Lego Skylines devs want your citys problems to be visible without digging into a stats screen, which means finding a "family friendly" version of showing #homelessness

As pretty as Cities: Skylines is, getting a read on your citys problems can take some digging. While traffic jams are immediately visible, prompting you to start reorganising the layout of your streets and bypasses, other issues only make themselves known when you switch on overlays or bring up a stats screen. Changing that is one developer Iceflake Studios aims for colourful plastic brick-based spinoff Lego Skylines. "If theres an issue, it should be visible in the world," game director Lasse Liljedahl tells me. "Everything that you need to worry about or manage is something you should see while zooming in and zooming out and not digging deep in statistics or information screens. Thats the goal." Read more

How can we ask for currency when we have already asked so much so many times?

Why don't we "just get a job"?

We believe firmly and resolutely that the work we are doing to survive will beget the ability to thrive. And in turn, the work we do to thrive will beget the ability to function. And when we have a functioning home, we can build a functioning lab. And with a functioning lab, we can build a functioning gene editing system.

Being forced to move out into an unready school bus two years ago was not just a challenge, it was a hammer blow that could have spelled the end of our efforts. It could have been easy for us to throw in the towel and return to whence we came. But we aren't like that. And freedom of any kind is not what you should just give up on, let alone freedom of form.

Although we have tried on a few occasions to find employment to supplement income and raise funds for more than just the bare minimum, we have repeatedly found that the job market is an uncaring disastrous mess that takes away more than unemployment does, because when you account for commutes, taxes and payroll fuckery, not to mention bureaucracy and sheer low wages, and the instability of gig roles, and of course AI, it becomes far more favourable to use our precious time on improving our situation directly than gamble it on that shitfest.

Do we feel any guilt asking for help with money? Only insomuch as those who are sending it might be putting yourselves into financial problems by doing so (please only send what you can afford to send). Because we know we are using it for the most honest purposes we can, unlike so many other possible places that money could have gone. And one day our work may help you.

And one day maybe we will see the end of capitalism and not need arbitrary tokens of exchange for basic goods and services.

Chinese people, for instance, are opting out of society with many choosing to flee, something evident with the unprecedented surge of Chinese nationals across America’s southern border during the Biden administration. Many of them were poor, but some were middle-class Chinese, evidently desperate to live in a free society.

"Most Chinese, however, cannot leave. Street dwellers often have low social credit scores. A person’s score reflects all interactions with society, and those with low ones are not allowed to, among other things, maintain bank accounts, buy train tickets or obtain coveted jobs. As a result, they have no home."

#Money, the interesting thing about it is if you #exist in #poverty, you desperately need it for your day to day survival, then if your on the opposite end as in being a multi million or billionaire in reality money means nothing, because everything you own and do is leveraged off of debt that you one don't actually own and second can never actually satisfy, and the rules of the game are very different for those in poverty, and the rules are slightly different if your in the middle, but if your on top, the rules don't apply to you unless somehow your generation and hoarding of wealth imposes upon another top income holder, basically if your in poverty all the way to the bottom end of double digit millions, your beholden to the entire state if it where, and beyond that the entire state apparently is beholden to you and your ability to leverage debt, it is a rigged system of epic inequality and strongly embraces prejudice against the rest of us whom simply would appreciate the basics in life to be readily available without so much turmoil, and stress to our mental and physical wellbeing, money is an illusion of power and has left far to many of us going hungry, literally;

"A new heat wave alert for Massachusetts landed Monday, with officials warning of 'dangerously hot conditions' and a #HeatIndex up to 111 degrees.

"An 'extreme heat watch' is in effect for nearly the entire state from Wednesday morning through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service. This will vastly increase chances both for heat-related illnesses as well as troublesome weather like thunderstorms, forecasters warn.

"Temperatures could reach up to 99 degrees in Boston on Wednesday during the day, with Worcester’s high at 97 and Springfield at a whopping 100. At night, they will drop just to the mid-70s, then creep back up to a high of 102 degrees on Thursday in Boston and Worcester and 104 in Springfield.

"Friday is expected to again hit 102 degrees in Boston, with nighttime temperatures at 79. On Saturday — the 4th of July holiday — temperatures will be 97 degrees in Boston and Springfield and 95 in Worcester. Forecasters warn there could be chances for thunderstorms across the state in the evening.

Being prepared

"Though temperatures climbed above 90 degrees in Massachusetts on multiple days in May and June, the impending heat wave will be the most hot and humid weather the state has had had since last year.

"The first heat wave of the season is often the worst for people’s health, according to data collected by state officials on heat-related illnesses and hospital visits, as residents’ bodies adjust to the temperature change.

