    Plans unveiled for removal of #BarMillsDam on #SacoRiver

    #Brookfield is seeking public comment on its latest proposal to remove all parts of the dam that are visible from the Main Street bridge in #BuxtonME and #HollisME

    "Brookfield White Pine Hydro, the Maine branch of #BrookfieldRenewable Partners, rolled out its latest plan for decommissioning the Bar Mills Project dam in Buxton and Hollis to the public last week. The company intends to conduct a full removal rather than the partial removal it proposed in 2022.

    "The dam, which sits in the Saco River on the Hollis-Buxton border, has not operated since 2017, when it was found to have concrete issues that prevented it from generating electricity. The company had to decide whether to repower the station, reconstruct the powerhouse and install a fish passage, or surrender and remove the project. It chose to surrender.

    "Brookfield is preparing to file its application in the fall for federal, state and local permits to move forward with the decommissioning work. It is seeking feedback on its new plan for the remainder of the summer. Initial questions and comments were heard at a public meeting at the Hollis Town Hall on June 25.

    "[My hero] Rita Bradbury spoke at the meeting about concerns about the type of revegetation that will occur in the area, particularly invasive species like #JapaneseKnotweeds that she has seen year after year growing near Usher Island.

    " 'I’d like to see a plan from Brookfield where you take it seriously that we don’t want to have an open area for invasive species,' she said. 'I’d like to see a wetland biologist involved so that the right things would grow at the right places and maybe see if there could be a replanting of #NativeSpecies.'

    "She also called on Brookfield to remove every part of the dam that it is not using, including the powerhouse spillway, to protect the natural environment and eliminate safety hazards."

    #Maine - Indian Cellar

    "#SacoRiver Indian Cellar is an 81-acre municipal park maintained by the Hollis Conservation Commission. Visitors will find 8 different trails encompassing 2.5 miles that lead to the scenic shores of the Saco River and a handful of picnic spots. The preserve offers opportunities for cross-country skiing, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, running, snowshoeing, swimming, and hiking. Canoe and kayak access to Indian Cellar is available nearby at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton. The #LandForMainesFuture Board supported the acquisition of the Saco River Indian Cellar in 2009.

    "Indian Cellar Preserve contains roughly three miles of trails that lead to the mouth of the Saco River. A 1.6-mile perimeter trail wraps around the river, with several additional interior trails. The site divides the towns of #BuxtonME and #HollisME. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities at the site during all four seasons, including swimming, hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.

    "The Indian Cellar got its name from the bedrock walls along the Saco River, which were deep and cool enough for #Indigenous people to store their food. Thanks to the town of Hollis, the Land for Maine’s Future program, and several private donors, the site was preserved in 2009 after a developer proposed dividing the land into several expensive lots."

    On one side of the #SacoRiver in #HollisMaine is #IndianCellarPreserve ...

    "This is a lovely 81-acre preserve by the Saco River, with great #WalkingTrails. All together, there are about 3 miles of trails here, as well as some #swimming spots. There is a promontory with a great vista of the Saco River and a little picnic table. This preserve seems to be less trammeled than its neighbor across the river — #PleasantPointPark — and also somewhat popular with #MountainBikers. The perimeter trail, which is about 1.6 miles or so, is very well blazed. The interior trails are less well marked and seemingly less used.

    "There is also more information about the site at the #TrustForPublicLand.

    "Directions: If you’re coming from #Route202 east, you will turn left after crossing the bridge over the Saco River from Buxton. Take a left onto Old Alfred Road, and the parking lot is immediately on your left. You’ll see a sign for the preserve, and some stone steps."
