Well rats... The #CommunityGarden is looking pretty sad (except for my plot neighbor's peppers). I salvaged the Mammoth Sunflower seed head, and the cosmos and zinnias are still blooming and the cornflowers are winding down. I'm still planning on planting some oats, barley and clover in my plot, but since the electric fence is either not functioning or the deer just jump it, I don't have high hopes for the garden continuing (I've seen this story before -- but last time we kept it going for five years). Anyhow, I talked to hubby about expanding the home garden so I can start doing proper crop rotation. I mean, who needs a front yard lawn -- especially since part of it (the other side of the driveway) is becoming a mini-wildflower meadow anyway.

I put up some #CoyotePee tags at some strategic spots around the #CommunityGarden, and also sprayed all the wooden posts. TBH, #CoyoteUrine isn't the worst thing I've ever smelled. Sortakinda reminded me of hanging out at the dog park!

So, whether #Coyote pee will work as a #DeerDeterrent depends on whether the local coyotes hunt the local deer. Where I live, that is the case, so I'm going to try some fabric dunked in #CoyoteUrine and tied in strategic spots to see if that works against the #Deer in the #CommunityGarden . I think long-term, we need to put in a 3-D fence, which I'll post about in a bit. Judging by the tracks I saw in the pumpkin patch, it definitely looked like someone jumped over the fence (and the fence was a bit lower in one spot).
Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Apply Coyote Urine
"Most people buy predator urine, apply it once in a few obvious spots, and then declare that it did not work. The product is not the problem. The application is.
"Coyote urine is a genuine, potent biological deterrent, but it only performs when it is placed correctly, at the right height, in the right zones, and refreshed on the right schedule. Once you understand how to apply coyote urine the way wildlife actually experiences it, the difference in results is significant.
Read Your Property for Animal Signs Before You Apply
Spraying randomly without knowing where animals are moving is the single biggest waste of product. Before you open a bottle, spend 10 to 15 minutes walking your property and reading the evidence wildlife has already left behind.
Signs that tell you where to focus:
● Tracks in soft soil, mud, or frost near fence lines, garden edges, and outbuildings.
● Worn paths or flattened grass indicate repeated travel routes.
● Scat near feeding areas, denning sites, or along walls.
● Digging, especially near turf edges, garden beds, or the base of structures.
● Chewed plant material, stripped bark, or disturbed mulch."Learn more:
https://www.thepeemart.com/blogs/news/how-to-apply-coyote-urineHow Long Does Coyote Urine Last?
December 19, 2022
"Coyote Urine Usually Lasts For a Week Or Two
Urine degrades fairly quickly when outside, which is why coyotes frequently mark their territory with pee. It’s often inconvenient for us to spread urine outside every day, but it is important to do it frequently to keep the scent strong.
[...]
How Long is the Shelf-Life of Coyote Urine
If it’s stored in a sealed container away from heat and moisture, it can last for multiple years.
[...]
What Animals are Affected by Coyote Urine?
If you’re trying to ward off animals from visiting your yard, coyote urine can usually deter common coyote prey like rodents, raccoons, rabbits, and cats.
It can also deter white-tailed deer, which are occasionally preyed upon by coyotes. But it’s not a surefire way of getting rid of deer, who will munch on plants regardless of urine scent if they’re really hungry.
Results with deer also depend on if they are used to having coyotes around as predators. In some areas, coyotes have easier prey to catch and rarely go after deer. Deer in these areas will likely not be scared of coyote urine."

Well damn! Something has been nibbling on the vegetable plants at the #CommunityGarden. TBH, I think a deer figured out how to jump over the electric fence (though I did find the fence open a couple of times this month, so that could have just put out the "welcome mat"). I recall finding what looked like deer tracks near the pumpkin patch, where the green pumpkins on the outer edge all had huge chunks taken out of them.
In my plot, my mammoth sunflower was de-leaved pretty high up (deer), as well as some squash and bean plants. Luckily, they don't like my flowers, or the Nightshades, and seem to have left my plot neighbor's corn alone... For now...
I think we need a real fence around the garden. Sigh...

The electric fence and shiny pie plates seem to be working at the #CommunityGarden, and my simple wire fence (with bells attached) seems to be working in my #HomeGarden.
Low-Cost Ways to Keep Deer Away From Ripening Crops
July 25, 2026
"A garden full of ripening tomatoes, beans, peppers, and melons can look like a five-star restaurant to a hungry deer. The frustrating part comes when a gardener checks the garden in the morning and finds half-eaten tomatoes, trampled plants, or a neat row of bean plants that suddenly looks like a salad bar with legs.
"Protecting crops does not always require an expensive fence or a complicated gadget. A few inexpensive changes can make the garden less inviting, more confusing, or simply harder to reach, and the best results often come from combining two or three methods instead of relying on one magical deer-repelling trick."

An excellent resource from #EcoMaine!
"Did you know that almost a third of what we throw away is leftover or spoiled food? If Maine is to achieve a 50% recycling rate, we need to recover our food waste, too – it’s worth the weight!
"ecomaine added food waste recycling to our sustainable waste management solutions in order to help Maine reach its recycling goal. We continue to build food waste recycling capacity in southern Maine, serving as a central collection point for grocery stores, institutions, and participating cities and towns.
"Collected food waste is transported to #ExeterME’s #AgriEnergy [#AgricycleEnergy] to be de-packaged and anaerobically digested to produce sustainable power, organic farm #fertilizer, and cow bedding for the #Maine family dairy farm #StonyvaleFarm. Any packaging removed from the food waste is delivered back to ecomaine to be burned for energy—keeping all of it out of our #landfills!
"By making #composting, anaerobic digestion, and food waste recycling so easy, we encourage our communities to dispose of their waste responsibly.
"For more on compost that’s 'Worth The Weight,' check out our informational pamphlet!
#BackyardComposting"Backyard composting is one of the easiest ways to keep organic material out of the trash. It also has some other great advantages:
- It doesn’t weigh your trash down as much.
- It doesn’t get into ecomaine‘s waste-to-energy plant, making our combustion more damp and less efficient.
- It’s easy – and “grass-cycling” (leaving clippings on the lawn) is better for your grass!
- It saves Maine’s towns money on collection and hauling.
- And it saves YOU money on trash bags!"There are no trucks or driving involved – no carbon emissions! You just walk it out to your bin, and that’s it.
"In the end, composting produces rich #soil for flower and vegetable #gardens – without paying for it (again) at the store.Drop Off Locations
"If you’re looking for a compost drop-off location, instead of putting it in your backyard, here are a few… If you know of one that’s not here, let us know! (Some facilities may be for residents only; we advise calling ahead if you’re not sure.)

This was our #CommunityGarden plot back in its first year, 2010. We cleared a pile of debris from the previous year and planted seeds a friend gave me. He turned me on to both #HeirloomVegetables and #SeedSaving . We only had a half plot then but in 2011 we took the other half plot and have gardened in the same space since. I was so excited to see things grow and the excitement is still there every year. #Gardening #Vegetables #Herbs #FlashBackFriday