"Additionally, emergency room visits and heat-related illnesses rise when temperatures hit 85 degrees or higher for at least three consecutive days — the threshold the state uses for unhealthy heat alerts.

"Boston officials urge residents to stay hydrated, use air conditioning, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and check on neighbors. Children and pets cannot be left in vehicles at any time.

"City residents can call 311 or visit the city’s heat website to find one of the 16 cooling centers at the Boston Centers for Youth & Families — locations turned into cooling centers for heat emergencies — public pools and libraries for relief.

A first test for Boston

"A spokesperson for Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office said on Monday that the city was still 'working through a determination' on its other cooling center locations and hours for the upcoming heatwave.

"The heat wave will also be the first major test of Boston’s new worker heat-protection ordinance, which took effect this year and is believed to be among the first local laws of its kind in the country.

"Under the law, city departments and qualifying contractors performing city work are required to maintain heat illness prevention plans designed to reduce heat-related injuries and deaths — especially those caused by fatigue, dizziness and dehydration.

"Under the ordinance, employers must provide protections including water, shade and rest breaks beginning at 80 degrees, with additional 'high heat' measures required once temperatures reach 90 degrees. Covered employers must also establish emergency response procedures, train workers on heat illness risks and designate a heat safety coordinator.

"The ordinance was passed by the Boston City Council and signed by Mayor #MichelleWu last year as experts projected more frequent and intense heat waves in coming decades. Boston officials previously estimated the number of days above 90 degrees, annually, could increase from a historic average of about 10 to as many as 46 by the 2070s.

Who is most at-risk?

"Those over the age of 65, children and infants are more at risk for severe illness, with children facing unique dangers during the prolonged heat events. Due to children’s smaller body size and reduced ability to sweat, they will heat up more quickly than adults and rely on adults to ensure their safety.

"Consistent periods of time where daytime temperatures exceed 90 degrees and nighttime temperatures remain above 78 degrees are considered 'extreme heat' for young children, the impacts of which can be long-lasting.

"People with chronic medical conditions, #disabilities, limited mobility, who are pregnant, experiencing homelessness, outdoor workers and residents without access to air conditioning are also at high risk. People in Black, brown and other communities of color may also face disproportionate impacts because of longstanding inequities in the environment and infrastructure, according to the state.

"Outdoor workers are among the groups considered especially vulnerable during extreme heat events. State health data showed 707 emergency room visits and 87 hospitalizations related to heat stress in Massachusetts in 2022, the most recent year available."

"Funding has run out for two Massachusetts housing programs that provide shelter to those who previously lived at the #TentEncampment near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard [#MassAndCass]. While the state plans to close one, officials are discussing ways to keep the second program open.

"A temporary cottage community on the grounds of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in #JamaicaPlain will shutter at the end of July, a spokesperson from the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services said. The community is no longer accepting new residents, and the nearly two dozen people housed on the grounds now will be offered alternative housing.

" 'We are committed to ensuring there is no break in services and no break in housing for those who choose to continue forward,' said Deirdre Calvert, director of the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.

"The cottages’ closure was first reported by WBUR.

"The cottages, which included a bed and small living area for individuals or couples, opened in 2022 amid the opioid crisis that led to a homeless encampment near the intersection known as Mass. and Cass. Since then, the community has sheltered more than 100 people, state officials said. The cottages, administered by Commonwealth Care Alliance, offered support for people in addiction while helping them transition to more permanent housing."

So I mentioned that I got fired.

Hurt my knee from standing up at work all the time on a knee that wasn't great to begin with. Was sitting on the stool behind the counter a bunch when not dealing with customers, assistant manager even sliding it over and no one mentioning it the entire time I've worked there.

Couple weeks ago I fuck my knee badly and need to go to the hospital. Next day manager, Amanda, is like "whatever the issue is, let me know. If you need time off then I can arrange that. However we can help." I initially said no to time off but then changed my mind and asked for a week off. She immediately got angry and frustrated. After a bit she makes a phone call standing right next to me and doing nothing which is rare. 99% of the time she goes into the back room to take calls. This time she's stood there with her boss and asking if there's any way to get help to cover my shifts or if she has to do her shift and my shift. Was trying to guilt me for what I asked.

I get back and first day I'm sat down on the stool like normal. She says that there are forms to fill out that will allow me to sit while serving people instead of sitting down when not serving people. Cool. Next day it changes to needing the forms filled to sit on the stool at all and sitting on the stool by anyone is against policy. I'm okay with it at first, like frustrated but being polite but then I say "this is affects everyone and not just me right?" and she immediately gets defensive. Says no one else does it and I say they do. Again, assistant manager openly gives the stool to me because of my knee. Fine. I'll pay the fee to fill the form out during next weeks appointment.

