sign it's been a bit of a long week: when you're shelling broad beans and you suddenly get moved to tears by the sheer perfection of these velvety pods, these pristine beans, and how fucking amazing it is that all this grew from a single tiny speck.
highly recommend growing your own for a reliable way of getting your mind blown every dinner time (for a least a few months a year!)

Just off to do a quick trip to the #allotment to run irrigation hoses for a while. These are keeping fennel, beetroot and parsnip seedlings alive.
Not much water left in the tank....

It's getting hard to keep up with the tomatoes right now, so we had another tote-full to share. Also what's probably the last of the yellow squash & zucchini. The onions are curing nicely, too. We're pretty well in to the 2nd corn planting now & the ears are more mature than I'd prefer, but still plenty tasty. My 20-yr-old self would have been able to have finished off the whole 2nd planting by now, but that was a loooong time ago.😀 🌽

back from picking bits and bobs at the allotment and realising that if i was relying on it for survival i'd be in some serious trouble. like, i'd probably go hungry for most of the year, and courgettes would make up my number 1 food-group
still, loads of bees tonight, a happy frog in amongst the fennel, and a tonne of waterboatmen in the pond

It's very satisfying making our own compost. But it is a labour of love. All three sections dug out and either moved onto a vegetable bed, or into the next container moving right to left. Yr1, Yr2, Yr3.

Got out and did some more picking this morning and set out some more surplus for the passers-by. Found a very lovely note in the box later. Made my whole summer. There must be smoke in the air again, my eyes are all runny again.

I grew these French Bean 'Celine' because they looked attractive. Past experience suggested purple beans changed to green on cooking and might be quite tasty. These were a disappointment having a tougher skin and a rather bland interior, they remained a rather washed out pink. The funny part was a granddaughter named them 'Witches Fingers'! #growyourown #allotment

Suddenly I'm wondering if this will be a new #allotment crop for us in the UK? I suspect #ClimateChange will make our seasonal weather swings too extreme though. 🤔😟

I picked about half the row of regular-sized tomatoes which filled a tote & filled a small basket with cherry tomatoes from one of the two plants. Put out today's surplus for the neighbors again. 😀 🍅

Look what I found at the #allotment hiding under the leaves! 🤩 Just as I was about to write off this year as a failure for squashes, the Zucchetta Tromba d'Albenga sprang into action! First time with this, can't wait to try! Now will the other plants follow suit? 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Back from a hot and tiring #allotment session.
We both tried to drink more than usual. But it was still a bit of a chore.
I've got a clear vision of how the path around the new pond is going to work. The camera shows that the pond is getting visits from foxes, cats and birds. Put a water lily in the pond.Shifted the last compost bin from the second plot to its new position and that gave the existing compost a good mix.
Got all the waste from the woodchip that was on the weed fabric onto a couple of the fallow beds and covered it with cardboard.
Lots of watering!
We came home with greengages, a few windfall apples, blackberries and some tomatoes.
I've slathered my chest with ibuprofen gel in an attempt to ease the discomfort and I've taken paracetamol for my back.
I now need a shower and a nap. -

Today's harvest: Sorrel, yellow, white, and purple carrots, Coeur de Boeuf tomatoes, Chioggia and red beets, cherry tomatoes, Shanghai bok choy, raspberries, zucchini, and San Marzano tomatoes. Should be enough for the weekend.
