It was hard work battling bindweed amongst the raspberry canes today, but there's plenty to stop and enjoy too. The sweet peas are budding and the roses are in full bloom. #allotment

It's not always ALL about the veg. around here. Here's a look at what's in flower right now. The clematis is a volunteer, so no idea about the variety. Peony plants are ancient and been around here since I was a kid, but I moved some of them to this spot a few years ago. The Helen Mount violas are having a very good year. They escaped their planter from last year and decided they like to live under the Peonies.

Maybe I live a sheltered life but I met my first full blown nazi today (and I don't use that term lightly).
The Community Payback naughty boys were at our allotment site today clearing the paths - which they do every so often.
As many of you will know, it's been seriously hot and sunny today in central England.
I took a few cans of Coke & Sprite to the men on the team - and they were extremely grateful (there were probably drinks back at their van).I got a complete mouthful from another allotment plot holder who was of the (very strong) opinion that they were there to work, not to be drinking my cans, and being 'criminals' didn't deserve to be given anything by 'us'
I tried to reason with him but he wouldn't even concede that they were human like the rest of us ......
Which I found truly frightening.They walk among us.

The promised cold front has started to move through this afternoon and the temp. is already down to 72F / 22C with cooler temps coming overnight. A light shower just came through to freshen things up and leave us a faint rainbow just as sun is getting lower in the west. More rain tonight (not too stormy, I hope). Nice to cool off!

It’s good to see the bees have been and are busy. The main bee hotel is almost full.
Various bumblebees and solitary bees have been pollinating the available flowers on the plot this afternoon. From field and broad beans, comfrey, alliums, soft fruit and flowers. #Gardening #Pollinators #Bees #Allotment

Greenhouse update: We got the okra started today, (Had to eat a lot of Lemon-ice to get the pots to recycle!). Also the corn is sprouting (5 days) and the cucumbers and squash are starting to appear (4 days). Won't be long before stuff can go out into the ground. Busy times! Had a samara from a silver maple (Acer saccharinum) blow in from somewhere. Sent it on it's way. Don't need it growing with the squash.

Got out just as the sun was coming up so I could get the eggplant (Aubergine) set out at last. Temp. topped out at 93F / 34C today, so I'm glad we got it done early. I DID remember to include some of the "cripples" from the problem I had earlier with the first planting having a "withering" of the growing tip in the seed trays. They now look just as healthy as the replacement plantings so we will see how things develop. Rest of garden looks ok.

Now the rest will get mulched if and when material becomes available over the next few weeks. While I did that, BeetBear tended to his beloved beet root crop, which looks pretty good so far!
