  1. #Virginia - #ClimateChange and Its Effect on #Gardening – 2025

By Elaine Mills, Extension Master Gardener, January 22, 2025

    Climate-Conscious Gardening

"To quote David W. Wolfe, Professor of Plant & Soil Ecology at #CornellUniversity,
'We are in the unfortunate situation of being the first generation of gardeners, ever, who cannot rely on historical weather records to tell us what our climate is, or what to expect in the future.'

"Join Master Gardeners in the Arlington/Alexandria unit of Virginia #CooperativeExtension in a series of monthly articles updated from their original posting in 2021 as we explore the topic of climate change and practical actions individuals can take in their home landscapes in response. This month, we’ll present an overview."

  2. Mom & I picked our first homegrown #strawberries of 2026. Missing from photo are the 22 fruits we ate in yard, while picking them 🍓 They're really sweet & delicious. These are our native strawberries. Our June everbearing ones are about 2-3 times the size of these smaller, native strawberries. The native strawberries are smaller but their taste is much sweeter.

  3. Digesting Food Studies—Episode 112: Centralization of Power in Food Systems

    rss.com/podcasts/digesting-foo

There’s a lot of power in food and food systems: care and nurturing, regeneration and resilience. The power to feed, to refuse food, and to transform landscapes. And then there’s petroleum, data, GMOs, and pesticides; financialization, tractors, and land-grabbing…

This episode explores how corporations and governments operate and control spaces of production and transformation, with articles from Vol. 2, No. 2 of CFS, which our guest, Jennifer Clapp, co–guest edited. (doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v2i2)

Alexia Moyer shares learnings from Brian Brett’s book, Trauma Farm, and PhD student Heidi Janes responds to a selection of CFS articles about corporate power.

  4. In the #OrganicTargets4EU project, Nicolas Lampkin is researching how organic farming can be boosted in the EU ‒ and collaborates with farmers and policy experts from ten EU countries and Switzerland. The project is funded by the EU's Horizon programme.

📃 An article in the EU Research and Innovation Magazine ‘Horizon’ provides insights into the project’s research and initial assessments of the scientists:

  5. Current #foodsystems rely on complex #valuechains in which people & animals are often exploited. Policy protections for those affected by value-chain activities are riddled with loopholes. Truly #sustainable diets require reshaping socio-economic systems: doi.org/10.1038/s43016-024-010

  6. How do climate change, public health, and animal welfare interact in food system shifts?

More than pleased to have worked with talented colleagues on just-published paper discussing how various shifts can affect One Health and (from my standpoint) specifically animal welfare.

  7. #Introduction :)

I have broad intersecting interests related to #health, #equity, #resilience, and #sustainability (HERS), esp as emergent properties of communities & #foodsystems

I've worked across F2P #ValueChains, directly & in support. The latter includes support for #Cornell U's public #LandGrant mission at Mann Library

I'm interested in how #SocioTechnicalSystems approaches, co-evolving social & technical capacities, can support #selfdetermined agrifood systems and a #SolidarityEconomy
