  1. The Iran war is no longer just about oil.

Hormuz disruption now threatens Gulf desalination, global fertiliser flows, shipping, food prices and the infrastructure keeping entire cities alive.

The water war has begun—and the food shock may arrive months later.

We need your help to secure more land for the Byerima communities. More land means more food for hungry families and space to create an Environmental & Food Production Training Centre, where people can learn sustainable farming and protect the environment. Every donation brings us closer. Please donate or share.

  5. 🌧️ Hope has returned! After weeks of severe drought that left many of our crops dry and others completely destroyed, we were blessed with rain last night. Our fields now have a chance to recover, bringing renewed hope for a good harvest. We pray this marks the beginning of reduced hunger and malnutrition in our community. Thank you for your prayers and support.

[Flash floods? not TOO hard to conceptualise.
Flash drought? harder to 'get my head around', but H/T / presenter does an excellent job!]
"Not all droughts are the same. In some cases, drought rapidly intensifies at subseasonal to seasonal scales with significant impacts to agriculture and water resources along with the increased propensity for heatwaves and wildfires. Like all droughts, flash drought begins with a precipitation deficit. However, both evaporative demand and soil moisture are critical flash drought variables, and identifying and monitoring the desiccation of the terrestrial surface is key for determining flash drought development and associated impacts. While recent advances in knowledge and monitoring of flash drought have occurred, fundamental questions remain in the state of the science. What are the overall mechanistic relationships between atmospheric demand, evaporative stress, terrestrial desiccation, and precipitation that drive the progression of flash drought? Do regional characteristics of the environment impact the evolution of flash drought? What are the scales of predictability for flash drought? Finally, how will flash drought frequency and intensity evolve in a changing climate system"

"Flash drought intensifies rapidly due to changes in precipitation, temperature, wind, and radiation. These changes in the weather increase evapotranspiration and lower soil moisture. Flash droughts can cause extensive damage to agriculture, economies, and ecosystems if they are not predicted and discovered early..."

  11. The July newsletter for paid subscribers is going to be an introduction to going zero-waste: what that means, some considerations for doing it, and why you want to keep food out of the landfill.

Now, none of this seems very groundbreaking, perhaps, but I'm going to get into some of the deeper considerations of not just "what" to compost, but how to even go further and truly utilize everything to fill further needs in your own environment. As always, we're going to take our specific experience as a case study and offer some considerations for what might work even better for *you* in your specific situation.

We're lucky enough to have had a significant amount of support come through from all of you, and to be steadily building some potential income streams here. However, we are no longer operating with a corporate job at all, so newsletter subscriptions, direct sales of our products, and tattoo bookings *are* what's keeping us going right now. So if you have $5, consider bumping up your free subscription to a paid one and helping us maintain an almost completely closed-loop farm and continue educating folks in a resource-stressed region how to better utilize resources and give back to the land while feeding themselves and surviving our harsh climate.

This *is* the work that needs to be done right now.

I look forward to getting this one out for you all! And thank you very much for your continued support.
