My email to my neighbor, fellow community gardener, and selectboard member:

"Hi ____,

So, I was locked out of Facebook, so I can't communicate with the group. But if you could, please pass on my message...

On at least two occasions pretty recently, I found the gate open at the Community Garden. What I suspect happened is that the local deer saw that the gate was open and helped themselves to the pumpkins (judging by the tracks).

After getting a taste, I have a feeling that now they are jumping the fence, or somehow getting through the front gate (in between the wires).

I went around and set up white cloth tags soaked in coyote urine, and also sprayed all the wooden stakes. I'm not sure if those will be a deterrent, but I figured I'd try.

I think what needs to happen long term is more string "fences" need to be set-up on the inside of the fence, to help baffle the deer (3-D fencing). Or maybe some mesh fencing (which would be more expensive).

Anyhow, I'll plan on refreshing the tags if they work, and maybe someone could remind folks to make sure the fence is closed when they are done?

So, whether #Coyote pee will work as a #DeerDeterrent depends on whether the local coyotes hunt the local deer. Where I live, that is the case, so I'm going to try some fabric dunked in #CoyoteUrine and tied in strategic spots to see if that works against the #Deer in the #CommunityGarden . I think long-term, we need to put in a 3-D fence, which I'll post about in a bit. Judging by the tracks I saw in the pumpkin patch, it definitely looked like someone jumped over the fence (and the fence was a bit lower in one spot).

Met more "plot neighbors" today at the #CommunityGarden (they have the plot across from mine.) We talked about tomatoes (which they were planting), and I mentioned how chickens (and birds) love hornworms. And they just happened to have chickens! Cool!

So, my makeshift garden gate door needs some support. I did an inventory of hardware, and I need a few parts, so off to the local hardware store. Then a quick jaunt to "Apple Blossom Hill" for a recharge and photos, and some #CommunityGarden time on the way back. And bonus -- I get to play with my recently acquired wood mitre box (none of that plastic shit) and Japanese hand saws! Psyched!

#RockportME - #Midcoast nonprofits team up to preserve historic #farmland — and build new #housing

"Two midcoast nonprofits are teaming up to preserve a historic dairy farm in Rockport — and build new affordable housing on site.

#MaineCoastHeritageTrust has owned more than 160 acres south of Route 90 for the last 15 years. The #EricksonFieldsPreserve has #WalkingTrails and a #CommunityGarden, where students have learned to grow produce for nearby #FoodBanks.

Recently, the Heritage Trust secured the farm's remaining six acres across the street, where the old farmhouse and dairy barn are located.

When a family member living in the farmhouse passed away a few years ago, Aaron Englander with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust said the nonprofit began to think about how the property could be preserved for community benefit.

Housing, Englander said, emerged as a clear need. The Heritage Trust acquired the six-acre property and plans to preserve five of them. It has donated the remaining acre to the #MidCoastRegionalHousingTrust, which plans to develop one and two-bedroom apartments.

The housing shortage is being felt throughout the region, said Jonathan Goss, president of the housing trust. Knox County needs nearly 1,300 new homes by the end of the decade.

'Services are being cut back or being lost because of a lack of employees,' he said. 'Everybody knows someone who either grew up here or had been living here who is not able to live here any longer.'

The housing trust plans to renovate the old farmhouse on site for rental housing first, and then construct eight new apartments for working families there later on. Goss said these are families with teachers, public safety officers, nurses and others who earn too much to qualify for subsidized housing, but not enough to afford a median-priced home in the region, which now surpasses $450,000.

Housing development is sometimes pitted against land and environmental conservation efforts. But Englander with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust said this project could serve as a statewide model for balancing those interests.

'[This can] show people that yes, you can conserve wildlife habitat, you can conserve farmland, soils and agricultural know-how, and you can create access to public lands and outdoor educational spaces all in one property,' he said."

Sometimes I mention "my" garden, but really it's a #CommunityGarden I share with about 20 other people.

A few years ago, this small lot had an old house that was in very bad shape. It was sold and the buyer intended to build a new one as an investment rental. But for some reason the construction was delayed and it was left as an empty lot after the sale and demolition.

Some neighbors got together and approached the owner, asking if they could turn the lot into a community garden. They made fences and beds out of recycled material like pallets and decking. They planted fruit vines and trees for everyone to share. The local food bank agreed to pay the water bill.

10 or so years later, here we are! Every year we don't know if this will be the last one, the owner will finally need to start building. It could end at any minute.

I wish that cities would plot more gardens or that it was easier to establish them on private property. I love guerilla gardening but it's hard to grow vegetables that way in this climate (you have to water them in summer) and you miss out on the community part.

I think the ideal housing pattern is small apartment buildings (4-20 units, up to 3 floors tall) #missingmiddle with shared gardens. This maximizes the useful space and minimizes wasted space for everyone. You could do this retroactively by converting parking lots into gardens and allowing residential infill to densify neighborhoods. #urbanplanning #urbanism
