  1. Well rats... The #CommunityGarden is looking pretty sad (except for my plot neighbor's peppers). I salvaged the Mammoth Sunflower seed head, and the cosmos and zinnias are still blooming and the cornflowers are winding down. I'm still planning on planting some oats, barley and clover in my plot, but since the electric fence is either not functioning or the deer just jump it, I don't have high hopes for the garden continuing (I've seen this story before -- but last time we kept it going for five years). Anyhow, I talked to hubby about expanding the home garden so I can start doing proper crop rotation. I mean, who needs a front yard lawn -- especially since part of it (the other side of the driveway) is becoming a mini-wildflower meadow anyway.

  7. How Indigenous food sovereignty can improve food security

Excerpt: "How can revitalizing Indigenous food systems improve food security?

Revitalizing Indigenous food systems can help diversify and localize food systems in ways that could buffer against food insecurity in a changing climate.

Dr. Grenz’s research team is working alongside Indigenous communities impacted by the 2021 heat dome and wildfires to understand the effects on culturally important plants.

'If you think of land as just vegetation and an aesthetic notion of what belongs, you’re going to have very different approaches and different outcomes to recovery than if you see that land as a food system, not just for humans, but for our animal, bird, fish and insect relations,' says Dr. Grenz. 'We’re working alongside communities to develop those Indigenized processes around wildfire recovery that honour Indigenous food systems, sustainability and resiliency.'

How can #settlers support the revitalization of Indigenous food systems?

Learn about the histories of the lands you live on and what the traditional food systems were, what they are now and what they could be, says Dr. Grenz.

Incorporating reciprocity into your relationship with the land is also important. 'Learn about the plants of those lands and find a way to invite them into your life. How can you take care of them, nurture them and steward them?' asks Dr. Grenz.

'One way might be to #Indigenize your own #backyard or #CommunityGarden. Or learn about Indigenous food system protocols and the concept of '#HonourableHarvest.' "

  8. This photo was sent to me via text.
It's from my friend, Jeff, whom I originally met off of Mastodon, back in 2022. We met in person in 2023 & exchanged plants🪴We've stayed friends over the years. We are working towards similar community building goals, in separate areas of the island. Ideally, would love to have a full food security, localized food systems 'spine', running West-East/South-North, across #VancouverIsland.
Jeff lives up island with his wife & kids. He also works in #nonprofit #FoodSecurity & #environmental #stewardship. He works for #Greenways #LandTrust in #CampbellRiver :

This shows some of the work they've done at Maple Park Community Garden in partnership with #Strathcona Regional District. They acquired that land to steward/grow, earlier this year 💚👩‍🌾👨‍🌾👏

  9. I finally found a community garden (Viaduc Garden) for my compost. During the last 4 weeks, I stored it in my freezer 😄.

Just a 15-minute bike ride passing through the Brussels Park.

I'm looking forward to meeting the community for the next event.

  10. An excellent resource from #EcoMaine!

    #FoodWaste and #Composting

"Did you know that almost a third of what we throw away is leftover or spoiled food? If Maine is to achieve a 50% recycling rate, we need to recover our food waste, too – it’s worth the weight!

"ecomaine added food waste recycling to our sustainable waste management solutions in order to help Maine reach its recycling goal. We continue to build food waste recycling capacity in southern Maine, serving as a central collection point for grocery stores, institutions, and participating cities and towns.

"Collected food waste is transported to #ExeterME’s #AgriEnergy [#AgricycleEnergy] to be de-packaged and anaerobically digested to produce sustainable power, organic farm #fertilizer, and cow bedding for the #Maine family dairy farm #StonyvaleFarm. Any packaging removed from the food waste is delivered back to ecomaine to be burned for energy—keeping all of it out of our #landfills!

"By making #composting, anaerobic digestion, and food waste recycling so easy, we encourage our communities to dispose of their waste responsibly.

"For more on compost that’s 'Worth The Weight,' check out our informational pamphlet!

    #BackyardComposting

"Backyard composting is one of the easiest ways to keep organic material out of the trash. It also has some other great advantages:

    - It doesn’t weigh your trash down as much.
    - It doesn’t get into ecomaine‘s waste-to-energy plant, making our combustion more damp and less efficient.
    - It’s easy – and “grass-cycling” (leaving clippings on the lawn) is better for your grass!
    - It saves Maine’s towns money on collection and hauling.
    - And it saves YOU money on trash bags!

"There are no trucks or driving involved – no carbon emissions! You just walk it out to your bin, and that’s it.

"In the end, composting produces rich #soil for flower and vegetable #gardens – without paying for it (again) at the store.

    Drop Off Locations

"If you’re looking for a compost drop-off location, instead of putting it in your backyard, here are a few… If you know of one that’s not here, let us know! (Some facilities may be for residents only; we advise calling ahead if you’re not sure.)

  11. I watered a section of the neiborhood's park yesterday and I got a reward for that today 😊 #gardening #CommunityGarden #UrbanFlora #BancoDeAlegrías

  12. Rex Welland was a longtime local resident who loved collecting lots of #HeritageApple species. He spent a lifetime, collecting cuttings & grafting to grow in his large backyard. He donated this land, which was his backyard, as part of #LandConservancy agreement with the Town of View Royal to keep it as a heritage orchard for the community to steward & share.

    There's 125 heritage #apple species growing there.

  13. #Hardhack aka #RoseSpirea - #SpiraeaDouglasii

#NativePlant in #PacificNorthwest regions. We've used this plant at several habitat/ecological restoration areas - across Southern #VancouverIsland. It is an excellent plant for riparian revegetation & pollinators love their bright pink, tiny flowers too.

#PNW #Indigenous peoples use the plant for making brooms & for hanging seafood to cook.

It grows in almost any soil conditions, even very dry & gravelly soil but prefers boggy/wet areas.

  14. They were queuing up at Wilmslow Community Market Gardens first ever stall at the town’s market last month! 🥕🍅🥦

Transition Wilmslow is working towards a ring of gardens around the town growing much of its fruit and veg, and this gave them a new outlet to get the fresh, local, organic food to people.

They also have a stall at their Oakenclough garden at a local children’s centre, and this month, they’re working with a local chef to run ‘plot to plate’ sessions with local families – harvesting straight from the allotment and cooking it up in tasty dishes on the day.

It’s funded by a Transition Together seed funding grant, made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
