  2. "It is not possible to prioritize everyone.

Every decision has tradeoffs, and it’s clear who those choices prioritize when you consider the comfort, ease, and safety of different users. When it’s faster, easier, safer, and more comfortable to get somewhere by driving, we are prioritizing driving." --Anna Zivarts

  7. Seattle DOT director Greg Spotts notes the need to think about streets along the edge of a park and whether they support the park's purpose. By turning a fast, noisy slip lane that slingshots drivers into Green Lake into a barrier-protected 2-way bike lane, the change reduced noise and the traffic effect of SR99 at that spot. Much more parklike.

  8. Yesterday and today I'm on a tour for state legislators highlighting the Safe System Approach. We're in Seattle looking at the protected 2-way bike lane on Green Lake that repurposed a parking lane. One segment converted a 2-way street to 1-way, which eliminated drivers blasting through here like it's a racetrack. Includes a segment on SR99 that closes a gap.

  12. October 10 deadline.

California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike wants input from all 58 CA counties. Especially needed: feedback from people who bike or walk in #Fresno, #Kern, #SanBernardino, #SanJoaquin, #Solano, #Tulare, and #Ventura counties.

"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.

"CalBike is seeking input from people who use these local streets to help create a report on the safety of Caltrans-controlled #roadways. Please fill out CalBike's survey." form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalit

  13. I'm reviewing older studies and thought I'd share this one from Charlotte, NC.

Incorporating #CompleteStreets elements into road project adds a little to the costs, but overall fluctuations in construction costs dwarf those. doi.org/10.3141/2393-15

  14. Florida's #CompleteStreets guidance tells road designers how to translate context into target speeds, including transitions through rural town centers.

It also tells local governments what their built environment should look like.

  15. On Twitter, @boenau points out the AASHTO Green Book is more flexible than some road designers seem to think. twitter.com/Boenau/status/1661

    But a 2010 article found:

30 states require wider lanes than in the Green Book.

9 require a larger minimum turning radius.

12 require design speeds 5-10mph above the speed limit. t.co/kRBLdd5hYZ

Chicago reached a deal with the IDOT to use design vehicles smaller than 65'. illinois.gov/news/press-releas
