There's not enough housing for America's poorest while low-income units sit empty
By Claire Rush
September 7, 2026"Mathew Davis, who lives in a #HomelessShelter in Austin, Texas, would love an apartment of his own. But with the little money he makes donating blood plasma, even a $450-a-month tiny home with no running water and a communal bathroom would be a stretch.
"Meanwhile, over 4,500 units the city classifies as affordable — nearly 16% — sit empty.
" 'I don’t make enough money really to afford anything,' Davis, 49, said of the few hundred dollars he earns a month. 'I just keep trying to swim uphill.'
"The poorest people in the U.S. face the most acute shortages of affordable homes. But the majority of low-income housing financed in recent years is for those earning 50% of an area’s median income or above, according to a survey of state housing agencies.
"Some cities are now seeing an uptick in vacancies as rents for these units approach market rates. The result: Apartments designated as affordable sit empty because the poorest of the poor cannot afford them.
"Meanwhile, some people are forced into #homelessness and others into desperate circumstances to pay for housing they can’t afford."

Lego Skylines devs want your citys problems to be visible without digging into a stats screen, which means finding a "family friendly" version of showing #homelessness
As pretty as Cities: Skylines is, getting a read on your citys problems can take some digging. While traffic jams are immediately visible, prompting you to start reorganising the layout of your streets and bypasses, other issues only make themselves known when you switch on overlays or bring up a stats screen. Changing that is one developer Iceflake Studios aims for colourful plastic brick-based spinoff Lego Skylines. "If theres an issue, it should be visible in the world," game director Lasse Liljedahl tells me. "Everything that you need to worry about or manage is something you should see while zooming in and zooming out and not digging deep in statistics or information screens. Thats the goal." Read more

I don't know. I can't call that important in the way I was thinking about it so I don't think that's it. And since #meditation has not revealed yet the origin of this need, it's really bothering me because I have put so much effort in for over 4 years to talk ending #homelessness. I didn't die.

#Money, the interesting thing about it is if you #exist in #poverty, you desperately need it for your day to day survival, then if your on the opposite end as in being a multi million or billionaire in reality money means nothing, because everything you own and do is leveraged off of debt that you one don't actually own and second can never actually satisfy, and the rules of the game are very different for those in poverty, and the rules are slightly different if your in the middle, but if your on top, the rules don't apply to you unless somehow your generation and hoarding of wealth imposes upon another top income holder, basically if your in poverty all the way to the bottom end of double digit millions, your beholden to the entire state if it where, and beyond that the entire state apparently is beholden to you and your ability to leverage debt, it is a rigged system of epic inequality and strongly embraces prejudice against the rest of us whom simply would appreciate the basics in life to be readily available without so much turmoil, and stress to our mental and physical wellbeing, money is an illusion of power and has left far to many of us going hungry, literally;

Laws are often designed to enforce a certain way of life. For example, people can physically live in boats, RVs/caravans, tents, under trees, etc. But, in the US, one usually can't get a government ID, a bank account, a job, insurance, etc without a residential address.

