"Your #FoodScraps could be used to help support the Everglades through a new partnership between the village of #PinecrestFL and the #MiccosukeeTribe.
"Instead of dumping #FoodWaste into crowded #landfills, which produce #methane emissions, the #EvergladesEarthCycleProject will expand Pinecrest's residential composting program and deliver nutrient-rich soil to the #Miccosukee Tribe.
"Driving the news: The project, funded with a $400,000 federal grant and other contributions, calls for installing four new #CompostingBins in Pinecrest and three around #MiamiDade County District 7.
"The initial phase of the program will supply compost to the #SwampyMeadows #CommunityGarden, which grows vegetables just outside the Miccosukee Indian School.
"Another proposal that's been floated is adding new soil to the Everglades' tree islands, though that would need tribal approval, says the Rev. Houston R. Cypress of the #LoveTheEverglades Movement, a partner in the program.
"Cypress told reporters on an airboat ride through the Everglades last week that the tribe teaches 'the essence of being in harmony with nature is giving back to it.'
"'With the Everglades Earth Cycle Project, we're giving back clean and healthy soil; we're giving products that might eventually improve the water quality out here, but we're also giving directly back to local indigenous communities here,' he said.
"Pinecrest already has two free public composting bins, one at the Pinecrest Public Library and another between the Community Center and Pinecrest Gardens."

I met two more plot neighbors at the #CommunityGarden today, and harvested some new potatoes. I have one more potato plant left there (that's not ready for harvesting but close), and more in containers at my #HomeGarden. Leaving the dirt on the harvested potatoes, and storing them for a week or two before we eat them. I may plant some more in the community garden and might be able to get a second harvest before the season is over.

Meanwhile, at the #CommunityGarden, the one remaining #MammothSunflower towers over the #Zinnias, #Cosmos, #Squash, #Beans, #Potatoes and a few other miscellaneous flowers and veggies I planted. It was nice to have an "overflow" for plants, even if it means the seeds will be hybrids. Anything I want to collect seed from, I'm growing at home. Next year, I'll only plant veggies in half of the garden, and will plant buckwheat and clover in the remaining half, then do the same with the veggie plot the year after that.

Update: Old composter has been emptied! I have a 5 gallon bucket full of nice, loose, brown soil (vermicultured, not thermophilic) that I'll use to amend my gardens (I brought a small amount to my community garden plot today). Back is still a bit grumpy, so the 5 gallon bucket is staying in place for another day.

Spent some time at the #CommunityGarden. I planted a couple of sunflowers (Mammoth type) and some butternut squash seedlings (since I decided to focus on summer squash and cukes in my home garden). The black beans were a little beat up from the stormy weather, but the potato plants are loving all the extra space (I moved them from containers) and rain.
Some of the flowers (Indian Blanket and Cornflower) are starting to come up. Grabbed some manure from the pile for my home compost pile (and yes, there's plenty to go around and I checked with the garden organizer).
The water tank has been filled up, so now I can bike over to weed and water (and just drive over when I have stuff to transport). I had thought about hooking up a metal grocery cart to my bike, but I'll have to look into the best way to do that. No pics because I left the phone at home. No neighbors today (but it's been drizzly). A little rain never stopped me from puttering around in the garden! 🌧️

Well, it looks like I don't have to water my plot at the #CommunityGarden for a few days. Luckily, I only planted black beans, yellow onions and some flowers (Indian Paintbrush and Blue Cornflower), but not the sunflowers. The sunflowers I planted in the #HomeGarden (and were staked up before the storm) survived, but I might have to plant more squash (mildew). The beans and corn are doing okay (the corn likes some moisture early on). We'll see what survives. Wildflower patch is doing well, and there's some Hen of the Woods action going on at one of our tree stumps (one good thing about rainy weather).

Published November 29, 2025 at 8:31 AM EST"Two midcoast nonprofits are teaming up to preserve a historic dairy farm in Rockport — and build new affordable housing on site.
#MaineCoastHeritageTrust has owned more than 160 acres south of Route 90 for the last 15 years. The #EricksonFieldsPreserve has #WalkingTrails and a #CommunityGarden, where students have learned to grow produce for nearby #FoodBanks.
Recently, the Heritage Trust secured the farm's remaining six acres across the street, where the old farmhouse and dairy barn are located.
When a family member living in the farmhouse passed away a few years ago, Aaron Englander with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust said the nonprofit began to think about how the property could be preserved for community benefit.
Housing, Englander said, emerged as a clear need. The Heritage Trust acquired the six-acre property and plans to preserve five of them. It has donated the remaining acre to the #MidCoastRegionalHousingTrust, which plans to develop one and two-bedroom apartments.
The housing shortage is being felt throughout the region, said Jonathan Goss, president of the housing trust. Knox County needs nearly 1,300 new homes by the end of the decade.
'Services are being cut back or being lost because of a lack of employees,' he said. 'Everybody knows someone who either grew up here or had been living here who is not able to live here any longer.'
The housing trust plans to renovate the old farmhouse on site for rental housing first, and then construct eight new apartments for working families there later on. Goss said these are families with teachers, public safety officers, nurses and others who earn too much to qualify for subsidized housing, but not enough to afford a median-priced home in the region, which now surpasses $450,000.
Housing development is sometimes pitted against land and environmental conservation efforts. But Englander with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust said this project could serve as a statewide model for balancing those interests.
'[This can] show people that yes, you can conserve wildlife habitat, you can conserve farmland, soils and agricultural know-how, and you can create access to public lands and outdoor educational spaces all in one property,' he said."

...not for good reasons though. Wish this would stop happening every year. Glad we're finally getting some coverage of it though; you'd think after the arson last year there would've been at least some attention.
