  1. Have you ever tasted a #pluot #fruit before?

    Pluots /ˈpluːɒt/ are later generations of complex hybrid between the Japanese plum, Prunus salicina (providing the greater amount of parentage), and the apricot, Prunus armeniaca.[6][7] The fruit's exterior has smooth skin closely resembling that of a plum. Pluots were developed in the late 20th century by Floyd Zaiger.[8]

    This workshop will cover an introduction to the basics of dormant season pruning for a range of fruit trees and vines, with a particular focus on apples. It will also include demonstrations of pruning techniques on one of the many trees at Welland.

    Learn the basic skill and knowledge you need to start grafting and graft your own heritage apple tree to take home!

    This #workshop will describe the reasons for grafting, when to graft, and when to collect budwood. The workshop will be hands on and participants will be introduced to tree terminology, grafting tools and materials, and will be shown various grafting techniques. Participants will get the chance to practice their new skills on spare branches and once confident, do an actual graft. Each participant will be able to choose an apple variety from the heratige collection at Welland Orchard to graft on to a dwarfing rootstock, to create a new apple tree to take home.

    All tools and materials will be provided.

    Be sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors.
