  1. Proving (again) that #Trump is #AntiSolarPunk ! Wow!!!

Do #DEI #BikePaths Exist? The Trump Administration Says Yes.

The administration has revoked funding for #BikePaths, and encouraged removing some. A cycling advocate said it is playing on the idea of “that dork on a bike.”

Excerpt: "As it is, many American communities, regardless of politics, have embraced #BikeFriendly policies, on the grounds that bikes are good for the planet, for the body, and address congestion by taking cars off the road.

"Often inspired by bike-friendly European cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, the moves are a major shift in the way American communities approach transportation planning.

"There are now 4,400 directional miles of protected bike lanes today, up from 108 directional miles in 2000, according to #PeopleForBikes , an industry trade association and advocacy group. (Directional miles are miles that can be traveled in one direction; with a two-way bike lane one mile long counting as two directional miles.)

"The group notes that more than 25,000 miles of #RailBeds have been converted to bike-friendly trails, double what it was two decades ago.

"But the Trump administration is trying to put the brakes on the trend.

In #NashvilleTN, the future of an ambitious series of bike lanes, called the #EastNashvilleSpokes project, is up in the air after the Trump administration froze a $9.3 million grant, prompting a court battle that remains unresolved."

  2. This is so cool!!! #CapeCharlesVA - New bike shop set to open along #EasternShoreRailTrail in Cape Charles

This will be one of the first businesses built with the new #RailTrail top of mind.

By: Conor Hollingsworth, Aug 06, 2026

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — "As construction on the Eastern Shore Rail Trail nears completion, a new business is preparing to help residents and visitors take advantage of the region's newest outdoor attraction.

"The trail, which is expected to be finished by the end of the month, has already inspired local entrepreneur Gordon Campbell to open #BlackDuckCyclery, a bike and e-bike rental shop designed to serve trail users.

" 'To me it was just a natural fit for the tourism atmosphere that we have here in Cape Charles,' Campbell said.

"Campbell, who already owns several businesses on Virginia's Eastern Shore, said Black Duck Cyclery will offer bike and e-bike rentals, sales and repair services. He hopes to eventually expand the shop's repair offerings so riders can bring in their own bicycles for maintenance.

" 'We'll have rental sales and repair services,' Campbell said. 'Eventually we'll work our way up to anybody could bring in a bike and get it repaired.' "

  4. ‘The gap is gone!’ New stretch of #EasternTrail opens 15 months early

The 1.6-mile segment of the Eastern Trail linking #ScarboroughME and #SouthPortlandME opened Thursday.

by Salomé Cloteaux, August 7, 2026

SOUTH PORTLAND — "Finally, the gap is closed. After over a decade of planning, setbacks, fundraising and permitting, the 'Close the Gap' project opening a key segment of the Eastern Trail is finished, 15 months ahead of schedule.
The 1.6-mile section of the Eastern Trail connecting Scarborough and South Portland opened Thursday in front of a few hundred cyclists, walkers and runners who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Closing the gap — between the Wainwright Sports Complex in South Portland and the Nonesuch River in Scarborough — created a continuous 16-mile trail without on-road gaps from Bug Light Park to downtown Saco. It was a long-awaited step to fully connecting the #EasternTrail, a 65-mile off-road trail from South Portland to #KitteryME.

" 'It’s also about more than just opening a section of trail; it’s about connecting communities and fulfilling a vision that has been years in the making,' South Portland Mayor Elyse Tipton said. “The gap is gone!' "

  5. So, the news isn't all doom and gloom... The #SouthPortlandME to #SacoME portion of #EasternTrail is about to be completed (August 6th is the date). That means folks can walk / bike from #BugLight in South Portland, ME to #KitteryME! Wow!

Eastern Trail "Close the Gap" Project

"The Eastern Trail is a vital multi-use trail of state-wide significance in Maine. The trail extends 65 miles from South Portland to #KitteryME, and travels by scenic #woods, #TidalMarshes, and classic #MaineVillages. Since its Scarborough developments from 2004-2006, the trail has provided millions of people with a recreational and transportation resource that connects them to the beautiful Maine landscape.

"A key piece of trail is missing in Scarborough. A 1.6-mile 'gap' interrupts off-road travel between South Portland and Saco. The construction of this critical trail segment will close this gap and provide 16 continuous off-road miles reaching from South Portland’s Bug Light to Downtown Saco. The cost to close this gap is $7.1 million dollars. Funding was sourced from the Town of Scarborough, City of South Portland, Maine Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and #EasternTrailAlliance individual and corporate donors.

"After several years of work to raise the necessary funds, complete the project design, align stakeholders, and acquire the necessary permits and land rights, the project went out to bid in Spring 2025 and construction began in June."

  6. Now, if they could build some bike trails between town hall, the sports center, and the proposed economic development area (which is what used to be the town center, but now has empty buildings, which is on a major road, which used to be the old railroad) -- that would be good! As I've mentioned many times, (and as my selectboard neighbor emphasized), it's not safe to bike on the local roads (especially because of speeders and distracted drivers), and folks that ride bicycles should have places to safely ride and get from one place to another!
