement on behalf of ICE.

"In the ensuing months, a number of Wells residents raised concerns over the agreement with ICE, citing the harm it would do to immigrant families, financial and legal liabilities for the town, a potential decline in tourism and community #polarization. There have also been multiple #protests in the town over the police department's agreement with ICE."

    Saturday, October 4, 2025,
    10:30am – 1:00pm

"Join Boot Boutwell to explore the world of native New England shrubs in autumn!

"Shrubs are a key part of New England landscapes. This program will take a close look at about ten common native New England shrubs, such as high bush blueberry, silky dogwood, sheep laurel, meadowsweet and steeplebush as well as a few non-native invasive shrubs. The program will focus on plant identification as well as fun and interesting #NaturalHistory. We’ll see a plant which colonial Americans used to make candles, a plant whose fruit sea captains used to bring on long voyages to help prevent scurvy, and a plant which the Chippewa used to restore balance in their lives. And as winter is coming and the leaves are going, we’ll also consider some winter identification characteristics. Children ages 10 and up are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult."
