#Composting program to provide #Everglades with soil for #CommunityGarden

"Your #FoodScraps could be used to help support the Everglades through a new partnership between the village of #PinecrestFL and the #MiccosukeeTribe.

"Instead of dumping #FoodWaste into crowded #landfills, which produce #methane emissions, the #EvergladesEarthCycleProject will expand Pinecrest's residential composting program and deliver nutrient-rich soil to the #Miccosukee Tribe.

"Driving the news: The project, funded with a $400,000 federal grant and other contributions, calls for installing four new #CompostingBins in Pinecrest and three around #MiamiDade County District 7.

"The initial phase of the program will supply compost to the #SwampyMeadows #CommunityGarden, which grows vegetables just outside the Miccosukee Indian School.

"Another proposal that's been floated is adding new soil to the Everglades' tree islands, though that would need tribal approval, says the Rev. Houston R. Cypress of the #LoveTheEverglades Movement, a partner in the program.

"Cypress told reporters on an airboat ride through the Everglades last week that the tribe teaches 'the essence of being in harmony with nature is giving back to it.'

"'With the Everglades Earth Cycle Project, we're giving back clean and healthy soil; we're giving products that might eventually improve the water quality out here, but we're also giving directly back to local indigenous communities here,' he said.

"Pinecrest already has two free public composting bins, one at the Pinecrest Public Library and another between the Community Center and Pinecrest Gardens."

The #CharlesRiver #CommunityGarden in #AllstonMA helped me to cope when I lived in the city. While I didn't have a plot, I still enjoyed the #GreenSpace and it helped ground and calm me. I hope it stays around for many, many more years!

History of our Garden

"The Charles River Community Garden, #CRCG, was established in 1979/80 by Julie Hensler, who could not find an available plot in the Herter Garden. She contacted the Dept of Food and Agriculture community gardening program and was told there was land further upstream. She rounded up 20 friends and they staked out a 60’ x 40’ garden and turned the soil. It was then divided into 10’ x 20’ plots. Adjacent to the CRCG was the #BostonFoodCoop Small #VictoryGarden. In 1985-86 Julie and her husband took a year off to travel around the world, giving the work of Garden Coordinator to two gardeners who failed to do the job. The garden appeared abandoned and the Dept of Agriculture threatened to terminate the lease. 'Julie called all of the garden members from 1984: many had moved, some had just given up. The list of active gardeners was only about half a dozen people. Everywhere Jule went she tried to convince people to join the garden. Those who joined took 2, 3 or even 4 plots to keep the garden running. The effort was successful, and the garden got approval from the Dept of Agriculture to continue.' In 1996 the two gardens merged under Sue Wymelenberg, who secured funds for the fence and formed the Garden Council. Sue was succeeded by Peter Burns."

Our work focused in East Portland, the most ethnically diverse and lowest income area of our city.

"Grow Portland led the successful expansion of #CommunityGarden access for #refugees and #immigrants, creating important healing spaces for families recovering from trauma and displacement. Our organization is now focused on school garden education through our #GardenSchool program where we partner with regional schools. Community gardens are managed by our partners, the City of Portland Community Gardens Program and nonprofit, Outgrowing Hunger who can help interested gardeners enroll in a plot in these gardens.

"Our community gardens work started at the height of the financial crisis when our region faced a huge waiting list for community garden plots. So, I'll have to run this by the #CommunityGarden committee, but my inclination is to plant cover crops over the garden plots folks are using, and encourage them to switch it up next spring. My farmer friend liked the idea of keeping a few plots for the garden free for that reason. I have buckwheat as well as a clover-poppy mix on-hand. Has anyone else who uses #CommunityGardens done this? To me it makes sense to try and rotate things a bit and have #CoverCrops to regenerate the soil.

"Duarte residents will soon have a new space to grow fresh produce, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the outdoors. Last month, the Duarte City Council approved the development of the Duarte Community Garden at Tzeitel Paras-Caracci Park (2701 Royal Oaks Drive).

"'This project exemplifies our dedication to creating #sustainable, #accessible spaces for our residents,' said Mayor Cesar A. Garcia. 'This garden will not only enhance the beauty of our park but also provide a space where our community can come together, learn, and share in the joy of nature. I am excited to see this project grow and look forward to it becoming a vibrant part of our community.'

"The goal of the Duarte Community Garden is to increase #FoodSovereignty by creating garden plots for community members to grow healthy food, cultivate agricultural literacy with educational programs, gather community by creating a welcoming and accessible garden space, and perform ecosystem services by removing grass, installing a sustainable #DripIrrigation system, building a #NativeHabitatGarden, and collecting #compost.

"The garden will feature 20 plots and two #ADAAccessible raised beds, available for rent at $5 per month. Community members can plant edible (excluding smokable) plants and flowers for personal, noncommercial use. It will include a storage shed with garden tools, an irrigation system promoting sustainable practices, and ADA-accessible decomposed granite pathways.

"The garden will be run in partnership with Food Exploration and Discovery (#FoodEd), a nonprofit organization that collaborates with San Gabriel Valley communities to create edible education sites and provide programs on #ecosystem #stewardship, healthy living, #environmental innovation, and entrepreneurship.

"Food Ed’s educational model will support gardeners of all skill levels, providing supplies and plants for beginners while experienced gardeners can use their own resources. The garden will also offer picnic benches for community #gatherings and host educational programs on topics like #VegetableGardening, #composting, #DroughtTolerant landscaping, and #SoilHealth.

"As the lead on this grant project, Food Ed will be responsible for building the #DuarteCommunityGarden. Inspired by Caitlin Ffrench's book Gathering Colour, I planted indigo in my #CommunityGarden plot this year. I can't be arsed to deal with an indigo vat in our apartment, so I experimented with fresh leaf indigo dyeing.

Some things I learned:

1. Salt & whole leaves mashed into the fabric (the shawls at each end) yielded bluer tones; blender slurry with cold water & salt (the scarves in the middle & the yarn) gave greener tones.

Resting among the herbs: Monty waits patiently while I gather herbs in the P-Patch herb garden for the food share this morning. I gathered lovage, sage, oregano and basil. The basil and lovage were powerfully scented!

In this area, it's almost impossible to avoid #RustRot on #pear #trees. In fact, many of us joke that you can identify pear trees by looking for rust rot. Not to worry because it doesn't affect fruit production & it's mostly an esthetics issue. The fruits will still grow & mature with rust rot on foliage.

Rex Welland was a longtime local resident who loved collecting lots of #HeritageApple species. He spent a lifetime, collecting cuttings & grafting to grow in his large backyard. He donated this land, which was his backyard, as part of #LandConservancy agreement with the Town of View Royal to keep it as a heritage orchard for the community to steward & share.

There's 125 heritage #apple species growing there.

#NativePlant in #PacificNorthwest regions. We've used this plant at several habitat/ecological restoration areas - across Southern #VancouverIsland. It is an excellent plant for riparian revegetation & pollinators love their bright pink, tiny flowers too.

#PNW #Indigenous peoples use the plant for making brooms & for hanging seafood to cook.

It grows in almost any soil conditions, even very dry & gravelly soil but prefers boggy/wet areas.

I don’t know if it’s the same queen who originally built a nest in the underside of the small plastic storage bench (the first photo shows the part of it in the left). I attached the nest under the roof of the waspHouse.
