Opening a Family Justice Center here in Thousand Oaks is important and welcome news for the safety of residents here and throughout eastern Ventura County.
A Family Justice Center provides a safe space for the victims of domestic violence, elder and child abuse, human trafficking, and hate crimes. It not only provides safety but also saves victims from having to travel back and forth to Ventura multiple times to seek justice.
The City of Thousand Oaks is a proud partner with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office in establishing this first Family Justice Center in the east county.
I'm also grateful to California Lutheran University, which will host the center and for the work of the Ventura County Family Justice Center Foundation in supporting victims.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents is Job One in local government. While crime overall is down, domestic violence in particular remains a stubborn blight that persists across all socioeconomic lines.
This center helps address that. This helps make residents safer.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (#AJC) in #Atlanta: This murder-by-car of a human (I'm not going to use the bullshit passive voice and "pedestrian" on this one) was completely avoidable.

How so?
There used to be a "shared street" setup on Peachtree Street in Atlanta where the outer lanes of the street were converted to an outdoor sitting area, and the road section for cars was a single-lane in each direction. Traffic slowed down, and the area was more safe for all street users.
But, alas, the property owner of the surrounding buildings and the hotel nearby pitched a fit, claiming various bs excuses like "it took more time to get to the interstate" and "ambulances will be delayed" and so on.
Then, that property owner (Bowers) used his money/power/influence in the General Assembly (Georgia's state legislature) to threaten to ban any future "complete streets" if the shared street wasn't torn down. He bullied the mayor into doing it, and the rest is history.
Source: I helped lead a protest against the tearing down of the shared street. It was awesome, inspiring, and ultimately made no f-ing difference apparently.
And now a man is dead because some asshole property owner thought, rather ironically, that an ambulance would get stuck to pick up a patient. Oh, and he may be a few minutes late getting home.
Kudos to the AJC for reminding people of the history of this.

CW: Warning: fatal bike collision
A few days ago, a 15 year old was killed in a collision with a van in Bend, Oregon, while riding an #ebike.
Disappointingly and predictably, people are harping how dangerous ebikes are, and that the rider wasn't wearing a helmet.
My first thought was, "wait a minute, do we know whether the ebike motor or lack of helmet had anything to do with the poor kid's death?" Pedestrians and (non electric) cyclists are killed by vehicle every day in America. This felt like victim blaming and pearl clutching over new technology, avoiding discussion of the real problem (#FuckCars!).
Turns out, I'm right...

"Folks need to spend less time pointing fingers and more time in front of a mirror. I’m hearing a lot of people demand “more education!”, “more enforcement!”, “more laws!” Those are lazy responses because they put the onus on someone else to do something. If we want to make streets safe for everyone, we must reflect on our own behaviors.
