  1. I try to avoid LinkedIn unless I have to go there. But an AgTech investment post celebrating the "Monsanto playbook" as a model to replicate got under my nose badly enough that I had to write about it.

Nobody who knows my work would call me anti-tech. But there's a hard line between technology that increases farmer capability and technology that engineers farmer dependency. The Monsanto playbook is the second kind.

The playbook: own the genetics, bundle the chemicals, capture the data, engineer the debt. Charge the farmer for all of it. Call it innovation.

Also in there: corporate capture of agricultural knowledge, India's farmer suicide crisis, Dark Emu and native grass seeds, and why a loaf of bread can be a political act.

Tech4Good means the farmer gets more capable. Not more dependent.

  2. #LifecyclesProjectSociety #FruitTreeProject Update.

This year, we have harvested over 63,000 lbs of fruit! Of that, almost 32,000 lbs of Grade A fruit has been donated to the community, to over 70 community service agencies throughout the Greater Victoria Area. Our tree stewards have kept 4,500 lbs, and our amazing team of 191 Harvest Leads and Pickers have taken 13,000 lbs home.

What about the other 13,500 lbs you ask?

Made up of B-Grade, we have processed just over 7500 lbs into juice and jam. Some of the fruit is always C-Grade (compost). To date, we have composted just under 6000 lbs of fruit - while some of this has gone to our friends at Community Composting, the vast majority has gone to a local pig farmer.

We are proud to say no fruit has gone into the landfill!

  3. Great harvest pick of #GrannySmith #apples today. Granny Smith apples are currently one of the most expensive apples in local stores with average pricing of $2.99/lb. The apples we gleaned from one tree, were almost all perfect apples - very few with damage on them 🍏😃
These will be greatly appreciated by many food insecure folks around our community 👍💗

  4. #RoyalRoadsUniversity recently unveiled its new #Indigenous #MedicineGarden – a project designed to give #students and #community members a chance to learn about #plants that the #Lekwungen speaking peoples have used since time immemorial.

Solara Goldwynn, Royal Roads' farm and #FoodSystems lead, and Kenneth Elliot, #EthnoBotanist and #CowichanElder, chose the garden’s colourful mix of plants, most of which grow naturally in the traditional territories of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples (southern #VancouverIsland and the #SanJuanIslands and #GulfIslands
