For those interested in an in-person #pdx #emacs event, a few of us nerds are meeting Tuesday, 15 September 2026 at 6:00pm at the Lucky Lab brewpub on Hawthorne Street for a PDX Emacs Social Hour.
While this event will primarily be social, I figured if we enjoy these gatherings enough, we'll might find a place with a projector and nerdout like we did in the previous decade.

There's a free public telephone system based here in Portland called Futel because of course there is.
It's part art installation, part political statement, part public service.
Just one of the many things I love about Portland.

Earlier this year I posted an essay (https://aten.cool/leaving_university_2026.html) in which I discuss leaving the university to try homesteading. I'm sad to report that rather than finding peace and safety, my partner and I are now in a scary, unstable situation. We are trying to move to the #Portland, #Oregon area within the next month, where we will have to try to square the circle of paying rent and buying groceries without contributing to the system that is attacking us.
If you are interested in helping us, we mainly need to find housing. We have enough money to move ourselves and pay rent for a bit, but we don't have jobs yet so it's hard to get a place. I previously boosted my partner's posting about a job search (https://mastodon.social/@SUp3rN0va/117090477277528682). I am #transgender and my spouse is #nonbinary. We know the #PNW is expensive, but it's also somewhere we're likely to be more welcome. Also, we got married in #Salem.

Can’t believe it’s been almost two years.
This will be my first time talking about this publicly in detail. Not sure how deep we’ll get into it but we shall see! I’m hoping this can help inspire a way to finally figure out how and where to tell my story.
This will be a casual conversation with a facilitator and everyone is welcome to participate and ask questions. There’s a lot to learn from this experience.
