With all this squash harvesting going on, it was time to start sharing with the neighbors. We're setting aside quite a few for ourselves and passing on the surplus. Between yesterday and today we shared out about 180. We'll get a grand total of the overall harvest as soon as I'm done picking, but it looks like we may top 300 this year. We'll keep you posted.

And we have twins! Every once-in-a-while we get two that fuse together. I'll not comment on what it might resemble...

And to complete the cycle, we remove all the vines and chop up the weeds and haul them off to the compost pile. We will them reset the marker line down 3 or 4 feet and start the process again. Just hope the dry weather holds for a few more days.

The allotment at the weekend, looking quite autumnal now. We had some rain but not enough to make much of a difference for the trees, but at least the shallower-rooted plants such as the asters have recovered and are starting to flower now. There is also some devils-bit scabious (Succisa pratensis) still in flower, a pretty native plant which is great for pollinators. #allotment #autumn

I can't remember where I got this information, but I heard that it's best to leave as much of the stem as possible when harvesting winter squashes. Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage. BTW, this is a mini variety of butternut called "Butter Baby". We like them.

Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage. BTW, this is a mini variety of butternut called "Butter Baby". We like them.
