  1. @greenyouthmovement We were having some success with smaller pumpkins in our #CommunityGarden , but then the deer found them... 🙁 If you have local goats around, make sure they don't find them!

  2. So, whether #Coyote pee will work as a #DeerDeterrent depends on whether the local coyotes hunt the local deer. Where I live, that is the case, so I'm going to try some fabric dunked in #CoyoteUrine and tied in strategic spots to see if that works against the #Deer in the #CommunityGarden . I think long-term, we need to put in a 3-D fence, which I'll post about in a bit. Judging by the tracks I saw in the pumpkin patch, it definitely looked like someone jumped over the fence (and the fence was a bit lower in one spot).

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Apply Coyote Urine

"Most people buy predator urine, apply it once in a few obvious spots, and then declare that it did not work. The product is not the problem. The application is.

"Coyote urine is a genuine, potent biological deterrent, but it only performs when it is placed correctly, at the right height, in the right zones, and refreshed on the right schedule. Once you understand how to apply coyote urine the way wildlife actually experiences it, the difference in results is significant.

Read Your Property for Animal Signs Before You Apply

Spraying randomly without knowing where animals are moving is the single biggest waste of product. Before you open a bottle, spend 10 to 15 minutes walking your property and reading the evidence wildlife has already left behind.

Signs that tell you where to focus:
    ● Tracks in soft soil, mud, or frost near fence lines, garden edges, and outbuildings.
    ● Worn paths or flattened grass indicate repeated travel routes.
    ● Scat near feeding areas, denning sites, or along walls.
    ● Digging, especially near turf edges, garden beds, or the base of structures.
    ● Chewed plant material, stripped bark, or disturbed mulch."

How Long Does Coyote Urine Last?

    December 19, 2022

"Coyote Urine Usually Lasts For a Week Or Two

Urine degrades fairly quickly when outside, which is why coyotes frequently mark their territory with pee. It’s often inconvenient for us to spread urine outside every day, but it is important to do it frequently to keep the scent strong.

    [...]

How Long is the Shelf-Life of Coyote Urine

If it’s stored in a sealed container away from heat and moisture, it can last for multiple years.

    [...]

What Animals are Affected by Coyote Urine?

If you’re trying to ward off animals from visiting your yard, coyote urine can usually deter common coyote prey like rodents, raccoons, rabbits, and cats.

It can also deter white-tailed deer, which are occasionally preyed upon by coyotes. But it’s not a surefire way of getting rid of deer, who will munch on plants regardless of urine scent if they’re really hungry.

Results with deer also depend on if they are used to having coyotes around as predators. In some areas, coyotes have easier prey to catch and rarely go after deer. Deer in these areas will likely not be scared of coyote urine."

  3. Went over to the #CommunityGarden today (planting more sunflowers, beans, squash and onions), and was delighted to see that the #PlantSwap has started! I picked up a couple of #Blueberry plants and will be leaving some #SunGoldTomato plants for others!

  4. Spent some time at the #CommunityGarden today. Planted some #BlackBeans and #Potatoes, and pulled up some weeds (the flowers should be popping up after all that rain). Had a cool conversation with my neighbor who is a selectboard member and who helped get the garden going again, and told him what a great job he is doing. I mean, #composters, #rainbarrels, making the #CommunityCenter an #EmergencyShelter, supporting #DatacenterMoratoriums and #SmartGrowth. What more could one ask for in a town rep!

  7. This photo was sent to me via text.
It's from my friend, Jeff, whom I originally met off of Mastodon, back in 2022. We met in person in 2023 & exchanged plants🪴We've stayed friends over the years. We are working towards similar community building goals, in separate areas of the island. Ideally, would love to have a full food security, localized food systems 'spine', running West-East/South-North, across #VancouverIsland.
Jeff lives up island with his wife & kids. He also works in #nonprofit #FoodSecurity & #environmental #stewardship. He works for #Greenways #LandTrust in #CampbellRiver :
    greenwaystrust.ca/projects/foo

This shows some of the work they've done at Maple Park Community Garden in partnership with #Strathcona Regional District. They acquired that land to steward/grow, earlier this year 💚👩‍🌾👨‍🌾👏

  8. An excellent resource from #EcoMaine!

    #FoodWaste and #Composting

"Did you know that almost a third of what we throw away is leftover or spoiled food? If Maine is to achieve a 50% recycling rate, we need to recover our food waste, too – it’s worth the weight!

