First salad of the year from garden greens: trimmings from the chard and buttercrunch lettuce just picked up at the nursery, homegrown parsley and sorrel.
Now the trimmed seedlings will be a bit less unwieldy to transplant.

For some reason I've been up since 4.30. By 6am I was at the allotment. I got the rest of my strawberries in, sow some more seeds and got started on clearing another plot-holder's site because they've damaged their back and aren't able to do it. I didn't see a soul, just birds and cats and was home by 11am. It's early in the season and it's small patch of ground but it already means so much to me to have it to go to

Spring rain, pattering steadily on the dry earth outside.
Tomorrow more is forecast.
The rain will make the grass in the garden, which is green but not growing much erupt into a carpet of spring vegetation. Flowers will follow.
Maybe the rain will be enough to convince the reluctant aspen trees huddled together in a copse to produce some leaves.
They are always the last of the trees in the garden to heed the call of spring.

All the cucumbers, melons, squash, and 1 runner bean are up. I thinned everything to 2. When the first cucumber sprouted I looked at the bottom of the pot by chance and noticed there was already a root poking out! The hibiscus has another flower ready to open, the other fell off the same day I noticed it so I guess I missed it for a day or two.

We'll be open 9-5 Tuesday-Sunday, closed Mondays.
Pics are from today! The plants are looking great, but most of them are not yet big enough to definitively show their sex. They're (almost) all grown from feminized seeds, so will be 99+% female. If you want to get an early start or want to be sure a particular variety doesn't sell out, we've got lots of plants. If you're not in a hurry or aren't picky about flavors, give them a week or so.

Made it to the allotment today to put the first plants in the ground. The sun was warm, the birds were chirping happily away, and the time passed peacefully. I even got to harvest some sage and the first 500g of rhubarb for tomorrow's dinner.

Little update from my windowsill 🌿
I painted these terracotta pots and planted herbs in them, a small, slow, satisfying project that's been brightening up my space every morning.
There's something really grounding about tending to plants you also cook with. Highly recommend the combo of painted pot + fresh herbs as a form of self-care tbh.

This year I decided to try overwintering my pepper plants .. I trimmed them way down, and they have been happily growing and budding, and now there’s tiny peppers. Like really tiny. They seem to be ripening, but remain very small. I just ate one, and it tasted fine.
Will this start producing normal sized fruit or is it forever stunted?

Garlic and rhubarb. Soft neck California Heirloom, aka whatever is in the bag you buy garlic. This raised bed is for winter squash, which will only be butternut this year because I'm tired of acorn squash that taste bad and/or don't store good. Too many made up name squash seeds out there from seed sellers that are just repacking the same bulk seed junk as everyone else.
