Great morning #bike ride today. Saw more cyclists today than in quite a while. The air quality is going to be terrible later on, all the monster SUVs full of Parisian tourists will turn the sky Paris brown. It will also be warm and humid, though at least not hot and humid.
Come to #stmalo and see the smog of Paris...
TBF once the tourists have left the air quality is better, though not as good as it should be.

Wrote this on the train but then my phone died. but then i remembered I did have a portable battery.
ok, on the Downeaster now so I’m going to write about this ride.
First of all, how naive I was to underestimate how much more it took to haul this heavy ass gravel bike and the bags 122 miles in headwind! Got a proper anaerobic training for my legs. Maybe I should start going to gym and doing deadlift again. I don’t think my legs had been this sore on a bike ride before! Every little hill became surprisingly more challenging.
Second of all, big thanks to my friends Elsa and Fujian to pull me all the way! I'm sandwiched between them most of time so I was relatively shielded from the relentless headwind.
Now, I think 80 miles is probably the most I’d do for one day riding this bike with bags. My plan was to ride to Portland from Boston on day 1 for my bikepacking trip to Bar Harbor. Now I may need to split it into two days.
Anyway, definitely a perfect day to ride! Can’t ask for a better day. It even felt like Spring from time to time. There’s more direct and shorter route to Portland, but we took the scenic one and stopped by iconic lighthouses.
And of course it is not a ride into Maine without lobster rolls! We stopped at Bite into Maine at the Portland Headlight.
Overall it’s an interesting experiment. This is the longest ride with the gravel bike. It felt good to take this old trusty Treck out for a ride after keeping it on the trainer forever. I did bike fitting on this bike a few years back but it definitely no longer fits me any more. The ride position is a bit too upright. Maybe need another fitting before doing the big trip.

Well, the rains have eased up a bit. I did an easy breakfast ride with Grey ⚫️🚲 yesterday. Today, I get to ride to church again. 😃👍
Not much workout happens with ⚫️🚲. It's single-speed. I mostly rely on pedal assist when I use it.
Still... any movement 🚴♀️🚶♀️🏃♀️➡️🧑🩰💃 is good. And yesterday included some filtered air 🌳🌴🌲🌳 and filtered sun ⛅️.
I'm too lazy to go to the gym.
Thank God for my #bike. 😅

I had a flat tire. These two guys led me to a local roadside mechanic who was asleep and taking the day off. They rousted him for me and he patched my flat.

@ai6yr I was a child living in Irvine when they built the 405. Before the road opened, my family used to take our bikes out on the weekend and ride ON THE 405. We would ride south from Culver to the next exit and picnic under the overpass.

"The #Detroit #RidefortheLiving is one of many around the globe that are adjuncts to the original Ride for the Living, held every year in #Poland. The original Ride begins at the nefarious #Nazi #concentrationcamp at #Auschwitz- #Birkenau, Poland, and ends at the #Jewish Community Center in #Kraków, Poland.
This international Ride for the Living takes place over four days in Poland in June. It features a 60-mile #bike ride as well as other activities related to the #Holocaust and Jewish community #history. It ends with a #Shabbat dinner. Most important, the Ride commemorates those who were lost in the Holocaust and the resilience of the Jewish people. It’s an impressive event. Just ask Cheryl and Arnie Berlin who took the Ride in Poland (June 7, 2018).
The JCC in Kraków is a prime exemplar for survival and resilience. Before World War II, Poland had the largest Jewish population in #Europe at 3 million."

I like to ride hard and fast, and climb mountains. This bike doesn’t have a power meter and the geometry is so friendly that I am in a pretty upright position (thus less aero) but it’s kinda nice not staring at my power number and trying to squeeze more juice out of my legs…

Took my old trusty Trek checkpoint SL5 out for a test spin today. Front brake isn’t biting hard enough and squeaks very loudly. I’ll stop by Zach’s on the way out tomorrow. This weekend will be the dry run (dry ride?) for my bike tour setup to Bar Harbor in September.
Tomorrow it’ll be ~45 miles to Haverhill MA. Then I meet with my friends on Saturday morning and we ride together along the coast (probably fueled by lobster rolls) to Portland Maine, about 122 miles.