Go to work the next day, assistant manager gives me stool because manager isn't there that day. At the end of the day I get a call saying she checked the cameras earlier in the day, saw me on the stool, and I broke policy so I'm fired.

Wasn't the best job in the world, was wearing me down in a lot of ways, but still was income and employment. Being fucked this close to end of month isn't exactly fun. So there's the explanation of what went wrong. Been depression napping when not actively looking for work. Going to sell a couple things to put towards and bills/rent/transportation/stuff for how knows how long. One of those things is my Playstation account which comes with a ton of games. It is $3500 but has minimum of $4500 worth of games on its own with far more via PS Plus over the years. If you're interested, take a look. If not give it a share to someone who might be. I know its pricy but I'm open to a negotiation.

David knows first-hand the impacts of mass incarceration, after receiving a life sentence at the age 16. In his words, “being thrown away at 16 years old wasn’t the event. It was an exclamation point” on the consistent messaging he’s been receiving his whole life from systems that failed to see his humanity. He was released after serving 24 years, following legislative reform of juvenile sentencing standards due to a new understanding of youth brain science.

The Deputy Prime Minister has said that the Government ran out of time to ban “no fault” evictions before the general election.

The Conservatives had promised in their 2019 election manifesto to abolish Section 21 notices, which are used by landlords to evict tenants without any reason needing to be given.

The Renters Reform Bill, intended to deliver the ban, was first introduced in the House of Commons in May last year. But its progress was delayed by opposition from several Tory MPs who feared it would cause landlords to sell up and who wanted to strengthen protections for landlords.

As recently as February, housing secretary Michael Gove had promised that a ban would be delivered by the next general election.

But it emerged, following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement of an election on July 4, that the necessary legislation would not be passed during the “wash up” period before Parliament is dissolved.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service on Friday, Deputy PM Oliver Dowden said: “Well, as happens at the end of the Parliament, when you announce a general election, there are large amounts of legislation on the books. We’ve only got two days to conclude it all.”

Asked about the fact that the Government first promised to deliver a ban almost five years ago, he said: “It just hasn’t been possible to get this legislation through in the ‘wash up’ period.”

New Government data released last week, showed that 2,682 households in England were marched out of their homes by bailiffs as a result of Section 21 evictions between January and March — up 19 percent in a year, and the highest number in six years.

Section 21 evictions are a significant contribution to homelessness and rough sleeping.

The campaign group Generation Rent said The Bill had been delayed on numerous occasions by a minority of pro-landlord MPs.

Ben Twomey, chief executive of Generation Rent, said: “Abandoning the Renters Reform Bill as parliament dissolves means the government has failed in its promise to renters at the last election to deliver a fairer tenancy system.

“If it had not been for delays caused by a minority of MPs opposing the Bill, the government could enter the election campaign with a new law to end Section 21 evictions and bring in stronger protections for renters.

“It now falls to the next parliament to start afresh and get it right at the second time of asking.

“Whoever forms the next government must make rental reform a key part of their agenda. This means proper protections from evictions when we have done nothing wrong, and limits on unaffordable rent rises so we can’t be turfed on to the streets at a landlords’ whim,” said Twomey.

On the topic of housing in general, Dowden said: “We’ve built 2.5mn houses [since 2010].

“You contrast that with here in London, Sadiq Khan and the Labour party have the poorest house-building record pretty much anywhere in the country.

“So I think Labour-controlled London is an indication of my deep scepticism that Labour will deliver on building housing.”

However, Mayor Khan celebrated in May last year when he exceeded the Government’s target of 116,000 affordable homes being started in the capital between 2016 and 2023.

Outside of London, the target was not hit by the Government’s housing agency, Homes England — as only 126,800 affordable starts were recorded by the end of March 2023. The England-wide target, excluding London, was 134,000.

Homes England blamed former PM Liz Truss’s “mini-budget”, claiming it had “evaporated” its contingencies.

In more recent months however, London has seen the lowest number of homes started of any English region, amidst a nationwide downturn in house-building.

In the three months from October to December 2023, a record low of just 580 new homes, of all types, was started in London, according to “provisional” Government data.

A record low was also in the South East region of England (2,720 homes), with relatively low figures in other parts of the country too, but nowhere building less than in London.

Khan said this was partly due to lingering uncertainty at the time over how the Government would be applying incoming fire safety rules, which would require all tall buildings to have second staircases.

With London having more tall buildings than other regions, he argued that the capital had been particularly hard hit by the lack of certainty over the technical requirements of the new rules — for example, whether the two staircases would need to be entirely separate or whether they can be contained within the same building core.

By March this year, Khan said that at least 38,000 homes in the capital were being “stalled” by this lack of certainty, though the relevant guidance has now been published.
