  1. [G]lobal Decline In Endorheic Basin Water Storages

“Endorheic (hydrologically landlocked) basins spatially concur with arid/semi-arid climates. Given limited precipitation but high potential evaporation, their water storage is vulnerable to subtle flux perturbations, which are exacerbated by global warming and human activities. Increasing regional evidence suggests a probably recent net decline in endorheic water storage, but this remains unquantified at a global scale. By integrating satellite observations and hydrological modelling, [they] reveal[ed] that during 2002–2016 the global endorheic system experienced a widespread water loss of about 106.3 Gt/yr, attributed to comparable losses in surface water, soil moisture and groundwater. This decadal decline, disparate from water storage fluctuations in exorheic basins, appears less sensitive to El Niño–Southern Oscillation-driven climate variability, which implies a possible response to longer-term climate conditions and human water management. In the mass-conserved hydrosphere, such an endorheic water loss not only exacerbates local water stress, but also imposes excess water on exorheic basins, leading to a potential sea level rise that matches the contribution of nearly half of the land glacier retreat (excluding Greenland and Antarctica). Given these dual ramifications, [they] suggest the necessity for long-term monitoring of water storage variation in the global endorheic system and the inclusion of its net contribution to future sea level budgeting…”

  2. Wild Ghaap aka Hoodia gordonii
At one stage it was sold to the world as an appetite suppressant
It grows in arid regions where rainfall never exceeds 250 mm per year.
This specimen was photographed in the Tankwa Karoo National Park

  3. What's the best #desert #arid #yard ? We're not watering anything, ever. Ok, maybe the apricot tree, maybe 1/wk.

But what's a treatment that's less expensive and low or no maintenance?

  4. RE: mastodon.green/@plazi_species/

Beetles of the genus #Cheironitis (#Scarabaeinae) are characterized by a strikingly #robust #morphology in the #adults, while the larvae usually resemble cockchafer grubs. These are #dungbeetles that exhibit #broodcare. They are widespread in #arid regions of the #Palearctic and #Afrotropical regions. YuHeng Wang et al. (2025) described, i.a., the new species C. #aiweiae from #ShirenGou (Xinjiang Uygur). #Biodiversityresearch © this text #StefanFWirth

  5. A view from a footpath in the Robertson Karoo.
It is a harsh land and now in late January the temperature is > 34°C and it hasn't rained significantly since late August.
The tall plants visible in the photo are called Pigs Ears because of their succulent, broad, flat leaves.
The Pogs Ear is part of the Renosterveld biome which roughly translated means rhinoceros land or fields.

  7. Bat Eared Foxes

We were privileged to see Bat Eared Foxes in the Mountain Zebra National Park. They use those big ears to detect insects which they then dig for in the dry sand.

  8. Good morning from the Karoo National Park in the Gamka Karoo.
It is is the wet season and they expect about 30 mm in October.
In the foreground there are two Red Hartebees which are pretty much white dots in a pale green brown background
The park is home to the tourist attractions i.e. rhinos, buffalo and lions but we are here for the birds, plants and insects.

🌇 When the city comes to you, be #flexible
When you go to the city, be #persistent

Great-tailed grackles who were #trained to be more flexible used a wider variety of foods 🍿 and #foraging techniques, but had similar #habitat use patterns and #social behavior as non-trained grackles.

Given that this species is rapidly expanding its geographic #range 🗺️ and shifting more toward #urban 🏙️ and #arid 🏜️ environments in recent years, our finding could suggest that foraging breadth (the number of different food types an individual eats) is a factor in #adapting to #Human-modifiedEnvironments