"ecomaine added food waste recycling to our sustainable waste management solutions in order to help Maine reach its recycling goal. We continue to build food waste recycling capacity in southern Maine, serving as a central collection point for grocery stores, institutions, and participating cities and towns.

"Collected food waste is transported to #ExeterME’s #AgriEnergy [#AgricycleEnergy] to be de-packaged and anaerobically digested to produce sustainable power, organic farm #fertilizer, and cow bedding for the #Maine family dairy farm #StonyvaleFarm. Any packaging removed from the food waste is delivered back to ecomaine to be burned for energy—keeping all of it out of our #landfills!

"By making #composting, anaerobic digestion, and food waste recycling so easy, we encourage our communities to dispose of their waste responsibly.

"For more on compost that’s 'Worth The Weight,' check out our informational pamphlet!

    #BackyardComposting

"Backyard composting is one of the easiest ways to keep organic material out of the trash. It also has some other great advantages:

    - It doesn’t weigh your trash down as much.
    - It doesn’t get into ecomaine‘s waste-to-energy plant, making our combustion more damp and less efficient.
    - It’s easy – and “grass-cycling” (leaving clippings on the lawn) is better for your grass!
    - It saves Maine’s towns money on collection and hauling.
    - And it saves YOU money on trash bags!

"There are no trucks or driving involved – no carbon emissions! You just walk it out to your bin, and that’s it.

"In the end, composting produces rich #soil for flower and vegetable #gardens – without paying for it (again) at the store.

    Drop Off Locations

"If you’re looking for a compost drop-off location, instead of putting it in your backyard, here are a few… If you know of one that’s not here, let us know! (Some facilities may be for residents only; we advise calling ahead if you’re not sure.)

  9. Today at the community garden, a fellow gardener told us that she carefully moved the cottontail nest (with babies) in her plot to right outside in a plastic pot. Please pray for the poor cottontail mom who now has to find her babies and move them to a safer place.

We also have a cottontail nest in our plot. We just let them use our plot as a safe nursery. They’ve been nesting in our plot every year, we know the drill. We run a #humaneGarden.

  10. Rex Welland was a longtime local resident who loved collecting lots of #HeritageApple species. He spent a lifetime, collecting cuttings & grafting to grow in his large backyard. He donated this land, which was his backyard, as part of #LandConservancy agreement with the Town of View Royal to keep it as a heritage orchard for the community to steward & share.

    There's 125 heritage #apple species growing there.

#NativePlant in #PacificNorthwest regions. We've used this plant at several habitat/ecological restoration areas - across Southern #VancouverIsland. It is an excellent plant for riparian revegetation & pollinators love their bright pink, tiny flowers too.

#PNW #Indigenous peoples use the plant for making brooms & for hanging seafood to cook.

It grows in almost any soil conditions, even very dry & gravelly soil but prefers boggy/wet areas.

  12. Got more kale from the #communityGarden. First baby summer squashes! And PEAS!! 💚

By the way, the cottontail babies in the herb bed are doing well in the nest! (🐰🐰 🐇 I peeked. 👀🥰)

Everything is growing well. 🙏🌧️ Cucumbers have many flowers.

  13. Planted some tiny basil, cilantro and arugula seedlings in some pots in my community garden plot. Hope they don’t get eaten by little creatures that live in my plot. 😆🤞The summer squash and zucchini seedlings have visibly grown and looking healthy.

  15. Here’s my plot. It’s across from the common sitting area I tooted earlier.

I pulled some seriously invasive plants, removed dead plants and planted a cluster of rhubarbs we got from the vacated plot we helped clean. Oh! I harvested some first GarlicChive, aka Nira in Japanese. 🤗😋💚

  16. *I’m spent* #CommunityGarden common area cleanup today, and haven’t sat down since 8:30 this morning. (also went for an evening walk to minimize any physical pain, cooking now.)

Among other things, I cleaned up this little sitting area. 🤗💚✨

We found a birdbath in the vacated plot which we also clean up for the new gardener. 🕊️

A chipmunk came to inspect the area when I was done. 🐿️

  17. There was an empty mouse nest in the small brown plastic storage bench in my community garden plot. It’s been such a rainy winter, this mouse mom probably had to find a dry place.
I took the nest out and left it in the corner of the herb bed. Maybe some birds would make use of the down feathers?
Now I just need to remember to bring some vinegar to clean the inside of the thing.
