So if pedal metal is soft enough to get worn down with me trying and being unable to take the pedal off, is it gonna be soft enough to hacksaw away and drill out?

one of the problems with this bike is it’s too small for me to test ride. i wouldn’t’ve accepted it if I’d realised that.

well it sure isn’t perfect but it’s not terrible and i definitely made mistakes so there’s lots more room for improvement

okay so
5 to 4 and 4 to 3 both need some extra twist on the grip shifter but 3 to 2 to 1 are perfect as is the other direction. if i adjust the cable that 5 to 4 and 4 to 3 are also perfect. 1 down to 2 leaves the chain bouncing off the derailleur, making a tictictic sound that comes back shifting into 2 every time, even if i move the derailleur while the wheel is spinning to make it stop. it reappears when I let go.
the wear pattern on the grip implies but does not convince me that previous owner was doing a similar twist herself.
ETA: WAIT
it’s NOT on the derailleur, it’s on the largest gear!

meanwhile, the front adjusted okay but i’m not thrilled with the back. it very much wants to adjust well in one shifting direction only. if i adjust it so up is perfect, down goes out and vice-versa

ANYWAY
this area of rubbed off paint and rust (now cleaned) is the point of this nonsense
I’m gonna put on a white undercoat then use the same overcoat as on the bell. will it work? Yes! well? uhhhhhhhhhhhh we’ll find out lol
but it’ll be better than rust regardless

i can sure say that the “stops rust” part is working tho’, there’s no rust in that can at all

okay so this is how the front detailleur cable was attached when I got this bike but I don’t like it for probably obvious reasons. but at the same time, if I run the cable the way that seems WAY more likely to be correct, it rubs against the main parallelogram spring and I dislike that even more.
am I missing something here?

@raineer Oh, this isn't my bike.
Well okay it is my bike _now_, in that I own it, but it's another abandoned/donor bike that I'm fixing up to give away again.
And as much as I like the purple - and I do quite like the purple, it's very pretty! - it's too small for me to even consider keeping for myself. ^_^

It's interesting that it's now making the same little noises that the back one does.
I don't know what that means. It works much better but it _is_ a new noise.

From 10 seconds of spin to 41, it's an improvement
Not nearly as good as the back wheel, but the back wheel wasn't shedding metal flakes

well, it feels better, but so would pea gravel with that much grease in it xD

ugh, this front wheel's bearings feel like pea gravel

I don't know what the noise is but I _think_ the freewheel lags a little in this configuration? When I put friction on the rim and move the wheel via the gears it doesn't make it.
Or is something too lose? I don't know.
Regardless, before (on the right) and after (on the left), same initial force.

A year ago I installed a Chinese bottom bracket from Aliexpress for less than $5: it survived a winter and significantly more than 30,000 km until it began to make funny noises yesterday.
I've now installed the next one. Different brand, about the same price. Let's see how long it lasts.