Seasonal Compassion Is a Failed Operating Model
By Cliff Potts, CSO & Editor-in-Chief, WPS News
A Predictable Pattern
Every year, institutions across the developed world engage in a predictable, short-lived surge of concern for poverty, homelessness, and economic precarity. The timing is not accidental. It coincides almost entirely with the Christmas season.
During this period, corporations, governments, faith institutions, and media organizations briefly acknowledge the existence of the poor. Resources are allocated, messaging shifts toward empathy and generosity, and suffering is framed as tragic but temporary—implicitly solvable through limited charitable action.
Then the calendar advances. Budgets reset. First-quarter priorities reassert themselves. The systems that produced widespread insecurity resume without modification, now buffered by the reputational credit earned during the holidays.
This is not an aberration. It is the operating model.
Compassion as Reputation Management
Seasonal compassion functions as a reputational offset, not a corrective mechanism. It allows institutions to appear responsive without addressing root causes. In business terms, poverty is treated as a public-relations risk rather than a systemic market failure.
Concern is carefully bounded in time and scope. It is intense enough to be visible, brief enough to be harmless, and structured to avoid disruption to existing incentives and power arrangements.
The Market Cost of Impoverishment
What is rarely acknowledged is that large-scale impoverishment actively shrinks markets.
When individuals and communities fall into relative or abject poverty, they are removed from meaningful participation in market dynamics. They cannot consume, invest, innovate, or contribute at scale. Their exclusion represents not fiscal discipline, but lost demand, lost productivity, and foregone growth.
From a purely economic standpoint, allowing populations to become this disadvantaged is not efficiency—it is value destruction.
Businesses that tolerate or benefit from systems that impoverish large segments of society undermine their own long-term profitability. Markets cannot expand when purchasing power collapses. Innovation stagnates when survival replaces opportunity. Stability erodes when precarity becomes normalized.
Christianity as Symbol, Not Substance
Christianity, when invoked during this season, is typically reduced to symbolism rather than substance. The figure of Jesus is used to justify generosity while his actual teachings—on debt, power, exclusion, and material need—are operationally ignored.
His emphasis was never on sentiment, but on outcomes. He addressed hunger when it existed. He disrupted systems that normalized deprivation. He did not propose seasonal remedies for permanent conditions.
What we practice instead is managed compassion: bounded, time-limited concern designed to preserve comfort, profit, and institutional continuity while producing minimal structural change.
Exporting a Broken Model
This failure is not confined to any one nation. It is exported.
So-called “developing” economies are encouraged to adopt the same economic frameworks—precarity-based labor, extractive growth models, normalized inequality—that have already demonstrated their inability to produce durable human security. The result is not development, but replication: the same failures, scaled globally.
From a governance and business perspective, this approach is indefensible.
The Year-Round Test
Poverty is not an anomaly within an otherwise healthy system. It is a predictable outcome of policy choices, incentive structures, and economic priorities. Treating it as a seasonal concern guarantees its persistence while steadily eroding the very markets businesses depend on.
If Christianity—or any ethical framework—is to have relevance beyond decoration, it must inform year-round decision-making: fiscal policy, labor standards, housing strategy, healthcare access, and development models. Not symbolically. Operationally.
And if we refuse to fix the causes of relative and abject poverty the rest of the year, nothing we do during the Christmas season will ever matter.

