I really love #permaculture design, but everywhere I look I see a lot of food and almost no complete diets.

A lot of the big PDC's import food for their certification courses.

Or their farms rely on so much free labor that they likely couldn't support themselves without it.

Permaculture is to design autonomy. How can someone who isn't growing their own complete diet without free labor, teach you how to do so?

Wir sind eine solidarische WG in #Wien #Hietzing und wollen bald unsere Eröffnung feiern.

Bis dahin ist noch einiges zu tun. Z.B. wollen wir einen #Verein gründen, denn der Chillerplatz soll ein gemeinnütziges Projekt sein, in dem es nicht um Profit geht.
Mieten der Bewohner*innen werden an den Verein gezahlt und was nicht für Betriebskosten, Reparaturen und Allfälliges ausgegeben wird, wird durch eine gemeinsame Entscheidung ins Haus, in den Garten, in die Einrichtung oder die Bewohner*innen investiert.

Der Chillerplatz soll auch dabei helfen, die konservative Nachbarschaft solidarischer zu machen. Durch #NachbarschaftsHilfe, #MitmachProjekte, #GemeinschaftsAbende, #TauschHandel, #Workshops, #InfoVeranstaltungen, #Lesekreise etc.

Im #Garten wollen wir die #BioDiversität fördern, #RegenerativeLandwirtschaft und #PermaCulture betreiben und ihn mehr zum #NaturGarten machen.

Leider ist der Chillerplatz für Rollstuhlfahrer*innen (noch) nicht barrierefrei. Hoffentlich lässt sich das irgendwann ändern.

The Beach Plum, Prunus maritima, I bought last year has burst into bloom in the front yard during the last few days. This year I planted a second one that has only been in the ground for a couple of weeks and is not ready to bloom. Since it is said you need at least two for cross pollination in order to get beach plums, I might not have fruit this year unless there is one growing somewhere else nearby. But sometimes gardening is about waiting. I'm happy that this one has flourished.

It's not spring yet! The birds will soon be swooping in to gobble up these winterberries (Ilex verticillata) that have hung on through the winter until the time when they are most needed by wildlife. Not long ago one of "our" squirrels was in this shrub gathering a meal.

The beauty of #weeds in a young #bushregeneration planting (others may call it #rewilding).

Working in the #landcare industry, we are told that all exotic plants are bad and must be removed, while there happens to be a cozy relationship between chemical companies and the goal of recreating precolonial vegetation types (definition: putting the genie back in the bottle). It's a noble pursuit and a simple goal to achieve; weed=bad, kill weed. Note: I'm definitely not saying that some invasive weeds don't deserve all of our ire and don't require chemical control, don't get me wrong.

For the small scale, we can break vegetation types into #successional needs and suddenly they aren't all bad, an exotic herb or grass is not always the weed of a tree canopy when that's the goal we are working for, nor will the conditions be present for it to thrive when that canopied state is achieved.

Plus, look at the photos; it's a concert of life and nothing seems unhappy. A gentle management and our tree goals might get there just as fast as a spray job. Much better than dead spray circles with a chemical manufactured across the other side of the world. At least this has insects.

The #permaculture ethos of "let nature do the work" isn't wrong and one day the landcare industry may see the futility of fighting nature most of the time and that all exotics are worth destroying, naturalised is a term that's forgotten for some. Careful consideration is always needed.

The current state of my newish garden. Pardon the branded starter pots. I tend to save & reuse them, to reduce plastic waste. Only herbs at present. Not enough porch space for most winter root veggies & won't start spring seeds until January. Have a bunch of sage & basil clones off to a good start, lemongrass is coming along & finally having some success with rosemary & oregano cuttings. The mint is loving this cooler weather.
