#ThreeGoodThings on a Sunday evening:

+ spent an hour in the garden and as I was filling a planter box with soil, a mole cricket fell out of the potting mix bag. We've been hearing them at night recently (even though they're probably due for hibernation soon, I reckon). I scooped it out of the planter box and put it down carefully and it started burrowing straight away. So exciting to see it :)

+ visited the community garden yesterday despite the rain. I took lemons, lilly pillies and rosemary to swap, and brought home tomatoes, garlic, basil and rhubarb

+ there was a tiny fire in the kitchen earlier... this is a Good Thing because I happened to walk in as it was starting and said, 'Ooh, that's interesting' and then set about putting it out. tl;dr the sausages spat some fat into the gas griller, the fat caught fire and then dripped down into the fat tray where it continued to burn. Bit stinky, glad I walked in when I did. I was thinking of grabbing the fire blanket but as it turned out, a saucepan lid did the trick (so I can save the fire blanket for another, bigger fire!)

In the common area of the community garden, we planted another hydrangea and two small hostas that were in my flowerbed.

It hasn’t rained in a long time, and our stored rainwater (4,000 liters) is running low.
So we’ve started mulching the beds with straw and will soon make olla irrigation pots from our terracotta pots.

Tips on making and using ollas are very welcome.

The Portland Parks Conservancy and the City of Portland are hosting a citywide cleanup event on Saturday, April 25th, from 10AM - 12PM.

"This event is happening rain or shine!

Join us in cleaning up our local parks and communities, enjoy refreshments, and be entered to win a raffle prize by attending and helping clean up trash & litter!

Calling volunteers! Come join us for a fun morning of giving back and helping Portland shine! We’ll have all the supplies you need.

Just bring comfy clothes, closed-toe shoes, and don’t forget water and sunscreen. Enjoy free coffee and snacks while you volunteer, and when you fill out the waiver, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a raffle prize 🎉

*No need to sign up to volunteer, just show up at one of the following clean-up hub locations.