CW: Long Post // Depression/Oppression Induced Art Block // homelessness, dehumanization, abuse
There's something that just kinda clicked to me just now about the nature of art. Whether we admit to it or not, art is an act of expressing yourself. It can be as detailed as a painting or as simple as a one word poem. As soulful as a eulogy or as casual as an insult. We can define our own meaning to what art is at any moment, but this is the way I see it. And as someone who has been repeatedly told and oftentimes shown that my voice, my feelings, my comfort doesnt matter, is it any wonder why I feel this lack of meaning with my art?
Should it be any mystery how I took the connection being discarded by the one person I trusted the most in this whole world in an instant and came up with the idea that I no longer had value. 15 Years with someone you met just on the brink of puberty, who had saved your life in more ways than one. We were almost at a point where our friendship was hitting the halfway point of my entire life. Her loss leading directly into being homeless in 2024, one the streets in the middle of January, well I wont belabour the point. The way I was treated changed me as a person and a system. It's like I died and finally getting housing that Summer after months of torment was simply reanimating my corpse.
I often feel a lot of shame that that happened to me. I had considered my first homelessness to be a "noble sacrifice". It was a voluntary choice I made when I was 19 so I could gain independence from my severly abusive mother. But not only was I protected by getting into the emergency shelter immediately and being a youth, this time I had no way of making money and was fighting for disability, and my partner at the time knew that. So then came all the shame and gravity that came with being on the street and treated literally less than human. I still kept drawing, and I still do it, but have often lately felt a struggle to connect with it, unless it was vent art, which I was always reluctant to do because not marinating in the feelings felt a lot more appealing.
And then it hit me. I continue to feel the shame and dehumanization lessons I had to suffer, not only throughtout my whole life anyway, but the added intensity that being street homeless gave. If nobody gave a crap about what I had to say when my life was on the line, why on earth would they care about anything else from me. And this is not to discount my friends and community who have loved and kept me afloat. But the conflicting messages of only getting positive feedback through the computer and being completely disregarded in person, I often feel like believing my friends is only deluding myself. This is often the first sign of me going into a depression induced psychosis episode.
It's no wonder I seek so desperately for validation and approval online, because when every other avenue demeans you into nothing, you either latch onto what keeps you going or succumb to despair. It's hard to have hope because I keep getting all the wrong lessons because of whats going on in the world that keeps directly keeping me down. and then I go through all this to see all the most violent fighting going on about the stupidest bullshit, i.e. puritanical censorship of fiction. Why does being allowed to express myself mean so much to me? It's literally whats keeping me alive. The promise and hope of being able to make more art. The longing for me to pursue the projects I spent my life over. To take everything that helped me escape the brutal reality, and maybe help someone else escape theirs too.
this message was brought to you by medical marijuana and playing YunYun! Rhythmn Psychosis. Rim de Lacent!
P.S. "Escaping reality is a crutch" not only is an ableist statement, but it's an easy thing to say when your reality isn't a bullet hell and your hitbox is half the screen.
What keeps me alive should keep me alive. I'm not hurting anyone and I put warnings on things, nobody is walking into something they dont want to see if I can help it. But thats beside the point. The seemingly simple things that I hold close to my heart because they help me find value in myself. Any I need to cling to everything I can to keep going. Even if sometimes its because making my friends happy make me happy. And that should be okay too. When my own identity has been demeaned so much that I dont even know what I want from myself, I need to allow myself grace and let myself take little steps.
So much of my thinking gets blocked by all these arbitrary rules my mother placed on me. In fact, a lot of the self soothing techniques I would do would just be bowled over by her and essentially brainwashing me out of healthy coping mechanisms. Like bruh. But yeah, my reality blows, and its hard to keep going, but I need to start questioning my self meanness a lot more. It's hard when its so thickly reinforced but augh. I just hate having to argue with headmates over it </3

While researching #LemuelShattuck hospital, I came across some stories about how some #TinyHouses set-up in the hospital's parking lot were HELPING with #Homelessness, but were dismantled because the funding ran out... WTF!
Shattuck’s cottage community, a relief to the #unsheltered at Mass. and Cass, to close this summer
By Jason Laughlin Globe Staff,Updated May 8, 2024
"Funding has run out for two Massachusetts housing programs that provide shelter to those who previously lived at the #TentEncampment near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard [#MassAndCass]. While the state plans to close one, officials are discussing ways to keep the second program open.
"A temporary cottage community on the grounds of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in #JamaicaPlain will shutter at the end of July, a spokesperson from the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services said. The community is no longer accepting new residents, and the nearly two dozen people housed on the grounds now will be offered alternative housing.
" 'We are committed to ensuring there is no break in services and no break in housing for those who choose to continue forward,' said Deirdre Calvert, director of the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.
"The cottages’ closure was first reported by WBUR.
"The cottages, which included a bed and small living area for individuals or couples, opened in 2022 amid the opioid crisis that led to a homeless encampment near the intersection known as Mass. and Cass. Since then, the community has sheltered more than 100 people, state officials said. The cottages, administered by Commonwealth Care Alliance, offered support for people in addiction while helping them transition to more permanent housing."
[...]
"The aluminum cottages each have lockable sleeping cabins, storage for residents’ belongings, heating, and air conditioning. People who had been sleeping on the streets told the Globe in 2022 interviews that the little residences offered a welcome oasis of stability."

Hundreds of #Australians experiencing #homelessness are dying more than 30 years prematurely in a nationwide #crisis fuelled by despair, critical #housing shortages, a breakdown in health provision, violence on the streets and failures of the justice system.
A 12-month Guardian Australia investigation identifying and examining more than 600 cases has found people experiencing homelessness are dying at an average age of 44, a shocking life expectancy gap that experts say is worse than any other disadvantaged group in the country. #housingshortage #ponzischeme #BetterNotBigger #auspol #thirdworldcountry
