I don’t have a vegan garden (our compost is full of eggshells) but I’m trying to phase out store bought soil amendments and I don’t want to keep animals, so all of this information is helpful for me.

I really love #permaculture design, but everywhere I look I see a lot of food and almost no complete diets.
A lot of the big PDC's import food for their certification courses.
Or their farms rely on so much free labor that they likely couldn't support themselves without it.
Permaculture is to design autonomy. How can someone who isn't growing their own complete diet without free labor, teach you how to do so?

I think education about soil and systems thinking ist the most inportant achievement of the permaculture movement.
I can live with people having tiny hobby-"permaculture" gardens that look more like an abandoned, weed-infested plot than something you can feed a family with.
And it is totally ok when they get excited about their 8 kg of home-grown tomatoes. Even if they continue to buy most of their vegetables (and of course, all flour and whatever) elsewhere. At least they try. And learn. And they appreciate farming (and hopefully, farmers).
These people work against industrial farming. And when society collapses (nowadays this is more becoming a when than an if question), they'll be able to grow at least a bit of their food.
As a soil microbiologist, I am constantly in a tensed relation with some permaculture gurus without any real farming experience who sell their esoteric design courses to a public that spent their critical thinking already in fighting industrial agriculture and are easily convinced by the offer of simplistic explanations spiced with fancy words (beware of anybody saying "molecular structure" too often 🧐) and makes hyperbolic promises ("My technique increases microbial activity by 1000" or "augmented humus content by several percent in a few years").
But hey, in the end, the permaculture movement as a whole *is* in fact a motor of change towards the right direction. And they have definitely found some truth where extractivist agriculture just survived until now becase nature is surprisingly resilient and we as a society invest a huge amount of resources and technology just to maintain (kids, the times of every year strongly increasing yields are long over) agronomy's sacred grail of productivity while soil fertility is decreasing at a horrible pace. Because of unsustainable agricultural practices.
So we need to keep building the alliance between permaculture movement (or 'agroecologic' or 'regenerative agriculture' or 'biodynamic' or whatever they want to identify themselves), 'real' farmers and researchers, while transforming the food system regarding production, transformation, distribution and consumption. Because every sector of the economy matters.

These ancient forest gardens may be more relevant than ever.

"It was 1975 and Geoff Lawton was wintering with friends in Morocco. Camping on beaches north of Agadir, they’d been surfing for weeks when locals told them about Paradise Valley. Located along the Tamraght River in the High Atlas Mountains, it promised 5,200-foot vistas, blue-green waterfalls, and lush, rainforest-like vegetation.
"Lawton, then 21, was on his first trip outside the U.K. 'Tourists had yet to ‘discover’ the area, so the culture was very much preserved,' he says. 'For me, it was like going back to Biblical times.'
"The dirt road to the Valley climbed through a barren, arid landscape into rural hills studded with mud brick homes. Twenty kilometers in, the group stopped at the tiny village of Inraren for directions. Lawton went to relieve himself in a roadside wood.
" 'I remember thinking it was odd that this lush, green forest should be bursting from the desert,' he says.
"Stepping inside, things got stranger. The air felt cool, almost misty. Growing in the shade of tall date palms were trees, vines, and shrubs bearing bananas, tamarinds, oranges, figs, guavas, pomegranates, lemons, limes, mulberries, carobs, quince, grapes, and other fruits and nuts. Following a footpath through the grassy understory past groves of olive and argan trees, Lawton discovered a cluster of fenced-in vegetable and herb gardens—most about a quarter-acre in size. Here and there, goats were tethered to posts. Chickens clucked through the underbrush and roosted in trees. Gazing down a leafy corridor, he spotted a man leading a donkey. Its saddlebags brimmed with produce.
" 'I felt like I’d wandered into some kind of ancient organism,' says Lawton. “I had goosebumps all over.'
"Totaling about 65 acres, the food forest was a remnant of one of the world’s oldest #sustainable systems of agriculture. While its origins have been lost to history, scientists agree it is at least many centuries old. Some, including Lawton, date its establishment to 2,000 years ago. When asked about the forest’s age, villagers shrug.
" 'I have no idea how old it is or when our ancestors first began gardening here,' says 45-year-old Abdelmajid Ziyani, a construction worker and member of a local argan and olive oil cooperative. 'But I know it has been here for centuries.' "

Apparently chaotic gardening that is actually quite intentional:
We are digging the greywater channel deeper after adding a charcoal & rock base biofilter. This aims to reduce soil salting by minimizing water evaporation directly from the channel and forcing the water to be pulled *up* through the soil via the plant roots. Current seedlings in this basin are getting top water but when their roots can be expected to be slightly deeper they'll be left to only seek water from the saturated soil below. Initially I wanted to optimize for a proper floodplain but now I think intentionally incising the channel may be a strategy so long as matting roots can hold the bank against rains - we'll just have to see!
The squash mostly killed off by frost was pruned back, and the volunteer plants are frequently cut back and their stems used for mulch - you can see the slight mulch layer being built from vegetation in this site. The squash is trying to put on baby leaves again but the weather has been erratic so I'm fine if it just decomposes in place and doesn't come back, another round of beans, squash, and corn has been planted nearby and if the weather is conducive to getting a head start on the season we will have much more to harvest this fall.
The other side of the basin was seed blasted and is being mulched over with animal bedding and manure.
For this season this basin holds mostly cover crops sown for animal feed or milling, but when we can afford to we will be starting a series of trees in this basin to establish more permanent cover. Ultimately this will do more to avoid soil salting and nutrient loss, but for now simply establishing roots and working on soil restoration is a good start, especially where we can get a useful yield and bring down the cost to raise our animals.

"An old hockey rink in Burnsville will soon be transformed into an educational #garden under a new citywide initiative to implement #sustainable land practices and build long-term solutions to health inequities.
"The #MarketGarden, where student interns will help grow produce for local nonprofit, is one of several new programs being launched this summer under the 'Grow Burnsville' initiative.
"The City of Burnsville’s sustainability pitch won first place at this year’s Childhood Obesity Prevention and #EnvironmentalSustainability Awards held by the United States Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.
"The $125,000 prize money set 'Grow Burnsville' into motion.
"'It’s just thrilling,' said Sue Bast, the city’s environmental specialist and sustainability coordinator.
"A 'food forest' planted at Civic Center Park this spring is one of Grow Burnsville’s pilot projects, Bast said.
"Once it’s matured, the food forest will be an open food resource to anyone looking for free access to fruits and other edible plants. Using the principals of #permaculture, no chemical #pesticides or #fertilizers will be used in maintaining the forest, according to Bast.
"David Woods, the conservation program director with Urban Roots, said Burnsville’s food forest is designed to be low-maintenance.
"The city enlisted #UrbanRoots, a St. Paul-based nonprofit, to help with the design and implementation of #GrowBurnsville initiatives.
"The food forest will take 3-5 years to fully develop, according to Woods. The forest includes around 40 different plantings, such as apple, pear and plum trees, herbs and a variety of native shrubs with edible berries or nuts.
"'I’m hoping the successes that’ll come from the Burnsville project will help promote it elsewhere,' Woods said.
"'We’re going to see how this works,' Bast said. 'It could possibly be a direction we want to go with some public land that is underused.'"
